Swansea were unlucky there, just didn't have the quality in the final third.
You'd have to think if they had Michu on the pitch, in the form of last season they'd have gone through in this tie.

Spurtle
Wouldn't you want 2 bites of the cherry of getting CL though? Got to give yourself every chance

Your right in what your saying mate but for me it could get in the way of a good finish in the league
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Why not just concentrate on both and when you're out of the race for one then you could put all your focus into the other
Doesn't take much does it, mugs
Even Sherwood would have won that "trophy" you claim faty won us

Does the winner of Europa take the place away from 4th or do 5 teams go through?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Neither this season.
Worst perfomancea in Europe ever under the waiter interim shambles

2015-16 season max of 5 teams from 1 nation. 4th still gets in.
As much as I welcome UEFA's decision to allow the winners to gain Champions League football, how many times has this been needed historically, i.e the winners DID NOT qualify for UCL through league position...?

I think you qualify without having to qualifying or the group stages.
So it's well worth winning.
Come on tiny totts make us proud
Marcy, Atletico did a couple of seasons back.
I was not disputing its worth, just how many times it will actually apply as I can usually remember most Europa League winners qualifying for the Champions League through league position such as Chelsea last season.
Thanks, DJ.
Does anyone think there's a case for the Europa League being a straight knock-out tournament and it maybe not starting until the second half of the season?
Could add excitement and get rid of a lot of the fixtures managers moan about?

Whilst this is fair enough it's not really the point; ensuring direct CL qualification heightens the tournament's marquee at once and that - making it an attractive prospect for TV, spectators and clubs - is the primary reason behind the shake-up. It guarantees that the earlier portions of the tournament are competitive and treated with respect as the latter stages, when a trophy sin is in sight, generally always are anyway.
