Here's Brian Clough on Mick the player:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMP3zVs_MI4
He was WRONG - Mick kept England out and Ireland won 1-0.
Oh dear oh dear, obvious tension there.
Get over it.
What a muppet.
The best and worst man to ask about Martin O'Neill's appointment as manager of Ireland and his decision to take Roy Keane on as his assistant was former Ireland manager Mick McCarthy. Now with Ipswich, McCarthy had a widely publicized falling out with Keane when the ex-midfielder played under him in 2002 that resulted in Keane publicly berating McCarthy and walking out on the World Cup. So how would he respond to questions about the "bad cop/bad, bad cop" partnership of O'Neill and Keane filling his old seat? Creepily.
McCarthy was asked the harmlessly needling question of how well he thinks O'Neill and Keane will do at his Thursday press conference ahead of Ipswich's match against Blackpool on Saturday. He responded by silently staring at the reporter who asked with his bedroom eyes. The reporter persisted with following questions, even going so far as to ask why he wouldn't answer, but McCarthy just smirked and said "I'm just a little confused about you."
He then denied having a falling out with Keane at the 2002 World Cup ("Was I asleep for that or something?" and went off on a tangent about how successful he was as Ireland manager before resuming his silent treatment. In short, it was the most fantastic press conference so far this season.
------------------------------------------
He brags about his success in the 2002 WC, but doesn't mention that a few months later, due to poor results in trying to qualify for Euro 2004 he resigned whilst under huge pressure.
He's certainly a character, I'll give him that and it did come across as sour grapes that he wasn't appointed, in my humble opinion of course.
Haven't looked at the Ipswich forum but I would be surprised if a few are not a little peed off by this interview.
Just been over there - they are delighted that he is staying.
I am sure they are happy he is staying UNC, the point was that I imagine some of them did not like the content of this interview and what it said.
It is quite clear he wanted the Ireland job.
Anybody would want the job. In other news, the good folk of Sandwell have made the news again:

He's too much of a gentleman. Interesting to see WITSS going on about Mick yet again, even though he berates others for mentioning the name! Double-standards as usual.
Good on Mick though. I'd love to have a go at Roy Keane the nonce.
Mick was a grand master at leading the press a merry dance Wolfgang, you are correct you van not help but love the man.
Maybe I should start a thread about Mick...
No need, its already here
You have a free reign on talking about the big man, go for your life.
Yeah, but mine would be from a different angle. Can KJ emulate Mick, or should we sack him once back in the Champo in order to "move forward", as 95% of us would like to happen? That kind of thing... I'm on a boat right now so will have to consider posting it later...
I'm on a boat ???
Where ??
It is quite possible that KJ will not take us to the next level after this one, the evidence of his career so far points that way.
But he is our manager and deserves solid backing from the fans until such time that it appears we are not moving forward anymore, just like every manager at every club on earth.
I was heading back to Bute on a ferry. Had spent the previous night at Himley.
Cinci - you may be right. Some will say we should have sacked Mick once he'd got the club promoted. (I don't agree with that, incidentally.) To those people I'd ask, "when should KJ get the chop?"
Maybe once 95% of fans realise he's no longer moving the club forward?
Of course I back him whilst we're maintaining our current promotion challenge!
To me a manager always has to be judged on whether they are meeting the targets set by the board and by the fans. The only target for Jackett this season is promotion and I said back in August that given the squad he has, his job would come into question if he didn't achieve that. But I think he will achieve it so its quite right then that he is then given the chance to achieve the next target.
I don't think getting promoted out of the Championship next season is a reasonable target. But as a club that wants to get back to the Premier League as soon as possible I do think he needs to be set the target of getting Wolves into the top 6 of the Championship in our second season back at that level. And I would expect his job to come under threat if he doesn't achieve that. And to show he is on the right track we certainly don't want to be a struggling team next season so I think he needs to get us to halfway at least to avoid losing some support.
I would say that is just about spot on DJ.
That's an excellent post, DJ. As Cinci says, you have got it just about right.
