I think many United fans need to realise the difference between not rating a player as works class to not rating a player at all.
Rooney in my opinion is not world class. He had the potential but never fulfilled it for whatever reason. He didn't. World class players see a team and even a system built around them and getting the best out of them. Messi, Ronaldo, Pirlo, Henry, Zidane, Shevchenko. This talk about him being a great team player. I'm sure he is, but why did Ferguson not build a single team around this player if he was world class? Why was he always accommodating others?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We never built a team around Ronaldo either. Nor Scholes, nor any of our world class players really. SAF had the mentality it is the player's job to fit in with the team, not really the other way around.

I don't really care whether Rooney is world class or not to be honest.

You're probably on the wrong thread then. I mean I don't care either, but it's fun to watch everyone turning blue at the though of their fav player not being awarded this silly accolade.

I do think rooneys potential should have nade him better than he is, maybe just poor managment for him personally
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It isn;t bad management
Rooney became a far more influential player for the team as the expense of some of his individual brilliance
I tell people this time and time again - when you have sprnted 60 yards back to your own area and 8- yards back, your touch is not going to be as good as a player who stayed up front
Suarez and Rooney have diffferent attributes. But I realy could not say one was better than the other. It's far too easy to base it on dribbling skills or goals scored. The season before RVP joined, Rooney hot 34 goals and he wasn't even playing the number 9 positition
Not worth falling out over though. There isn't a real true answer. I'm sure there are teams that are crying out for what Rooney brings and I'm sure there are teams crying out for what Suarez brings.
Sturridge on the other hand has a long way to go yet to reach Rooney's or Suarez's level

Because SAF liked to build teams that were capable of coping and competing despite injuries. Look at the terrible injuries we had in the last few years of SAF's reign. We were still always challenging.

I probably shouldn't have said shíte, I probably should have said Rooney wasn't putting in the performance levels of previous years. He did, however maintain a ridiculously good scoring/assisting record, despite being 'shíte'

No he isn't.
He is however, our best player, and fully deserving of his contract extensions. He's scored over 200 goals for us, and assisted probably 200 more. If you can't give a person like that a record breaking contract, who can you?

It was the same with Judas Persie last season he was the best striker on the planet but now the Utd faithfull thinks your playing better without him

Last season he was fantastic, this season, he has been slightly less fantastic. He does score very important goals, and lots of them. However, as a team, we do perform better without him - we may not necessarily win more without him, but the performance levels are higher.
I agree with him, Rooney has had periods where he's looked world class but also periods where he's looked poor. All in all a very good player for us and certainly a fulfilled career, but he's never been one of those truly special players that come once in a while - like Ronaldo.

Rooney has never been world class in my opinion... a world class player is someone who delivers consistently, and would not look out of place in any team in the world. His first touch, passing, dribbling just aren't good enough at the elite level.
Rooney has always been a good premiership player, nothing more... he has never been near a Drogba at his best, or Suarez from this season, Henry, Ronaldo etc... even Sturridge this season has had a better season than I can ever remember from Rooney.
Yes he gets goals, but he has played in a team which has dominated the league for the last 10 years, so that is a given... but far too many time internationally and at club level his lack of world class ability and meant he has gone missing in the big games, against the great teams.
Depends on what people call "world class" and how exclusive they consider the notion. Any player with Rooney's career consistency is world class for me. The guy WILL end his career breaking Shearer and Man U's scoring records. How is that not world class?
Comparing him to Messi or Ronaldo is odd cos those are all-time greats in history's very top tier of players. Or even comparing him to Suarez whose outrageous form this season probably is as good or better than anyone EVER in the PL era. Not being as good as him doesn't mean you aren't world class.

Wow....
Really?
Lets completely ignore all of the trophies he's won with United, all of the goals, and assists. All of the top quality goals and the amount of times he's virtually single handedly saved games for United.
But not, you're quite right, he's never been as good as Drogba or others Sturridge is having a great season, but I think Rooney's longevity is somewhat clouding people's judgments of his abilities.
