I dont think Wenger wanted to sign someone to do a job for one year and be stuck with him for years after as deadwood. He wanted top quality or none at all. He tried to get someone else in towards the end of the window but failed which is why Bendtner was forced to stay.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
And it's this failure last summer which leaves me feeling the opposite of you: Very unconfined about the summer.
He had three months to get it right and on deadline day we were scrambling to sign Demba Ba. It's pretty pathetic.
*unconfident
I also find it funny that there was an AKB that laughed at someone for suggesting Ba in January when Chelsea signed him, then Wenger tried to sign him
I would agree with that, which is why his signing of Flamini is so baffling. Flamini should have been given a one year contract, not three. He will become deadwood.
It's important for the rest of the season that we do beat Wigan, in order for the team to gain some sort of confidence for the final run-in.
Sunday was an extremely humbling experience.
If we lose to Wigan, we'll finish fifth because of confidence being completely gone.
You can't trust Arsene with signings though and we'd need a good 5+ additions this summer. The thing that worries me most is Wenger's tactical incapabilities the likes of Pochettino, Rodgers, Martinez, Jose are all changing the game in the prem and absolutely ruin us tactically.
I'd trust Wenger to lose big games with Messi as our striker, he's just got it all wrong. No variety in his approach either, Flamini has proved a good stop-gap because we finally have someone who likes to tackle in our midfield yet we got him by coincidence luckily he needed to train then just joined but Wenger never planned for a DM he's a firm believer of winning like Spain but this is the EPL, he's now out of his depth
Yeah I agree. I heard Flamini was only a two year deal not 3. One of Arteta or Flamini have to go this summer preferably Arteta because his legs have gone.
TOO
Worries me also. Before this season our defeats were just because the players were shït, now it's because we're getting out-thought. And not by facking Klopp or Pep but by mid table managers. It's scary.
I'd prefer for them both to leave, and get younger, more forceful players in as replacements.
As you alluded to, Arteta's legs have gone, and Flamini is a shocking ball player, he always was.
And it's this failure last summer which leaves me feeling the opposite of you: Very unconfined about the summer.
------
the fact that we spent 40m on a player, more than City and Chelsea have ever spent makes me confident. Also that the club and Wenger says they will continue to add top players from now on. last summer was difficult because there was a lot of changes going from a selling club to a club with so much to spend, it was like we didn't know what to do with it. The Suarez situation screwed us over as well, we put all our eggs in that basket and he actually did have a release clause anyway.
I'd keep Flamini & Arteta about I don't see how we'd benefit off losing them seeing as we won't make money from them and won't fill up the spaces either, however both must not be regulars in our XI from next year and when all players are fit only 1 of them should make the bench at best
£50m for torres...
And I think tevez was found to be more than ozil's fee.
But I get your point. But still, I'm not convinced anything will change this summer. Your evidence for it being so seems to me more like symptoms of a failed summer rather than proof that we'll learn from it an improve.
TOO
Arteta has one year left on his contract. I think flamini and him are useful to keep, we need depth, but they shouldn't be first choice like they appear to be now.
We'll have to wait and see, we definitely have a sh!tload of money but we need to plan better and get the right players in. anything less than 2 big signings..
My problem with missing out on the top four is it gives the club an excuse not to spend the money needed (the money we have) to make us truly successful again. Face it, that is how Arsenal operate whether fans can stomach it or not.
If we miss out on top 4 but win the cup what will Arsene learn? Nothing. I feel he now has to move on from the club as he's quite clearly lost the dressing room and I never thought I'd say that. In fact despite wanting him to change and being highly critical of our great manager I've always said he's the best man for the Arsenal job. Now it's quite clear he's lost it. I believe however that he'll still be here next season regardless and my real problem with that is he'll likely make the same mistakes again... and again... but I'd love nothing more for him to prove me wrong.
Winning the FA cup will not help remotely long term or for the greater good of Arsenal football club. A one off trophy while still heading in the same tired and.clueless direction while making the same mistakes over and over doesn't exactly fill me with excitement...
ps
I have a real problem with the angle you're now coming from 8bit as you've often sighted the plight of cup winners Birmingham, Pompy and to a lesser extent Wigan when defending Arsene's failure to win silverware but keeping top four.
pps I'd still love for us to win the FA Cup (in case it came across as otherwise), I just don't think 5th and the FA Cup is even close to good enough given the resources, time and stability at the clubs disposal. Therefore long term it's in no way the remedy our failing club needs.
We will finish in the top 4 just like last season when even our own fans were writing us off and we still beat spurs to 4th

We will get top 4 and win the FA cup. Wenger should be given a chance to finish the job with these players. We are close to being the best team in Europe again.
-------------------------
Can you just remind me of when you where the "Best Team in Europe"
Honest question!
This is exactly what makes Wenger a genius, after the disastrous implosion a 4th place finish will now be enough to appease our naive fan base. He has been doing this for years and the fans just keep falling for it.
All one can do is applaud the genius.

Funnily enough we actually may well have been the best team in Europe in the 1930s but certainly haven't been the best at any other time.
Football is all about money. We need to do both. Fourth place trophy is a must for a club like Arsenal at least.
We gone so far now in the FA cup this season, so that would be a huge dissappointment if we fail.
You really find it funny?
And taking poor form and low confidence into ths cup games makes us ripe for beating. Wigan and if we make it past them, whoever we olay in thd final will see us as beatable and play without fear of us.
Correct me if I'm wrong but hasn't this so called obsession with top four stemmed from Wenger and his top four trophy?
