Kos and Djourou were really good together, I think for about two or three months in 2010-11. Think Djourou got injured and then Vermaelen came back, or someone else came in, and then Mertesacker was signed in the summer.

Even I have to admit Kos is a top defender and I didn't rate him at all for a long time, however I think you guys under rate mertesacker personally i think he is just as or nearly as good.

Pat was nearer 20, and came in from Milan (little club in Italy), where he was considered something of a flop as I recall. Before that he was one of the youngest players to ever captain Cannes.
Kos does have mistakes in him and does make mistakes fairly regularly. The thing is Mert behind him knows what he is going to do and positions himself to include the possibility he will mop up after Kos on a regular basis. Its the partnership that works really well.
What the partnership means is that both can play to their strengths, Kos attacks the ball and Mert plays a positional game. Neither of them are perfect defenders but there is an argument that they form a perfect partnership.

2. cover koscielnys area because koscielny is too chit to do it by himself. honestly i think we'd do better without him on the pitch
Koscielny is a top defender, and a top player in general. It can frustrate me when people laugh at the suggestion that he is one of the best in the league by pointing out some of his errors, whilst neglecting the errors that the likes of Kompany and Vidic have made.
As someone already mentioned, he is exceptional on the ground. He can deal with tricky, slippery players and he can also deal with speed-merchants. I still think that he's slightly suspect against powerful strikers, but he's definitely bulked up and improved himself in that aspect.
Due to the nature of his game, being that he is pro-active, he's snappy in the tackle, he can slightly over-commit which is exactly why Mertesacker is the perfect partner for him, and why Vermaelen is the worst type of partner for him.
