Most people think we played badly against Saints but what they don't seem to realise is that letting Saints have the ball in midfield didn't hurt us.

You cant do fack all if you dont have possession.
Soton had 57% possession.

They did more than us you fooking buffoon. More shots, more shots on goal, more chances.
You are the coward who wants us to play counter attacking football.
I repeat counter attacking football is for utterly cowardly teams who lack creativity.
I will hate if we become solely a counter attacking team
Possession without intent is meaningless. Arsenal have typically had more possession than us when we've played them - but it's all well and good passing it 10 yards to each other, 50 yards from goal - they can't do anything. It's why we've only lost to them once or twice since 2009!
It doesn't matter if you have 70%, or 30% of the possession, what matters is what you do with it.
Simply possession is important in that when you have the ball you can't concede. It's no coincidence that the 2 teams with the highest possession % are Barca and Bayern.
Of course you also need to be pro active with possession and it takes other elements of your game to achieve that but yes possession in todays game is very important.
KEEPING POSSESSION IS THE BEST FORM OF DEFENCE.
We beat Barcelona with 1% possession
I repeat counter attacking football is for utterly cowardly teams who lack creativity.
I will hate if we become solely a counter attacking team

You realise that for many a year, United, and Real have been classed as counter attacking teams.
It was what defined us, we'd soak up pressure, then Ronaldo, Giggs,Rooney, Cole, Yorke, etc, would bomb 40 or 50 yards down the pitch in a matter of seconds, and score.
It's telling that for years, many of our goals started inside our own half, or around the half way line.

You are such a moron. You look at the shots on goal stat and think that's the be all and end all. But how many shots on goal troubled us? None other a scraped home goal from a corner.
You slate teams that play counter attacking football but plenty do, including a team managed by your favourite guy ever Mr Mourinho. Had he taken over at United i'm pretty sure we'd set up the same way.
You can be in control of the game without having the ball

Not really.
United and Madrid in their pomps always had more than 50% possession 9 times out of 10 games.
So not really counter attacking teams we were.
Counter attacks were one of our strong arsenal and not our only weapon

See the second Madrid game for a prime example of this. We had far less possession, but until Nani was sent off, never looked like conceding

I think Jose had to build a counter attacking team at Real because trying to win possession against Barca and playing them at their game was never going to win. Great managers are able to adapt and use the right tactics for the specific game.
Soaking up pressure and counter attacking will worl against a team who like possession but it is also a massive risk. I think in general if a team is able to kepp possession and control a game while also having the players to cause real damage then that is the ideal scenario for a team. We seem to like possession without having that cutting edge.

Exactly. We won the 2008 CL with the best counter attacking team we've ever had.
Robb..... W&R only gets text reports and stats on his internet car.
i agree with wayne here to a point
if you have possession, then the other team have less chance of hurting you.
also without the ball you cant score.
i wouldnt say we were a counter attacking team either to be honest, we always had a decent possession percentage, we just had the ability to break fast.
the fact we had 2 midielders in scholes and keane helped because they could break with pace from the middle.
our current midfield does not allow us to do that.
what we did have though was the ability to break with pace
I think a lot of it comes down to who you're playing against

He sees only numbers like Neo from the Matrix. But in a far less cool way. So uncool that i'd liken him to the Matrix Revolutions Neo to the awesome Matrix one.
Soaking up pressure against the likes of Soton, Stoke, WBA is the worst insult possible for a club of United's stature and robb says he is ok with it.
FOOTBALL IS NOT JUST ABOUT SCORING GOALS, ITS ABOUT SCORING GOALS WITH STYLE
Exactly, like most things it's a balance. Keeping possession will limit your opponents chances but you also need to have the cutting edge element to your game and be able to attack at pace.
For me teams like Bayern and Dortmund do that beautifully at the moment.
