Worth a mention also that the boy is more than capable at anchoring a midfield, having played that much maligned 'holding role' for Freiburg on several occasions.

Yup, I heard that too (the contract thing).

And yes, he actually played a lot last season as a holding midfielder, he's a big lad, but as the Post touches on, he's very much a reader of the game, not unlike his compatriot Mertesacker.

I actually think Arsenal should bust a nut to get the lad. Inevitably Bayern might want a say, like they feel duty-bound to with ALL young German talent.
