Cristiano Ronaldo - The GOAT?

I don't think that Ronaldo's form this year should be used as a stick to bash Messi with.

Ronaldo has been the best player in the world this year and has been fairly close to Messi over the last few years. Messi has struggled with injuries and that has hindered him from winning the Balon d'Or this year.

Having been born in 1989, I don't think that I can offer a realistic judgement of the GOAT, but Messi is the best player I have ever seen, with both Ronaldos close behind.

It's ignorant to call Messi lazy and brush off his talent as a "natural gift". Obviously, you don't become the best player in the world without putting in a mammoth number of hours on the training ground and having a huge drive for self improvement.

Even people with the greatest natural talent in football won't make it past Sunday League level if they don't have the right attitude and temperament. Does anyone really think that Messi was born with the ability to dribble with the ball figuratively glued to his feet while maintaining a panoramic vision of his surroundings or to shoot with an almost unerring accuracy with either foot?

Is this a joke? C. Ronaldo is a phenomenal player but he probably isn't even in the top 3 players of all time. For god sake Pele led Brazil to two world cups and Maradona the same single handedly and made a Napoli team into Serie A champions. The original Ronaldo in his heyday was also an amazing player.

Also as good as his goalscoring record is Cristiano hasn't won much with Madrid (one la liga title and two domestic cups I think) which in four odd years is hardly a spectacular record when compared with Messi who has usually outscored him (last season aside) and won a lot more domestically. Add to that his style of play and Barca's club side in 2008 and that is why many call him one of the greatest of all time. For me he still has to prove it in this world cup though..Personally I prefer Messi but Ronaldo has worked ridiculously hard so credit to the lad

For me personally though, this should have been Ronaldo's third Ballon D'or, while Messi should have had two. Was good to see the emotions of Ronaldo - I think deep down he knew, if he wasn't winning it this year he won't win it again.

How is Ronaldo the GOAT now if he scored around 60 goals this year, when last year Messi got over 90? Messi was injured for the later stages of this year had he not been injured it would have been closer.
Congratulations to Ronaldo, he deserved it this year, but you fanboys are ridiculous.

He expected to win it, no doubt. His tears aren't different from Nadal's annual tears in the French Open when he wins. And the tears were amusng to see cos for the better part of the last half-decade, he's been claiming he doesn't care about the Ballon D'Or when Messi was cleaning it up.

Messi's injuries affect his form? Never. Those 93 goals the previous year were all flukes.

Ronaldo of Brazil was phenomenal but, to be honest, is overly glorified due to nostalgia. The seizure on the eve of '98 World Cup Final built his legend.

If you re-watch Ronaldo's goals during those halcyon nights in France and, in fact, all of his 14 WC goals, you'll see that none were spectacular - mostly poachers finishes.

I'm glad he won it though. Prefer watching him to Messi

It's actually been noted by many in the media that had FIFA not extended the voting deadline (fortunately including the period of the dramatic Portugual-Sweden qualifier which Ronaldo aced), Messi would have won again. I can imagine the uproar if the same was done with Messi having the momentum. The conspiracy theories would have been hilarious to read.

im talking about when he was at PSV, Barcelona and his early days at Inter, 40 goals a season striker and best in the world at 18/19, Messi and CR7 have achieved more in terms of goals, assists etc, but in terms of pure unadulterated and devastating talent nobody for me even comes close to O Fenomeno

Ronaldo and messi cannot be considered the greatest of all time until they deliver on the international stage in my opinion.
---------------------------------------------

The international stage is overrated. Certainly in the modern game. Ronaldo's Portugual don't have enough going forward and Messi's Argentina have a very unstable backline. I'd bet good money both of them will ever win the World Cup.

If only they were born Spanish. A bit like Pele playing for Brazil. Everyone else may as well not bother playing. Messi should have done a Costa when he was approached in his teens by Spain.

When Messi was in his teens Spain weren't the established international force they are now. Argentina have far more international pedigree than Spain who'd won fack all until 2008. And it's not beyond the realms of possibility that Argentina could win the WC next year, they have a good side and will be playing in familiar conditions.
------------------------------------------------

Spain have always been very highly rated all my years of watching football and every one's favourite dark horse in tournaments. They just never really got it together for some reason. They alway had good plyers all over the pitch.

Argentina have some incredible forwards but their midfield and defence isn't good enough to win the World Cup.

They kicked you more back then as well.

Maradona dragged a average argentine side to a world cup singe handedly, through sheer individual brilliance and a helping hand.
-----------------------------------------

Proper myth. Nobody wins anything without a monumental team effort. Argentina were a very solid team, slightly lacking in creativity without Maradonna. They were far from journeymen being carried by Maradonna.

Maradonna as a player would never have rescued that Argentina team coached by himself in the 2010 World Cup.

Yeah, for all the diving around of the latino/S.American teams, they can be very cynical and aggressive in the tackle. You only need to watch caants like Pepe and Mascherano.
