Cristiano Ronaldo - The GOAT?

Did you see who a bunch of all these well known coaches and players voted for? They all just vote for their team mates, countrymen, both or most likely their mates. It's a joke, nothing but a popularity contest.

It's actually been noted by many in the media that had FIFA not extended the voting deadline (fortunately including the period of the dramatic Portugual-Sweden qualifier which Ronaldo aced), Messi would have won again. I can imagine the uproar if the same was done with Messi having the momentum. The conspiracy theories would have been hilarious to read.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Nothing wrong with extending the voting, it would have been idiotic not to. The award is for the year of 2013, if anything voting should take place in Jan 2014.

Well done again Cristiano. A deserved winner.

It's facking hilarious seeing all the Messi fan girls squirm, already been filtered by one of them

Every Ronaldo fan even truly knows Messi is better and naturally I'd say with a bit to spare, Ronaldo certainly deserved the award on monday though

I think Messi is a GREAT player, however, a lot of if lies to natural ability. That is why I hold Ronaldo greater than him. Just reading interviews from current and former coaches and players, they signal Ronaldo's unwavering commitment to becoming the best player in the world.

If you compare a teenage Messi to the current one, their game is pretty much the same. While Ronaldo is barely recognisable as a teenager to his current self. Every facet of his game has improved to become the best all round player in the world.

Agreed mate.

Messi is more skilful but Ronaldo is by far the more complete player.

Ronaldo definitely deserved it this year but i'd still have Messi over him as his records and achievements speak for themselves. People also seem to forget that Ronaldo is at peak age as he'll be turning 29 in a few weeks whereas Messi is only 26 so you could argue he'd get even better. Both unbelievable players though .

No wonder he calls himself 'Sheriff'.
So he can stroll in with his little pony, split up fights, "keep it real" and basically just save the day.

Eh?
Usain Bolt has always had his commitment and work ethic questioned but he's easily the greatest sprinter on the planet. Who cares who works hardest? The execution of the players on the pitch is all that matters.

And Messi is a vastly different player from his teens. He's far more economical with his movement and makes far less dribbling runs than he used to make. He's not the all-action kid that broke through who always wanted the ball at his feet. He spends much more time off the ball now and he can look borderline lazy in certain games.

Whether Ronaldo is more complete than Messi or not is disputable. It's conventional wisdom because being bigger, he has the greater physical qualities which gives him a few advantages elusive to Messi - especially in the air. But as far as I'm concerned, Messi's all-round play is multi-faceted enough to easily measure up.

What is ridiculous is qualifying the comparison with the word "far". You must think Messi is Chamakh or something.

Maradona smashed both of them. Messi disappears at International level and Ronaldo is a flat track bully - looks great against the likes of Birmingham City, Osasuna, Sweden.

Maradona carried Barcelona, Napoli and Argentina at a time when the game was largely defensive. He could also do it whilst allegedly tripping his nuts off.

In my view the whole award is a farce itself. The winner is who is best in self-marketing these days. Dont take it serious.

Ronaldo best in the world

Ronaldo should thank his lucky stars Messi was injured alot last year. He deserved it but is still behind Messi.
Its Pele, Maradona, Ronaldo(9), Messi, Ronaldo(7).

What did you want Messi to do though..? Reinvent himself as a goalkeeper or something?

Proper myth.
--------------------
No it's not.
---------------------

Yes, it is
-------------------------------------

Then you have lost all credibility. Maradonna scored 2 in the quarters including a goal where he ran past 7 players. Scored 2 in teh semi's and set up the winner in the final. He basically scord or set up at least one goal per game every game.

That Argentina team were incredibly average and in competition against an extrenmely strong West German team and very strong French, English, Brazilian and Italian teams.

Seriously if you think Argentinia would have got anywhere near winning the 86 WC without him you don't know your football in my opinion.

Messi, Ronaldo, Ronaldo, Messi........fack the whole lot of you!!!.....the GOAT is a bald Frenchman named Zidane!!

And so this thread is over!!

Utter load of nonsense. If Argentina's defending was rubbish, they would have achieved diddly squat, with or without Maradonna. Suggesting any player did anything single-handedly is absurd. You don't win without a monumental team effort. Worse teams than that Argentina, like Greece and Denmark, have swept major tournaments. I bet if Greece had a stand-out individual, world class performer in Euro 2004, many would claim the player won it "single-handed".

I haven't anywhere denied Maradonna was Argentina's most important player. I've merely sought to highlight the big contributions of others, so I don't understand your argument. It's a pet hate of mine hearing people bleating about a player dragging his team to a title or cup "single-handedly". They're either massively exaggerating or they don't have a clue how the game works.

And to say that Argentine team were "incredibly average" is nonsense. Without Maradonna, they wouldn't have been much different from the likes of Germany, Italy and England. Excluding Maradonna, they were a well-organized, technically proficient, aggressive, competitive side slightly lacking in the flair and individual brilliance of Diego. But then again, other than Brazil, most of the other competitors didn't look amazing either. Even without Maradonna, Argentina would have been a hard side to beat.

Argentina's defence was average and let in goals in every game bar 2 which were against minnows.

West Germany had an incredible team. France also and Englands was none too shabby.

I'll say it again;

Argentina's defence was average, and yet they ground out the World Cup win with a relatively low scoring team? Now it's clear you don't have a clue what you're talking about. Maybe, actually watch the matches. It's clear to me you've simply rehashed the lazily embellished lines you heard about Maradonna's "single-handed" exploits.
