Firstly, Smalling is better than Caulker.
Secondly, this comment makes me feel sick:
I would hate to see foreigners lead our defence..they just dont have the same commitment and passion.
Vidic, Evra and Hernandez have far more passion and commitment than some of the English players we have now let alone some we've had in the past, as well as players such as Ronaldo, Cantona, Solskjaer or Schmeichel who were passionate and committed foreign players we've had at our club.
Vincent Kompany.
You're article is now invalidated.
@Darren the king Fletcher
Smalling is shocking his footwork is too slow.
Im not saying we shouldn't have foreigners but I rather have a good english centreback in our team or two if possible. I would like us to keep our tradition of having english players this would allow us to have silky foreign attackers in our team bcus england hardly produce any decent attackers/dribblers.
I dont want us to do an arsenal where thay had hardly any decent english players for the last 8 years until now..hence no trophies.
Class player, gutted we let him go. Not one for a high line though

Talking rubbish.
And Smalling's footwork is shocking and too slow. He can pass the ball well. Better defender than Caulker, and I rate Caulker highly.
The defence has been shaky but I think that's been down to more things than individual ability.
Let's see what you're saying when Cardiff get 4 put past them and Caulker has a shocker.
@darren
Im saying most title winning squads in the bpl have always had a strong english centre back to provide that core bruce palister ferdinand - other teams- terry, tony adams etc
You're right we will win that game but I doubt caulker will have a shocker.
Never thought about that it's obvious that an English team will have English players rather than having English players means it's better and that they have more passion and commitment.
Ronny Johnsen, Henning Berg and Jaap Stam were three of the most important players in the greatest season in our history.
Nationaly and commitment, passion and most importantly quality are not mutually exclusive.
Thats the past now..most clubs now are looking at English players again...stats say theirs too many foreigners in our league compare to our own breed..now thats shocking!
If smalling was that good he be starting games by now and at centre back..but hes not!!
Caulkers miles better!
Surely the fact it was in the past, in a period more dominated by English players than foreign players, makes your point more redundant.
Smalling isn't starting games because he keeps getting injured and he's got two foreigners (Evans and Vidic) starting ahead of him.
Caulker wouldn't be playing either if he played for us rather than Cardiff.

If he keeps geting injured it does him no favours.hes a utility player at best
Whether that will be the case or not doesn't validate anything you've said.
I'm sorry but as much as i rate Caulker he isn't a better centre back than Chris Smalling, he IS our Rio replacement.
He's played a lot at right back this season because Rafa's been injured, Moyes doesn't seem to fancy Fabio to come in for him and Smalling is the only other defender who can adequetly play there.
You say that if Smalling was any good at centre back he'd be playing there now but with that logic you could say if Caulker was any good he'd still be at Spurs
@brightdave
Vidic and evra gained the captaincy through time...their time is surely comin to end under the new management.
All im saying is since our teams going to change in the next few transfer windows..I would love for us to have a solid english centre back like ferdinand. Whats the harm in that
There's no harm in wanting an English cb. It's the ridiculous reasoning that people don't agree with.
Wanting an English cb is solely dependent on a bias and preference for your own nationality.
Whether people think that's a rational argument or not is a different debate, however, there's more reasoning to that than there is the reasons you've offered up.

Totally disagree with the foreigners comment. Borderline insanity that one.....Kompany, Skrtel, Koscielny, Vertonghen, Vidic.....there's 5 of the current best CBs in the PL....whaddaya know, all foreign
Smalling I am still unsure of. As a CB he always looks very good but as a RB I think he's average at best. I would still rate him higher than Caulker to be honest.
First of all Smalling is better than Caulker and is Rio's replacement.
Second thing, I'm a great believer in earning a spot in the team by merit and not nationality. We live in a global village now and picking people because they are english or british over someone else because they are foreign who is more talented is wrong. No matter the motive.
The best man should always get the job.
You get articles like this and then people wonder if I am a wum or something
"...compared to our own breed"

Christ on a bike.
So in a team which has been inspirationally led by the likes of Vidic, Keane and Cantona it is imperative we have an English centre back? And in order to achieve this you are advocating ... selling a talented young English centre back to make room for one? Even though we also have Jones coming through the ranks and youth team graduate Johnny Evans was born closer to Manchester than a swathe of English territory?
The OP isn't even consistent in applying the (fundamentally flawed logic) of his argument.
Xenophobic and moronic article. And the fact the OP uses the ridiculous phrase 'bpl' raises the suspicion that he/she is not living in this country. If so, Does that mean you don't have the same commitment/passion as a United English fan??
Good grief
