Perhaps Real were struggling because of Varane. Real's impressive form seems to have begun with his not being available.

To be perfectly honest If Bartra or I. Martinez got the same protection that Varane got in a Mourinho team, they would also look like world beaters.

I wouldn't say so. It was only really after the game in Valencia that their defensive problems seem to have subsided.

The most commonly accepted opinion is that it's got to do Ancelotti shifting Di Maria to the middle (in place of Isco), as his work rate makes up for the lack of defensive effort the wingers put in.

Is this a serious question? Of course he would. Bayern's CBs are average, Barca have Pique but he hasn't been at his best for a while now, he's far better than Puyol and Mascherano. He'd start for R.Madrid as well, he's better than Pepe.
