A loan deal would be suitable for the club. A short term solution with a view to looking into the longer term issue in the summer. Sokratis wouldn't have sufficed, as he was a free agent and he wouldn't want to go somewhere for 6 months, I reckon he would have wanted his longer term career sorted, which he now has.

Unfortunately I don't know any players who clubs would be willing to let go on loan, but obviously none of us are part of the recruitment team so we wouldn't know, but there doesn't seem any sort of obvious outlook. I think teams would probably only be willing to loan out if the loan had a view to a permanent transfer in the summer, I doubt the club would want that unless it was somebody like Upamecano, but Leipzig won't let him leave on loan anyway.

Unfortunately, it's a bit of a rock and a hard place at the moment.

How much extra do we think we'd need to be paying for whoever we want in summer now?

If that's the difference between CL and no CL then I'd be doing it.

Upamecano is a nice idea but a non-starter unless we make top four this season. Also, sounds as if Bayern is his first choice anyway.

Seen a few journalists saying "Liverpool are instead planning for a big summer". Pretty pointless unless we in a position to be able to act on that.

Good grief, you really have gone full on depressive.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
By what, saying that top four isn't guaranteed?

More a general observation on your posting over the last few months.

You think it’s all about money, as opposed to clubs not being willing to release a player halfway through the season?

I doubt I'd have been "depressive" when we were top of the league little under a month ago, so it's not months, just recent weeks where we've been really poor.

Nor is what I'm saying about top four irregular either. I see a lot of good sides playing better than us currently. It's going to be really competitive. Attracting good players in the summer is dependent on us making it.

We may well recover and have a brilliant second half to the season. Alternatively, we may well not and this period of form could stretch on to a point it's hard to recover. Who knows, equal chance of it going either way for me. There were better performance signs on Sunday, so let's see.

Sorry to have upset you by it though and I'm flattered you are keeping a note of my comments.

Yeah I think the elephant in the room needs addressed. Has anybody considered the fact that signing a centre back doesn't solve the actual problem, not the perceived one?

Since VVD got injured, we have conceded 13 in 22 games. Before VVD got injured we conceded 15 in 7 games. However before he got injured we scored 20 goals in 7 games, basically three goals a game. After he got injured we scored 42 in 22 games. Basically two goals a game.

In our last seven games, we've scored 8 goals and four of them were against Villa in the cup.

At the risk of sounding like Hafi, the attack has been extremely wasteful. Not only that but their decision making has been awful. Shooting when they should pass, passing when they should shoot, passing into the keepers arms, which Firmino and Salah have done on numerous occasions the past few months.

Panic buying a defender when we have our first choice centre backs coming back in three or four months isn't going to solve this issue. If buying a centre back, I'd rather wait and get the one we want than buy an average one, who may not be an upgrade on what we have.

For me, I'd try Thiago, in a more advanced role. See if he can get clear chances for the front three and get Firmino in the box for a while, get some confidence back as he's vital to the way we play and has been awful in many games this season.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Your last paragraph sums up why people want a CB though. If Thiago is going to play further forward then ideally you want Fabinho at DM, but he can't play there due to the CB issue.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Henderson, Milner and Wijnaldum can all do a good job in there.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'd imagine you would have to pay considerably more because nobody wants to lose somebody halfway through a season.

For instance, Upamecano wouldn't be available, but I bet if you offered £60-70m, then maybe they'd let him go as the offer is too good to refuse.

But, as pointed above, clubs aren't willing to let go and if they do, they face a battle to sign a replacement themselves. So it's all well and good saying the club should pay more for the worth of CL football, but the biggest issues is clubs won't be able to pay £70m for players due to the Covid crisis and clubs won't be willing to let them go either.

Pay someone lots of money and they sign regardless of CL being missed for one season (not that I think we'll miss out on it).

I suspect we're waiting on Ben White and our HG quota is right at the edge. Do we not have 17 non HG players on the books at the moment? Seems to be something that no one on here has considered.

Right so we're at the 17 limit. I suppose we could take out VVD and loan in a foreigner. Could even ditch Adrian.

Yeah it seems rare that a keeper loses form and then manages to regain it for some reason. Maybe that's just in my head but the list of goalkeepers who seem to drop off a cliff form wise seems long to me.
