England could do with gareth bale and ramsey.. even ryan giggs and George best back in the day. A british team would have probably won a few European chapionships maybe even a world cup or 2 if things worked out that way.

We have a good group of young talent that is the key.Now we need someone in charge who will bring them through.Dare i say it we may need to look to a foreign manager.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It terrifies and depresses me to think what Hodgson is doing/going to do to these youngsters. You wouldn't think it possible, but he's going to set us back even more

At the end of the day it doesn't matter who the manager is or what league they play in,if the players are not good enough.

The reality is, Hodgson isn't good enough to manage this group of players and those coming through over the next 2-4 years.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
All he needed to do was to use a system to control the midfield/game and supply the attacking players (where we have our best players/brightest talent).

@bruceandpally
I agree but united dominated English football due to good management. The same group of player that won the league by miles finished midtable with a poor manager.

With a good manager we'd have done much better with Scholes, Gerrard, Lampard, etc at their peak.

Hodgson's biggest mistake was not taking a.cole.
No need to take shaw so young, it was obvious he was out of his depth in the friendlies.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Cole wouldn't have made a difference in the slightest. Most people pre World Cup would still have wanted Baines.

All of them are very similar. Welbeck, Ox, Sterling. Lots of pace, but what do they do when a team denies them the space to move into?

maybe but not after his performance v Italy and cole would have tightened up the defence tonight.

But the players are good enough. They show they're good enough at club level and can compete vs the best in the world.

For me the biggest mistake was playing 2 in midfield vs world class teams.

If you let good teams have the ball they'll eventually hurt you.

I'm thinking of the next 2-4 years anyway, players like Wilshire, barkley, sterling, Walcott, sturridge, lallana.

Hodgson isn't good enough to develop a winning side out of these players, other managers are.

Just remind where English clubs have ended up in Europe the last couple of years?

We lack an out and out winger. We play so narrow and don't have the players to keep the ball

And do something with it. We had 63% of the ball today. Did we really have any incisive, creative play? Nope.

But when you have a midfield where one is essentially a domestique for the other central midfield, you won't create.

But this is down to their youth. They will improve, and become more rounded players. Look how much Sterling has improved this season. His all round game has improved immensely and he's still only 19. To suggest he's average is ridiculous.

What always strikes me is that all these players are allegedly really good coz they play for top prem sides........but the reality is that none of them would get a game at a top european side.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeh. And we underestimate the effect the world class foreigners have on the english lads. Rooney gets way more space because they are focussing on RVP. The whole liverpool team is made to look better due to suarez. It is painfully obvious.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
rubbish. If we were Uruguayan you'd pick holes in the team and point out weak links.
Both sides had strong and weak areas, Uruguay played to their strengths better, we didn't.

That's partly down to players but for me Hodgson must take the blame for tonight's performance.
He made the wrong subs and should have started with lallana.

We really needed a creative player in the middle during those tight one touch interchanges.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Uraguay are a poor side. A really poor side. It was one of the lowest quality matches of the tournament in my opinion. They are a small nation though. Population wise.

posted on 20/6/14

the lack of top class striker options is also worrying. After Rooney and Sturridge there is no one. No one even close to come through

I watched an episode of the brilliant BBC drama 'This Life', which i highly recommend btw. One of the characters, Miles, was talking about football to his flatmate and he said:

"We (England) just can't keep the ball like the French or Italians" it was filmed in 1996, nearly twenty years ago...why has nothing changed? Every tournament we go out of it's a major problem.

capping the amount of foreign players in starting 11 is the only way to improve national team

Over the last 10 years we've won the CL/reached the more than any other league in Europe. Over the same period England achieved very little.
