If we win the title £42 mill would be a bargain.

On his displays alone? No.

On the influence he's had and the balance he gives to a team that 6 months on are top of the league when they were being touted to finish 6th? Oh yeah. Worth every penny.

Think I'm right in saying he's created the most goal scoring opportunities in the league? Hasn't been the world beater some thought he might yet, but if what we've seen so far isn't his best then I can't wait for what's still to come.

If we don't?

When you have the likes of Ronaldo, Bale, Benzema, Isco, Modric and Di Maria and STILL miss Özil then you know he's an important player.

I have been criticising some of his performances lately. At the moment he is a match winner for us, certainly, but he also loses the ball in positions where he really shouldn't. Despite this, it's important to look at his off-the-ball play, the way he keeps things ticking and the fact that this meme fits him perfectly:

Going past 4 players and then hitting the top corner from 40 yards out isn't the only thing that makes a player world class. He gives similar performances for germany and gave similar performances for madrid yet everyone thought he was world class then.

Forget what he does with the ball for a second. Its his off the ball work thats impressed me most. The gaps he finds and spaces he moves into allow the players around him abit more freedom.

It seems we're too scared to criticise him also. Almost like walking on eggshells. The same luxury is not afforded to other players.

Someone mentioned this yesterday but stop comparing to Cesc. You might not admit it but we're all comparing him to Cesc in our heads. Yes they both have the same job to create chances but the way they do it are different.

Criticism is most welcome. However people constantly getting on the back of a player that he only just moved to a new country and league and is still stacking up impressive attacking stats is a bit ponderous.

It was the club Arsenal FC that thought he was worth £42.5m. Don't really see the issue with it.

I assume because he isn't scoring every game that's what you mean? He's been quiet in some games yes but I don't think he's done bad enough to criticise. Also, we always criticise our players when they play bad, don't you read these boards

i didnt think he played very well yesterday anhe seems to be a bit of a homer where he playes better at home then away but saying that didnt he get an assist last nigjt? Or at least was viatl in one of the goals? So despite not playing great he still made a vital contribution.

His stats for a first season are very good and you could afford to pay what you did, like youve not put yourselves in debt due to his signing so who cares what you spent on him, if youve got it spend it

There are definitely too many on here that are too scared to criticize.

He has been ok to date and was spoilt at Madrid with the likes of ronaldo in the team.

Saying that I would like to see more

He's a midfielder. It's not his job to score goals. That's for our statue. He's been good in general. But not at £42m imo. Not yet anyway. Next year will see him flourish.

That's a fair comment If what we've seen so far is just a preview then we can only get excited about what's still to come

I posted something on a similar subject yesterday:
I don't think it's a case of him not having settled yet; when a player is underperforming, it's often the case that they're simply not playing in a system that best suits their style, and I think that is what we're seeing with Ozil.

If you recall his first game for us against Sunderland, he was exceptional and played through a number of excellent through balls. Within a few games, he was joint top assister in the league, despite having only joined at the end of the transfer window.
Far from struggling to settle, it seemed as though Ozil hit the ground running.

He was the most creative player in Europe (according to the stats) when we signed him, and we saw just how destructive he could be in his first few games for us.

But then Walcott got injured, and combined with the injuries to Podolski and Chamberlain, we were bereft of pace and movement. A far-cry from the incisive counter-attacking side that was picking teams apart at lightning speed, we had to adapt our approach in the absence of pace, adopting a much more patient, methodical approach.

As good a player as Ozil is, he is not a Fabregas style player that's going to dictate games from deep, nor is he an Henry-type who can single-handedly destroy teams; he's a master of the through-ball, who can drift in and out of games, and then pop-up with the killer pass - but his style demands runners alongside him if we're to see the best of him.

Until we bring in an attacking player more willing to run-in-behind the opposition, then we probably won't see the best of him, IMO.

He hardly played with Walcott or Pod. They were out injured.

posted on 14/1/14

This is true.

We don't have any pace out wide when we play central midfielders there and it does all get congested in the middle.

Prices are dependent on how much the team needs them, it would have been a lot for bayern, but we needed both ozil and the transfer quite a bit.

Also, he is always underrated. His ball retention and passing in tight spaces in the final third is phenomenal.

Yesterday we were dominating a first half against a well drilled team away from home, wilshere has much of the plaudits this morning, but it was ozil who dropped deep to collect the ball and put through a penetrating ball down the left to open up the game.

Price is relevant to the teams needs. Given our year thus far, ozil has been worth the money, even if his signing has simply given belief to the rest of the team.

"He hardly played with Walcott or Pod. They were out injured."

That's my point; he's looked underwhelming because he's barely played with Walcott.
His best game for me was his debut, where he was able to feed Walcott and co. through a number of times. But then Walcott got injured, and we haven't really seen that same incisiveness from him, or the team as a whole since, IMO.
