Apart from Bentaleb I was happy with the line-up yesterday. If Capoue started he would've made a big difference yesterday IMO.

With Capoue & Dembele behind Eriksen, it wouldn't have been too light weight.

Took Bentaleb a while to get going, but he did try getting us going forward with over ambitious through balls.

Very disappointed with Moussa... How many times did he give the ball away? 5 yard passes going out for throws too

Capoue should have started without doubt, but I hear he has some attitude problems which is why Tim is reluctant to play him.

Unfortunately, this is how lessons are learnt. It's how we go into the next game that makes a good manager.

And as for Sherwood throwing Bentaleb to the wolves yesterday
======================

Hindsight is a good thing but I agree

Tim should have seen it as clearly as the fans did that Bentaleb was outfought and outplayed in the first 10 minutes and should have made the changes then!

Doesn't matter if it's just 10 minutes on the clock, make the changes when it matters!

We should be back to full strength with Vertonghen and Paulhino back so phew...we need them!

We miss Sandro more than Paulinho..

Bentaleb is a good player but he showed against Arsenal that he wasn't ready for big games. Tim showed his inexperience again yesterday.

Agreed and obvious too

A strong midfielder like Paulhino against Fernandinho was needed.
Dembele is too slow and too sideways!
Stick Sandro, and forget about what you think about midfield holder Tim!

this dembele stick is way out of line.

he was our best player up until yaya took him out, and then he spent rest of half limping about, then had to come off injured.

he was up against city midfield on his own, as bentaleb was a deer in headlights, and eriksen siggy and lennon might as well not have been playing.

Bentaleb gives us something technically lacking in the squad. Far from the finished article but We need a collective physicality and work as a unit..Too many of our players couldnt tackle a packet of crips. We are easily manoevrable and technical teams can easily cut through us. Its nothing to do with Bentaleb not good enough its a collective effort that was lacking..
We have lost too many goals against the pasing teams this season..Bentaleb wasnt playing in those games. How many teams would have capitulated like we did yesterday after going down to 10 men.. Even the lower teams have more steel. THAT is what is missing.

right.

so why did we throw bentaleb to the wolves instead of playing a proper dm.

?

Starting Bentaleb vs City was as stupid as starting Lamela vs City.

For professional managers, some people can really get it wrong

Its a collective effort..Watch the better teams..MOST their players can tackle and work as a unit..We leave gaps for teams to play. As I said Bentaleb did not play when we lost 11-0 on aggregate to Liverpool and City before..We NEED a team effort where 11 players are comfortable on the ball and can put in a shift to ensure there are no spaces to play..Its not about having a defensive midfielder. its about having GOOD footballers who can kep the ball and work hard to get it back when you lose it.

Agreed Chronic.

Leaving Capoue out for Bentaleb was a shocking decision imo. Capoue's performance when he came on said it all - very Ade post-AVB. Nabil needs time on loan somewhere to work on his game without the pressure of big games like that.

We'd have lost anyway.. but it'll be interesting to see whether Tim can swallow his pride and pick the better player.

Bentaleb is not to blame for the way we play but he should not be ahead of Sandro , Capoue or Paulinho

agreed.

but why did Sherwood throw bentaleb to the wolves instead of use an actual dm?

capoue is good enough on the ball to win it and recycle it

if you want to play bentaleb then fine. but you have to protect him.

don't think anyone has said he is?

pretty much all of us quite like him

Don't think he has much choice with Sandro and Paulinho back. If he sticks to Bentaleb and puts either of them on the bench I'll be fuming!

hes a dm - what exactly is he suppose to offer when down to 10 men v best side in the league... playmaking ability?

he actually did quite well to be honest.

posted on 30/1/14

I think he was positionally sound and got in the way, as is the role of a pure DM. They tend to go unnoticed unless they're exceptional ie Sandro.

Capoue was one of our better players second half I reckon

Considering he was so quick to return Ade to the lineup I do hope he realises the error of his own ways and puts the team first. Especially with Dembele out..?
