Always been a quite intolerant state.

Being crude, they have never had a black population due to the climate this created the hostility which continues this.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That's kinda rubbish to be honest.

Eastern Europe, including Russia, was very much a multicultural place in the latter part of the 19th and early part of the 20th Century. However, a series of events culminating in the events before and immediately after the 2nd world war totally changed that.

At the end of the 2nd world war the Communist regime of Russia found itself (by design) in control of much of Eastern Europe. In a way to gain total control (and against the general ethos of socialism/communism) Stalin and his cronies felt that the best way to maintain control was by basically indulging in "ethnic cleansing" (although that term wasn't used until the 90s). To maintain order they basically fostered racism and went about displacing non-natives from their countries - unless you were entirely from that country you were removed and placed where you were from (in the case of the Volksdeutsch, your family could have lived in, say, Poland for 200 years but if you had a German sounding name you were put "back" to Germany).

The result of this was that hundreds of years of multiculturalism was basically destroyed within a couple of decades in pretty much all of Eastern Europe.

This lack of multiculturalism has of course led to blatant racism. Given that the Eastern Block only opened up in the last 20 or so years then it's no surprise that they still have problems - Britain itself had horrific problems with racism in the 80s, a full generation or so after mass black immigration.

Russia (and other Eastern countries) will eventually overcome it's social problems just as we did, so we shouldn't be overly dramatic in our condemnation given that we too suffered similar problems in our society.

I wish I'd read that thread by Red Russinan before going on my little lecture.

Russia may well be a bit intolerant of other races, fine, but surely they can't expect to stage world events which are in essence multicultural.

I would like to see a hard line taken by FIFA in not allowing international football tournaments to be staged in Eastern Europe until they start to make an effort to chuck out these idiots.

I've been to Russia a few times. It's mostly older people who have these racist thoughts and mutter stupid things but young people, not the cha v types who they call 'gopniki', however that's the same for most countries.

I honestly think that the people in the stadiums don't care how they put off the opposition, anything goes and they'll use racial abuse as they would use any other abuse. For me this doesn't make them racist. They don't seem to racially abuse their own players much, which points to them not having racist thoughts but wanting to get at the opposition.

I have a lot of friends from the Soviet Bloc and indeed my wife also and they seem to say things which I find abusive in regards to race but they don't feel any other race is in anyway inferior.

In fact I had a few friends who I'd noticed saying abusive words in regards to Indians, after another friend of mine introduced us to an Indian...a South African...Indian and they thought he was great. They didn't repeat the abusive words again. Thus I do think it's about integration, they don't have much of it. Their governments also push hard in regards to patriotism. They tell their people they are the best, most beautiful etc etc, I'm sure this plays a part also.

A friend of mine also told me that in his country, he was taught in school that the 'N' word described black people.

Toor

Nice to see I'm unfiltered BTW good to have you back.

I just get the impression that as opposed to the UK they turn a blind eye to racial abuse in football, all it takes to redress the balance is to eject to silly minority out of the ground.

Yeah ARE - I felt optimistic about going into this season and you were dragging me into pessimism. When the season got under-way I tried to unfilter you but couldn't.

Anyhow, I agree, punish the individuals, not the clubs/national teams.

Looking better anyway now, the footballs not as good but we are grinding out some results, I'm all for that, I just hope BR won't forget his ideas on pressing the ball and keeping possession.

I can't be bothered to comment but here goes.

Regarding the use of N igger, I recently spent two months teaching in Romania, and the kids all used it freely without considering it offensive. I put this down mainly to American exported music and film, where people say it all the time like it means nothing. Stupid 'Murricans.

Re: Russia. They are racist and violent in my experience. A friend of mine who lived in Moscow had an Asian friend. One night he was walking back through the streets with his girlfriend and a group of Russian guys starting shouting abuse in Russian. After a while He got pis sed off and said something back which they idn't understand, so they proceeded to beat the shizzle out of him, leaving him with a broken arm.

