Not surprised. The illusion of anonymity can be pretty dangerous for those that think they have it. In some ways the FBI could have done worse than leave the thing running knowing they had the ace up their sleeve.

Was just gonna edit that in, the people who use the network now have a reality check that their impunity is not as justified as they thought.

It's going to just push them elsewhere and we'll lose them. Anonymity on the internet is an illusion, but there are still plenty of spaces too hide in.

Didn't they actually track the guy through 'conventional' means though? Thought they caught him on a forum with his gmail address and linked it to his google+ account........pretty facking stupid.

Anonymity exists for those smart enough to understand it.

Chris H, anonymous live on the deep web, and they hacked into a "site' and gave the details of the users to the FBI.

The deep web gives you anonymity in the form of you being hard to trace, however with resources available u can be traced. The FBI, believe it or not recruit (unethical but under the table) arrested elite hackers, they do all sorts for them like political espionage to infiltrating "rings" in order to place beacons in networks etc.

A case not long ago where a "producer" of certain material was tracked down after he downloaded a rigged "tor", his computer was seized and he had government grade encryption software...the hackers they used cracked it in 3 days and he is now serving life.

Between honeypots, rigged software, high budget operations and whistleblowers anonymity is a false dawn.

This Silk row guy was caught by conventional means, but the fed used the site for long enough to arrest folk who were buying and selling "peoples human rights" if u know what I mean. Arrests get made, but they are low key and highly tactical.

That being said, the deep web is a very interesting place if u know how to navigate through and avoid certain things. I'm a conspiracy person so I'm convinced that at the bottom of the trench, through the muck, hackers, terrorists and unethical human trials companies, is an archon interface.

Are you serious? I've heard of this "conspiracy theory" but I didn't think anyone took it seriously..........

"Between honeypots, rigged software, high budget operations and whistleblowers anonymity is a false dawn. "

I agree with this, to an extent. Anonymity is technically possible though, but I take your point about the above.

Obviously on ja606 moderation is difficult when we cant ban people, only accounts. Generally and automatically, 5 mins after article creation from a Tor user we ban the article and autoban the account.

It's a kick up the rear end, but also it won't so Mirror sites popping up. Also to add as the government's technology and skills improve, so will the geeks that run these sites.

Silk Row 2-3-4-5-6...Are probably up and running as already.

admin that's a pretty telling statement, as u have to ask yourself, why would someone want to enter a forum through TOR? Suggests the person using it, is a heavy user of the deep web or at least a competent shadow surfer as I call it. Both suggest then person isn't so "straight laced".

Lefty, I agree as its the nature of the beast. The geeks who exist on the deep web are not all knights of valour. Some are evil people! Its the battle the authorities are fighting.

Chris H, I came across this theory from a silk row user funnily enough, he is a "algorithm person". He said a lot about the basement level of the deep web containing weird code and stuff. He said there is a hackers understanding that the lowest levels contain extremely advanced A.I which is was created from some form of Intelligence of an inexplicable nature, he went into some crazy matrix stuff (bit heavy for me).

I'm not an advanced computer guy so I get jargoned to boredom pretty quick. But the just is powerful stuff tho, and when u look around at the way computers dominate our lives, one can see the potential for control from "strange anonmoly down there".

Mike, I'm fairly techy, been to a few computer security events and the like..... I honestly think the Deep Deep Web anything below level 5 is nonsense and half the stuff that they claim exist in level 5 is nonsense too. Content such as Tesla plans and all that would be on the surface web in a day.

There are real things like Dark Pools in banking which FTSE 100 companies like ICAP are involved in. But this is all pretty well known and not really anything to do with conspiracies and Deep Web.

When folk start going on about self aware AI and Level 8 I think people are getting a tad overzealous with the simulation Hypothesis.

I would suspect much of the gusto if guys from 4chan baiting noobs who are a bit green.

Interesting topic op.

Could someone explain these Levels?
Similar to Dante's 'inferno'?

I cannot disagree with admin to be honest, and the baiting part seems fair. However I'm a digger and will continue to try and find out more on this topic.

If you search Google its a good start, there are forums with folk on both sides of the argument. Admin is the better person to ask about levels, but to my knowledge its supposed to get worse as you go down, with folk hiding stuff of a more shady nature etc.

So admin..simulation hypothesis...now you are talking! The way you worded your sentence says u may have some belief in it?

The closure of The Silk Road is a huge blow for drug users. The site, similar to ebay and amazon, used a reputation system to judge sellers.
To get good feedback and to encourage further sales, sellers had to provide quality, uncut (or close to), and on-weight narcotics. If they tried to mess people around, their reputation as a seller would suffer.

Now it has been seized, people must go back to chancing their arm buying from dealers on the street. The quality of the drugs is, generally, of a much lower quality and weight.

Silk Road effectively provided a sensible, honest and safe means of buying drugs. People are going to take drugs regardless, so the safer the better in my opinion.
Shame.

Admin,

All this deep web stuff is pretty new to me but I would like to read more on it, in particular the conspiracies. Where would you recommend I start?

Also what if an existing account started using TOR as I'm pretty sure I was on here when using it a while back.

Diggler, it is only really article creation from TOR that concerns us the most.

I'm not an expert on the deep web, would probably recommend you avoid it, given the content and the focus on it. You will see forums where folk talk about it. Often on body building forums, where people look for juice.

I have no interest in getting into it just reading about it. What forums?

How's the bodybuilding going? Been a long time from any activity in the weightlifting board.
