i think now Carricks injured its a must
Carrick just rolled his ankle with no ligament damage. He'll not be out for two months I'd have thought. We shouldn't get into panic buying again alla Fellaini just because there's only 3or so days left unless a pearl pops up.
leftback is a more concern
we should, because of where we at, it is time to panic.

Lets panic
so which panic buy of a player is out there available and suitable to do Carricks job?
if vidal or Gundogan was available for say 30 million, the importance of the CL next season is worth that 10 miilion more in lost revenue at least.
so we offer 40, easy
just bring scholes back ffs

doesn't that panic buy deal remind you of anything? Fellaini....
"I've got a big job to do here and a couple of new signings isn't all that is needed. I think there's a bigger job to be done but you have to start somewhere. If you asked me what I needed most, I would have said a central midfielder. I could do with a left-back, too, but sometimes you don't always get the pieces of the jigsaw at the time. It's all part of a rebuilding process."
Does Moyes read this site? Nearly everyone is in agreement we need a LB and midfielder. Anyway, I think the window is over for us. We're clearly holding out for the bigger star names in the summer. For now we'll have to make do with Jones in midfield till the season ends.

you'll always have to pay more mid season, especially if these players are playing week in week out ( the 30 million was basedon the summer, should have made it clearer).

Can't see anyone fundamentally disagreeing with the OP. Since the point at which Hargreaves' injuries were putting his career in doubt and Scholes was slowing down that should have been a priority of Fergie's. I would have liked to have seen a big chunk of the Ronaldo money spent on that.
For now though the question is whether we improve the midfield a bit now or wait to improve it a lot in the summer. That's a marginal issue, given the short term importance of pushing for fourth, but also the longer term need to invest more widely in the team and raising our standards to compete with the European elite.

Jones is too injury prone to rely on him for the rest of the season.
All of our central midfielders seem to be injury prone

like i said earlier, if a player is available in the summer and we have to overpay by 10 million to get him now, then we should pay it if its gonna help make the CL places.
we'll lose more than that in lost revenue anyway.
Michael Brown could do a job and he'd be relatively cheap
There is the risk that we could go out and improve the midfield now by overpaying for someone and still miss out on the top 4. Signing a midfielder or left back won't guarantee top 4, though obviously it would improve our chances.
I am sitting on the fence a bit here. I would dearly like us to sign a CM (well 2 actually) and a left back but we should only be lookign for players who will tangibly improve us both in the short and long term. No point in splashing out on an average player just for the sake of it, we have enough of them already!

I suppose it depends on what Moyes intends to do with our existing CMs. If he is going to get rid of one or two then he could bring someone in who is an improvement on what we have got, but that isn't quite top drawer. They could go into the team this season, then become more of a squad player should we get someone who is a level up.
My personal opinion is that if we go 4231 it reduces the urgency that we need a CM to some extent. All we'd need Carrick. Fellaini, Fletcher and Clevs to do is get the ball the the 3 ahead of them or the overlapping wingbacks. They wouldn't really need to get forwards too much and the ability of the front 4 (presuming we can get them fit) would ensure we had more possession and take some pressure of the defence and CMs.
I think we'll wait, but I am hoping for an exciting summer.
