I dont know why his performances in Seria A matter, or whether he came from the Angolian League top division - and i think we have to stop judging like this.
Not opening up the AVB debate but it used to really get my goat when people used to say, he did this at Porto, he did that. So what? Its not what happens in other leagues, in other countries, that bother me - its how they can play/perform in the league that we play in.
Reputation in other leagues can only get you your move, they cannot change what we see in front of our eyes. For the people like me who didnt see him in Italian football just see a player who has been outplayed by weak opposition, has a poor first touch, and no pace.
Now i'm not saying dump him, turn on him, or anything like that - but i do think we're mollycoddling him purely because he cost £30m.
Just my opinion mind.
Very poor point chicken - when buying players from foreign leagues you judge their performances in that league, no?

Ridiculous point of view....
What good is a player to us if they can play in Serie A, but not the Premiership.
Its as much use as having a punctured dinghy in the middle of the Atlantic ocean, surrounded by flesh eating sharks.
He may not be able to apply himself at spurs (I think he will given time), but you can't dismiss prior performances because they weren't played in our league
Chicken-you don't seem to understand that some players need time to adapt. Especially youngsters.
Serie A is a similar quality league to the premier league, but a completely different style. Once Lamela adapts to the faster nature as well as settles into his bee environment he will be a star
Bergkamp, Henry etc would have been judged as poor signings after 2 months using your criteria.

I think i over-reacted a bit in my posts (so sorry for that ), but i just cannot accept that because a player (or manager) did X, Y or Z in another league, then they deserve a chance at our club regardless of how they appear in front of our eyes in our team colours, in the leagues and cups we compete for.
I just witness us going easier on expensive players rather than the cheaper ones. Chadli and Lamela being prime examples.
Chicken
Maybe others see it that way, but in his career thus far Lamela has certainly proved himself a better player than Chadli
Sorry chicken but how can Lamela prove himself in the premier league if he's never played there? Your preaching the impossible here mate. We judge a player on where he came from and I tell you this now. From what I have seen of him (6/7 games for Roma) I know for a fact he's an outstanding talent. Yes he is taking very slow to adapt I give you that and has looked way off pace but I'm not suprised considering he's been given only bit part 60 min spells in Europe. He has not started a league game yet so how can you judge him in the premier league? I find it irritating that supporters are so quick to bring down players without even giving them a chance. Infact one league game he did come on against Cardiff and he set up our winner so there is something there and I would much rather him start against hull on the left than a lethargic Sigurdsson in my opinion. Yes siggy has scored some important goals this season and I like siggy but siggy is a terrific squad player and that's it. Unless injuries occur or players are rested then I personally wouldn't have siggy in the 1st 11. I just don't think he's good enough.
Don,
Of course we dont know how he would do in the Premiership, but how can you say he deserves a start from what you have seen in a Spurs shirt? If this same player had a different name and you didnt know his value i can confidently say you would not be pushing for him to start - no way.
Also, you cant use the "adjusting" excuse because Sheriff FC are far weaker than anything he is likely to face in the Premiership, yet he looked way off the standard - and this is not Premiership standard but a very poor European standard.
Siggy has proved he can play in the Premiership, first with Swansea, and also with us. He has arguably been our best player so far this season, with Lamela being the worst of the new buys.
We cannot use his reputation in another league as a reason to play him. If we use this then Chadli should also start every game, so should Eriksen, and we should never have sold Dempsey.
We have to select players because of how they perform in a Spurs shirt, in a Spurs team, in the games that Spurs play.
Selecting a player for how they played for Roma last season is just crazy.
Chadli doesn't have a particular big reputation
Also no way has siggy been our best player

Exactly....
Who has been better than Siggy? Can you name 3 players?
Siggy has been average apart from the Norwich game.
I'd start Lamela on the left v hull for natural width. The only other option would be azza on the right and andros on the left, but I don't want to disrupt Townsend's rhythm on the right.
Dembele, paulinho, Townsend
Everywhere
So not only do you want to play a player who is struggling big time, but you want to change the balance of the team, and play said player out of position.
On the basis of what, that he cost £30m and did well for an Italian team?
I'm sorry but i think i better log off, as its this type of inconsistent stuff that makes me post essays.
Lets just hope for a Spurs win....I'm off...............
Chicken, siggy has not been our best player at all mate. He kind of remind of a better version of Dempsey where he scores some goals but rarely does anything else and looks a weak link in the starting 11. I never rated Dempsey mate and we were right to get rid despite his goals and although I feel siggy is better than Denpsey, he still shouldn't be in our 1st 11. Lamela come on against Cardiff and set up our winner mate. He should of immediately started the next league game after making such an impact but didn't.... Isn't it any wonder why his confidence is a bit low? Sorry but I see Lamela as being one of the best players we have and he will show that soon if given a proper chance in the league. I really hope he starts against hull and is given a massive reaction by the crowd to help him because clearly he's finding it hard to settle.
Lamela is a far better player than Siggy
He's not adapted yet, but imo confidence is the key issue. Handing him a start on sunday would boost him a lot. Also, it's not like Siggy has set the world alight. I think he's been fairly average and the West Ham game for example narrowed us and made us less effective.
Everywhere, couldn't agree more mate and Lamela is far better than siggy. Infact sigurdsson has looked pretty poor in the last 2 games against westham and Villa so if we are using chickens logic for Lamela looking poor then why the hell should siggy start? Lamela for me offers that width and skill on the opposite side to Towsend plus his goal scoring record last season speaks for itself. Give the kid a bloody chance in the league to shine
More than anything we're missing Rose...his bombing down the wing allowed Siggy to move infield. Without those runs, Siggy is still moving in and we play too narrow. Until Rose is back we need to play an out and out winger on the right...my vote right now is Lennon, though Chadli is a fair shout, as is Lamela for 30 minutes to get some game time
Its a difficult one with Lamela. He did cost 30million so expectations are high. Its not really fair on the bloke - he didn't set his own price, he is still a young guy and has to go through the ropes before we see what he is really about. Really unfair to judge him this early.
If he was to score just one goal - pick any of his goals for roma for example - most would want him in the starting line up the next week and the general tardiness of his play would be ignored. Bale last season for example was quite in a lot of the games where he ended up taking the headlines by scoring a wordly
