Good article.
Does Germany still rely heavily on fan ownership? If so then it somewhat could restrict competition as Bayern just have so many that others may struggle to raise money to compete.
I think the bundesliga is over hyped. Bayern were really slow in their approach the other night. They played the ball sideways and backwards so often. They did not play forward penetrating passes like the premiership teams do. They looked nervous.
I also don't understand why they have no real strikers. If they are the best team in the world then they need world class strikers. Muller is not a striker he is an attacking midfielder/centre forward.
City beat them in Germany and Arsenal and Arsenal drew there. They could only score one goal against a very poor utd team when the big clubs in the premiership have made easy work of them.
are they really that good compared to Barca, Atletico, MAdrid, Liverpool or City?? I think not.
I find myself caught in 2 minds with Bayern - the team i was watching last year was direct and powerful and dominant in a different way.
But then i am having stats thrown in my face about Pep's Bayern and how dominant they are - they did win the league in record time too so hardly easy to argue against.
Personally i think that last years team would beat this current team.
They dominated us that much that the game ended 1-1 and we actually had more shots on target than they had and the two best chances of the night too.
Bored to death of tiki taka. It takes great skill and technique to play it, no question. But it's awfully boring to watch.
I'd rather watch the type of football Fergie had us playing for so long or even the type of football Liverpool (shudder) are playing now.
Bayern's back 5 aren't quite as good as I thought they were either. They were really shaky the other night.
They play Martinez at centre back. He was one of the best midfielders in europe and they putr him in defence
Generally agree with both your statements, so much for tika taka (hate that phrase )
I love the way we are playing at the moment - keeping the ball when its required but really pressing every player for 90 minutes.
Makes for exciting football when mistakes are forced and teams play direct. Each to their own I guess.
The dominating bit can be argued that it was Moyes gameplan to concede possession, concentrating on playing tight & narrow then looking to play on the break.
Perhaps if Moyes has used similar tactics against city and Liverpool they might have made much more of a game of it?

I agree. Play to your strengths. When Rafa won the Champions league with Liverpool we had a poor team. We had to sit deep in most games and hit on the counter attack. We didn't bomb forward at any given chance.
Moyes set out his team against LFC and City like they were the best team in Europe. He left them wide open and exposed.
T Bone - They do need a striker, and my point is that they have been able to sign up their closest rivals best player (Lewandowski (sp)) to cover that.
They have wrapped up the domestic title in record time, and you could argue its because their brand of football and management is superior, but then they did significantly weaken their key rivals squad again last summer by signing Gotze.
Stretford - agree that the football they played last season was more entertaining, even if it was slightly less dominant (only slightly mind).
Paul Powers - I dont think Liverpool, for as well as we are playing right now, are capable of dominating United like that. But then again it may have worked.

I think they overplay it under Pep, Much more direct and ruthless last season.
Shouldn't judge them on Tuesday nights game, United had 8 men in the box most of the game it was like watching a Sam Allerdyce side.

I have to take issue with that point, it's Allardyce
Dominating possession and getting a draw is not dominating the game. I'd go as far as saying Man utd dominated the game first 60 minutes because they were completely fine with Bayern's "safe"possession, it was never a threat and it didn't disrupt their game plan one bit

This is quite possibly the most sensible thing you've ever said
im sure if united didnt sit back so deep bayern might of been more exciting...

If United didn't sit back so deep, we'd have been destroyed.
Has the penny finally dropped for Moyes?
Playing so open against City was tactical suicide
exactly thats my point, they cant be exprcted to smash every team if they are sat so deep against them

Agreed, but there was also a noticeable mentality difference between Tuesday night & against City. I think the players still think we're on City's level and tried to play as such, whereas against Bayern they KNEW they'd have a really hard game, against one of the best teams in the world.
True, Llori, it was a classic example of attack against defence, and I think a draw was a fairly reflection of the game, despite United having the better chances.
It wasn't a "draw" really was it!
0-0 would have been a draw, if the tie had ended at the end of the 90 on Tuesday united would be out on away goals, ergo they lost. They now have to win the tie away from home, from a weaker position than they started the home tie.
Take nothing away from United, i was expecting them to get smashed, which is not nice to see happen to an English team in Europe, but the media coverage has been cringeworthy..
They cannot play like that away from home because they absolutely need 1 goal minimum..
What I find funny is when Mancini first came he played a similiar style of defensive football against the big teams and we were called "Negative" and "Boring" when Moyes (And Fergie v Real Madrid last season) do it, Its "A spirited organised team performance"!!!
It was negative and boring though.
Pellegrini has shown this season what should've been how we played under Mancini given the quality of players he had at his disposal

2-2 or 3-3 draw would see us through actually. We do have to score but we don't necessarily have to win to go through.
I still expect Bayern to go through though. But at least we have a chance, albeit a rather slim one.
Arsenal gave Bayern a much more open game...they still kept possession for the sake of keeping possession.
They're a great team but something's not right this season.
