In today's society it shouldn't be a big deal.

But because of football being so anti-gay, it's pretty big news.

In all of the top leagues, in all of the squads there is not a single gay player to officially come out other than Robbie Rogers and even then he felt the need to retire. That's ridiculous.

Something has to be done and that is why this has made the news.

It's not like he called a press conference and announced it or something - it came up in an interview. Clearly it's a positive if it helps diminish any taboo, though it seems telling that players currently playing are much more reticent to reveal such information, although it's not like they have any obligation to do so.

The views expressed by ninja is the reason why people are scared to come out.

A very brave thing to do

It shouldn't need to be an issue, but the fact remains that football still has a bit of a problem with homophobia and the only real way to get out of that is for players to come out publicly. Maybe 20 years down the line when there have been tens or hundreds of players to come out, it won't be such a big deal, but when there have only been 4 professional players in history who are openly gay it's a bit more significant.

Maybe, just maybe, there aren't that many people who are gay who play football? Maybe 999/1000 are straight? It's very possible...

There's loads of gay people in the entertainment industry so I guess it sort of evens out.

Seems to be some sort of assumption that there's a good number of gay people in every walk of life, when this may very well not be the case.

Either way there's no reason that every gay footballer should need to announce their sexuality, their private life is their private life.

It's not very likely that 999/1000 footballers are straight. The assumption that there is a certain proportion of gay people in various walks of life is based on statistics and research, though it can vary from job to job.
Gay people should not have to hide their sexuality, and they are obviously are in football. It's pretty strange to dismiss a player (1 of four in history) as an attention seeker when he's been in the closet for a decade hiding his sexuality. There are plenty of gay attention seekers, of course, and if you don't like attention seekers you don't have to hang out with them. However, not every guy that comes out is a petty attention seeker.

Someone said there might not be many gay footballers and thinking about it I can only recall ever meeting 2 gay people who liked football. As I have lived in the brighton area nearly all my life and kemptown for 15 years thats a lot of gay people. btw, one of the 2 was the world famous dj in the 90s, Tony de Vit.