In my personal experience, they don't like non-russians anyway. When people realised i wasn't Russian on the metro in St Petersburg, I was getting all sorts of angry stares, and an old man started shouting in my face. I also watched a group of guys literally kicking another guy's head in in Moscow... with the Police WATCHING on and doing nothing. The police aren't paid enough to actually step in when something happens. It's ridiculous really, as that means that basically anythign goes

All that stuff happens in the UK also.

"they" is a bit of a generalisation. The vast majority of Russians, just like the majority of the population, they don't have this will to shout abuse and assault people but like in every country, there are some idiots who need to show their friends that they are King Mafia and thus pick on who they consider weak, the person different from them, outside of their comfort zone, in another country. This isn't a Russian thing, it's an idiot thing and we have them in every country.

I spent 10 days in Moscow for a mates wedding a few years ago. In that time I had a gun pulled on me and was nearly stabbed in their version of KFC. His now ex wife was the most racist person I have ever met, well until i met his new wife that is.

She came over with him last summer for a visit and a few of us went to Alton Towers for the day. I was stood with her whilst watching a few of the others mess around on the Tea cups when she said "look at all these animals running around, it's like being at the zoo", I said "come one, they are only children", as i assumed she was talking about the kids running about. No, she replied with "No, I mean the black people, they are just like animals". I was so shocked I just stood there with my mouth open in disbelief.

When i asked my mate about this he said that in his 9 years living in Moscow, it is just the norm over there and he was as disgusted as i was, but if he spoke out about it, he was likely to get in trouble for going against what he said are normal views in Moscow.

I just hope that now they are both over here, she will learn that just because someone has different colour skin, does not mean that they are any different to her.

She will have to learn quickly though, they now live in Lewisham.

Everyone should just shake hands.

They should do an exchange programme......swop Moscow people for those in Bradford, Birmingham etc. Soon get the differences aired.

It's not a case of not being multicultural they have well over 100 ethnic groups and races due to the global positioning of Russia.

The issue is they have a large right wing almost verging on Nazism group of citizens.

TOOR, YEs it's not the majority of Russians. In fact most of the youths that now speak english are pretty friendly, but the fact that these things are so commonpplace shows that it's a problem.

You say that there are idiots like that here, but.... I have never witnessed a genuine assault (That wasn't some drunken idiots or a ch av having a go and failing) or seen anyone getting abused in the street for no reason in this country. In Russia i saw it numerous times in a wee

Where do you live cos I've seen plenty of people filled on and abused for no reason whatsoever.

posted on 25/10/13

Oh no i've seen abuse, but none that I would describe as overly physical and i actually felt disgusted by.

I walked to school one day when I was 13(they now put a bus on due to incidents like this) and as I approached around halfway, a group of kids around my age, knowing I was Protestant, British or whatever label you want to give, decided they would give me a kicking. That taught me a lot and that was to be careful where I walk.

So even now, around the UK, people of the same race are getting assaulted, for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

It's so frustrating when people show outrage at countries like Russia when exactly the same things happen here. In fact I'd go as far as saying that Russians are more friendly than English as nearly everytime I go to England I get looks and even once when I was in Liverpool, I ended up in some cha v club at about 4am and some cha v brought a group of his friends over to ask "are you Irish?!", I said no, I'm British and he said, well that's OK then and walked away.

Another time I was in a bar before the game, we were playing Man City(Fowler played for them at that time) and I saw some guys playing pool, with markers down for who's playing next, I thought great, I'll stick a marker down and they'll be happy to have a challenge against somebody not from England. Well I was wrong. So here we are standing wearing Liverpool shirts, having a beer before we head to Anfield and this idiot, when it comes to my turn decides it's his turn again. I was all for saying work away, only I didn't like his tone and how he looked at me. I told him it's my turn and he got nasty, a few seconds later he was picking himself up and muttering, Irish something as he walked to a table. So yeah, again things happen in the UK.

Everytime I've been to England I've met 90% great people, friendly and respectful of all cultures and races but then there's always the uneducated 10% and there always will be, in every country.
