The club has learnt not show they're hand publicly because we'll get shafted money wise.

Although most major transfers, we do hear about months before we sign the player.

Was that actually confirmed or was it just a rumour because of the situation of him being a free agent and Liverpool needing a CB?

Came from James Pearce at the Athletic.

I've seen all the top journos basically come out and say we need at least a short term solution at centre back, and it's negligent to think otherwise.

When they are willing to put their prawn sandwiches at home matches on the line for their opinion, you know it must be a pretty strong one.

Top journos, multiple ex players and the fanbase with the exception of the usual suspects are all on the same hymn sheet.

If we can get a loan deal, I won't mind at all but I would hate for us to buy an oldish player just as a stop gap and then still depend on an injury heavy Gomez & Matip going into next season with the same fundamental problem.

Yeah it has really filtered out the full on FSG arselickers from the rest.

Bascombe and Joyce still going with the "The club feel there isn't anyone of the right quality available" line- full on arselickers

Pearce/Joyce- Usually full on but recognise this is an extreme situation so still need a short term solution, even if it means waiting to the summer for a long term solution.

Maddock- tells it as it is, Klopp being told there's no money for a CB despite specifically requesting it.

It sounds like we have a bigger target for the summer at CB who we obviously don't think we can get in January.

If that's the case then a stop gap is probably the better option.

So what players are available that fit the criteria the club need, which I see as:-

1. A player that is happy to come for five months in the knowledge he’s going to be surplus to requirements.

2. His parent club needs to release this player for five months in the knowledge that we aren’t going to sign that player permanently.

3. This player has to be of a high enough quality to fit straight into the team, there will be no settling in period.

Genuine question.

Stop gap as a loan. Perfect.

Buying someone on a 3/4 year contract just to play half a season and then become 5th choice behind our possible new signing, VDV, Gomez & Matip just doesn't make sense.

Then you still block possible paths for Koumetio and Williams for another year or so when they could easily fill that role.

Yeah I think the elephant in the room needs addressed. Has anybody considered the fact that signing a centre back doesn't solve the actual problem, not the perceived one?

Since VVD got injured, we have conceded 13 in 22 games. Before VVD got injured we conceded 15 in 7 games. However before he got injured we scored 20 goals in 7 games, basically three goals a game. After he got injured we scored 42 in 22 games. Basically two goals a game.

In our last seven games, we've scored 8 goals and four of them were against Villa in the cup.

At the risk of sounding like Hafi, the attack has been extremely wasteful. Not only that but their decision making has been awful. Shooting when they should pass, passing when they should shoot, passing into the keepers arms, which Firmino and Salah have done on numerous occasions the past few months.

Panic buying a defender when we have our first choice centre backs coming back in three or four months isn't going to solve this issue. If buying a centre back, I'd rather wait and get the one we want than buy an average one, who may not be an upgrade on what we have.

For me, I'd try Thiago, in a more advanced role. See if he can get clear chances for the front three and get Firmino in the box for a while, get some confidence back as he's vital to the way we play and has been awful in many games this season.

The bigger target in summer if it is Upmancano has numerous clubs chasing him. Could be another Werner situation where we wanted him until another club offered him a deal he could not turn down.

Upamecano is a nice idea but a non-starter unless we make top four this season. Also, sounds as if Bayern is his first choice anyway.

Seen a few journalists saying "Liverpool are instead planning for a big summer". Pretty pointless unless we in a position to be able to act on that.

Didn't think that was too depressive tbh. I don't think top four is a foregone conclusion unless our form turns around pretty quickly.

Fack me I'd have Mustafi over Williams and Phillips tbh.

A loan deal would be suitable for the club. A short term solution with a view to looking into the longer term issue in the summer. Sokratis wouldn't have sufficed, as he was a free agent and he wouldn't want to go somewhere for 6 months, I reckon he would have wanted his longer term career sorted, which he now has.

Unfortunately I don't know any players who clubs would be willing to let go on loan, but obviously none of us are part of the recruitment team so we wouldn't know, but there doesn't seem any sort of obvious outlook. I think teams would probably only be willing to loan out if the loan had a view to a permanent transfer in the summer, I doubt the club would want that unless it was somebody like Upamecano, but Leipzig won't let him leave on loan anyway.

Unfortunately, it's a bit of a rock and a hard place at the moment.

Your last paragraph sums up why people want a CB though. If Thiago is going to play further forward then ideally you want Fabinho at DM, but he can't play there due to the CB issue.
