Pogba is getting extremely overrated.
Quite shocking that when you think about all of the traits listed in the OP, I could only argue for Carrick of the current crop having any one of them (the all round passing game).
That said, the game has changed across Europe in the last ten years, and how many midfield players are there out there that 'boss the game' the way that the likes of Robbo, Keano and Vieira used to?
It's a more compact, intelligent, tactical game now; half of achieving anything at all as a midfielder at the top level is about positioning in the modern game.
Apart from the heading, fabregas can do all of those. Such a class player. Not a wum by the way because you didn't get him, I'm glad barca took him so he was unable to destroy spurs anymore

Agree.
Would've bloody loved it if we'd got him in the summer
Would have got Fabregas if we'd stumped up the cash
If you'd done it before thiago was sold I reckon so, not a chance afterwards
"Would have got Fabregas if we'd stumped up the cash"
Of course you would have. Just like Ozil and Thiago too, I presume?

I disagree, it's are you see Carrick ping a long ball or create a chance directly. Everybody thought we'd see it with RVP coming in but it hasn't happened.
This range of passing is, I'm fact, a myth. He is goods t recycling possession, and picking the safest pass. He has on occasion made a top quality pass, ie Giggs vs Chelsea, but his passing ability isn't even close to being comparable to Scholes.
He OP is right. We will never see another Paul Scholes.

It was well documented Ozil was holding out for a move to United during the summer.
Regardless of Moyes pedigree as a manager why would Ozil want join a bunch of players who continuously scrape it into the top 4 over the newly crowned champions who have a habit of winning?

Enjoy that 4th place trophy you're chasing this season. Haha
Cesc never considered joining you. He said so himself. Thiago just ignored you.
I think you have to accept that Paul Scholes was an exceptional player, and players like him don't come around too often. The problem is that rather than become obsessed with trying to replace such players, you have a squad within which there are enough top quality players so that you can challenge trophies.
The Ronaldos, Messis, Scholes, Xavis, Zidanes of this world are few and far between, and to get any player of that level has a little bit of luck involved, but there are a lot of quality players just below that level who would add greatly to our squad, and that is the type of player we must concentrate on getting, especially in CM. Mata is a great addition in an attacking sense, now (or in the summer if not available now) we must get similar quality in midfield.
well, to answer to your question we have had 2 or 3 players in our history who could do these things as well or better than Scholsy

I was by no means comparing Carrick's passing ability to Scholes'. Only arguing that he can deliver consistently and accurately over pretty much any distance.
And in generating assists, that hasn't been his role at United in the main. It's been intercept the ball, keep it, recycle it, get it out wide for the wingers to create from.
Agreed Rosso, we need more than that from our midfielders though.

True, but I hope people aren't expecting to see marauding box to box types being deployed with what I am assuming will be an eventual move to a 4-2-3-1.
I don't think united were in for ozil and judging by his recent performances if they were then they dodged a bullet. So glad we got mata instead. Usual arsenal pallava. This dubbed Wenger will be back in his closet in march

I think you need one of those, in a Toure mould who an do everything.
Alongside a specialist defensive midfielder. Martinez is the ideal example. He has all the ability of Carrick on the ball but offers so much off it.
We can get our flair from the players further up the pitch IMO, energy and ability to retain the ball are key for us in that role now IMO.
Now that it has been proven the Ozil has failed in the premier league
Glad we avoided him
Agree that you can work with one of those types of players in a narrow 4-2-3-1, but you need to play a certain way, high up the pitch and with quickish CBs, and it helps if that midfielder is a strong athlete and an exceptional talent, like Yaya.
I would also call Scholes the United player of all time. Truly phenomenal.
Best there is, best there was, the best there ever will be.
