I prefered Shearer, Owen was a and he was only good aged 18-24, after that he was pretty much just injury prone. Shearer should have played another 2 years for England in my opinion.

What did Shearer say?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Basically "make me manager, i couldn't do any worse"
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Whether you like Shearer or not, you've got to agree that he's correct here. He genuinely would not do any worse, would he?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
ask newcastle fans. at roy's last two tournaments he probably wouldn't have done worse, the question is whether he'd have got us there in the first place
----------------------------------------------------------------------
From a pisss easy qualifying group? Yeah I think he would.
But he was still a better striker for England despite that. Unfortunately injuries robbed us of more years of goals for England. And we still haven't replaced him.
Shearer is/was a far better striker than Owen.
Not for England he wasn't.
Why not?
Shearer scored 9 in major tournaments whilst Owen scored 6, Shearer spearheaded England to a semi final Owen did feck all.
No point scoring nothing goals against minnows, score when it matters
Yeah minnows like Argentina, Brazil and Portugal.
Shearer was great in Euro 96 and played in a good team that year as host nations. Like others he didn't reach the same height outside that tournament.
Overall Owen was a better tournament striker and better England striker. He was always a reliable source of goals and could score against big and small nations. Like I said, injuries robbed us of more goals for England.
Club career no comparison, Shearer every day. England national team, I'll take Michael Owen every single time.
Agree to disagree
Wouldn't touch Owen over Shearer in any world.
I cannot agree to diagree over that. If you prefer Shearer but accept there's little between them then fair enough. But to think Shearer was far better as far as England are concerned then you are just wrong.
Owen scored against Argentina, Brazil and Portugal yes but wait we lost all those games
Yeah bloody Owen not saving the goals Brazil, Argentina and Portugal scored. Useless baztard.
How dare he do his best to help us win matches we ended up losing.
Owen over Shearer for England every day of the week for me.
Shearers highlights were 96 and he was rather meh after that. Also his last tournament fans were desperate for him to be dropped.
Shearer at his best was a better player. Injuries ruined his best effectiveness though, and he was pretty average for England after 1996 and arguably should played less. Scoring the winner against the worst German side ever in 2000 doesn't change that.
Owen was very very good for England over a long period and scored big tournament goals against good opposition. He was the new Lineker really, the one England player you could rely on to perform when it mattered.
Don't think we have any of those in the current squad, players who always perform their best level at he highest level.
People seem to forget how good Owen was at his best. He won the ballon d'or beating the likes of raul, figo, Kahn, zidane etc.
He was quite excellent at his best.
Does anyone think anyone in the England team would get in a world 23 man squad? I dont think anyone would get in 5 world 23 men squads. So I dont think any England player is in the top 100 players in the world. Quite astonishing really. This is the worst generation of England players I have ever seen.
Look at some of the players who are getting starting slots? Sterling who has no technical ability. Rose, just average. Smalling. Cahill is poor. Hart is just all bluster and is a really bad keeper who will not be able to fool pep with his over the top confidence. Kane? No technical ability at all. The list goes on. Dier? Is a central midfield player who moves the ball slower than anyone I have ever seen at international level. its one thing trying to act composed but you cant be in acres of space and just take 7 touches. It has to be 2/3 touches to shift the defence and punish the opposition.
I am embarrassed to be english after that performance. The culture in our football world is wrong. THey dont work hard enough. Passion isn't about running around alot during a match. Passion is about working hard in training. Doing extra weights training during the year. Studying football videos at night to be tactically astute. Studying other players in your spare time. Practices technique on your own. We clearly have none of that, our players just want to get some easy money and then just go to clubs and pretend they are a big time player. In reality they are total trash at what they do and its actually nice that every 2 years they get bought down to earth and realise how terrible they actually are at their job.
Look at other sports like cycling in this country. We win at that because the culture is to be the best. Those athletes dont do it just to get a fit bird and to get £100k a week. They do it to be the best. They go the extra mile, which is what real passion is. These players get punished for the lack of effort they put in every 2 years. That effort is not lacking at the events but is lacking in 10-15 years before the event. Everything builds to these tournaments for these players and when they get there they cant control a ball because instead of having the passion to practice their technique they were out playing golf.

We award completely unproven "talent" 100k pw contracts for a couple of half decent performances. Never gonna get far doing that.

Cycling is an interesting case. In a sport where so, so many of their competitors have been caught doping, Brailsford's managed to unearth superhuman after superhuman. Nothing like a Brit with a real will to win.
England were mentally weak and nervous last night.
We may have some decent players but if they dont show the character, togetherness and leadership then England will continue to suffer in the major tournaments.
The players for whatever reason just dont have the balls.

Shameful performance and very predictable, just wish i had a big bet on Iceland as said we would lose before kick off
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeh they would rather play xbox. Look at Ronaldo. That is real passion for football. He has worked his whole life to be the best. That is all he does. Works to be the best. Look at his physique ffs. Look at how hard he has worked on his game. Look at how much better he has got tactically. Even his diving technique has improved.
You could say the same for a ton of other european players. But what about our players? They clearly dont have the passion to be the best at football.
You cant just mess around for 10 years and then expect to win big tournaments. Just like you cant just mess around in athletics for 10 years and expect to just become a gold medalist. Its a life time of work that is required at top level sport and that dedication can ONLY come from the athletes themselves. Nothing more to it. England have terrible players.
Not every player is as a workaholic as Ronaldo.
Also I dont buy into the idea that these England players care little for their national team. They were clearly devasted last night. What I do think is England just lack that real high end qaulity at the moment while I would also question, like I said above, the belief and confidence of the players.
England never looked like they really believed they could win this tournament.
Mentally the team comes across as weak when the real pressure is on.

You'd have to say the same for bale as well tbh. There was a photo comparison of when he signed for real compared to one year later and he had bulked up so hard. Clearly spent a lot of time working hard to make himself the best he can be.
Not enough players are like that.

Yeh the players are overrated because of the foreign players making them look better. Do a terrible pass to the likes of david silva and he will control it and make it look like a good pass. Do a terrible pass to Kane or vardy and it will bounce off him and you lose the ball.
Also the premier league isn't even good anymore. 10 years ago you could say the premier league was one of the best in the world. Now there are basically no good teams in it. Would leicester have finished above bayern, dortmound, barca, real, atletico, psg, juve? No chance.
