Can't believe Jones is getting all this stick when Henderson was by far the worst player on the pitch yesterday.

Matip was good on the ball but is he getting away with it that his side of the box is getting exposed? Trent and Milner getting the blame but what about the CB?

The CB isn't going to go wide and help out, nor should he. Ultimately it is a price we pay for the formation we play and what we expect from the full backs and asking Salah to stay forward.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Its not really going wide but for example the Brentford game they were crossing to the back post and it was Trent on his own. VVD would never allow a 3 on 1 with Robbo. Yesterday there was so many occasions where if you beat Milner and you are in.

It was not like Milner was getting outnumbered by Foden and Cancelo because Cancelo rarely attacked.

Anyone thinking a 5-2-3 formation could be good? We have 4 very good centre backs, gives Trent even more license to get forward and still can play our narrow front 3! At least gives us something different if the 4-3-3 isn’t working.

Absolutely not to a 5 or 3 at the back. Klopp has tried it about three times ever.

I thought it was a good game, one we could quite easily have won bar a ridiculously good block at the end against exceptional opposition and management.

Yes but that's what happens, you always leave the man at the back because the ball has the furthest to travel. If you start putting defenders towards the back post to cover the players furthest away from the ball, you lose all of your shape, there is far too much space in central areas for the team with the ball to play through and there would be no compactness to the side at all.

It's just a common way to do things, teams always look to defend as compact as possible and that of course leaves you vulnerable to the switch of play. Brentford took full advantage though which is credit to them.

Peps tactic was to overload that side with Grealish dropping in the half space on our right side, Foden stretching the play by staying wide in their first phase build up to create that space between Matip and Milner for inside runs.

In the first 15 minutes they allowed our centre backs on the ball and Grealish had the task to press Fabinho. This gave Matip space dribbling into the midfield. He adapted and pressed our both CBs and Fabinho ended to be the spare man. We missed Thiago in this game who could have broke their press and allowed us to advance more forward without playing the long ball.

I thought our narrow pressing didn't work at all which allowed Silva to create 2v1 with Cancelo against Hendo in their build up phase. I understand he wanted to block the centre and force them wide but selecting Milner wasn't the right choice for this tactic.

I agree his first role is to support VVD if a cross is coming from the right side (our left) but then you have to assess the danger behind you which I think has been lacking last 2 games. He was a little slow to react. Not excusing the lack of midfield cover too but he needed to be better there. It doesnt happen on VVD but then again he is the best at reading the ball.

Yep, just catching up and was thinking this too. That said, Henderson and Fabinho both just looked tired - Hendo was sloppy and Fabinho made a few lazy challenges, including on Jesus for the first goal that you'd think he would normally manage.

Oh well, draw was probably fair against a full strength City side. Also just Salah's post game comments saying we're going for the title, was quite interesting to hear a player saying that so early on in the season

We definitely need to find a way to counter that tactic as it’s potentially cost us four points in two games. I’d be amazed if Klopp doesn’t tweak it for the next game.

In fairness it is usually Henderson who provides that cover down the right side when TAA goes forward but with Milner being more conservative he wasn't necessary in those areas.

It was definitely the midfield who let the defence down yesterday rather than the other way around, they couldn't get a foothold in the game until the second half.

Credit to City, they found a way to get around Fabinho and that's something that most sides struggle to do. Again, it's not often the midfield really struggle unless there are forced changes. Only really Thiago was missing who is obviously a big player in that midfield as he would have got his foot on the ball more.

get the salah contract sorted please

We will see the same in the Watford game. They will try to overload our right hand side and the back post. I dont think Sarr is a good crosser of the ball but Robbo needs to block the crosses. Hopefully Thiago is fit. He can starve off opposition from having the ball.

I have said a few weeks ago playing Trent inside to create overloads in the centre and wide areas gives us the problem of leaving space behind when the opposition breaks away. Milan exploited the space twice when they scored their goals.

I think the inexperience of Jones was showing in the first half which Klopp rectified in the second half. Thiago would have recognised the passing option from the CBs to Fabinho was blocked and would have dropped deep ro create the double pivot to create more passing options.
