The likes of Burnley and Luton’s low blocks have caused us plenty of problems in the past
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yep, and most certainly do care.

One reason I'd go for Gordon to be honest is solely his pace.

Salah isn't as quick as he used to be so it's only really Nunez at the moment who has true pace in our attack, and as much as I like the guy he's not always the best at making use of it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yep, he’s also rarely caught offside, unlike Diaz.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Diaz offside? Isn't that Nunez?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Diaz ranked 6th for offsides last season in the entire league.

Most teams played a low block against Newcastle last season.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Pretty sure United and Arsenal didn't play a low block like they did against us. No one cares about the Luton or Burnley low block. It's the low block against the better sides.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

You’re just making this up as you go along now.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That's hardly a counter argument
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I need to make a counter argument. You said he has no experience of playing against a low block, you’ve then moved the goalposts.

Tbh Kash, you’re just a bit of a liar.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If you think Newcastle low blocks are the same as Liverpool low blocks then you are very deluded.

Like I said, I was thoroughly impressed with his movement last season. If he can turn those runs into assists or shots on goal then we have a real player on our hands.

Imo we're in that phase where Coutinho was rocketing everything into row Z and then the following season it all just clicked. Obviously with Coutinho it's well documented how he spent extra time on the training pitch working on his finishing. I pray it's the same for Diaz

Well, I still really like Diaz. Carries the ball well, retains possession well for a forward and works his nuts off.

He does need to score more though and he's more than capable of doing so imo. I thought last season would be a big one for him in terms of turning his threat into end product. Didn't happen but I'm prepared to cut him a bit of slack given the trauma of having his father kidnapped. Absolutely needs to deliver this year though.

Gordon, I'm not sure I see what others see. I see an above average EPL winger, not a special talent. I do appreciate he scores and assists a fair amount. But I think it's also fair to point out that, along with Isak, he's Newcastle's main point of attack. It makes a difference and I wouldn't expect to see that replicated for us. Bit like Grealish really, he was more productive for Villa than City because he was Villa's focal point.

I certainly wouldn't be focusing on Gordon now. Other areas to work on imo. The deal kind of made sense when it was a £75m p/x with Gomez valued at £35m, simply because that's a good price for Gomez. A £75m straight up deal? I'd pass.

I'd be very happy swapping Diaz for Gordon but it definitely doesn't feel like it should be the priority right now. Must be Diaz wanting a move behind the scenes.

That said, a player who idolises Gerrard and WANTS to come to us is just perfect, and I really do think Gordon's game will keep improving

The only reason I can think of why we're looking at Gordon is because we're looking at his output and thinking we can scale him up even more. We're probably thinking we can get him into better positions more often than Newcastle can...and then we just let him do what he's been doing.

Gakpo will give you that output and you don't need to spend 80m.

There we no alternatives to Tchouameni, or Caicedo apparently, yet another year later we are in for Zubimendi. Really quite pathetic from the club.

Hopefully it's all BS but it's not looking likely that we'll do anything in the window.

To be fair, if we had strengthened in the areas we need to strengthen, I'd have no qualms with a Gordon deal. I think Diaz has far more going for him that numbers and "goal contributions" can really show.

My issue is, this isn't the area of the field we need to be addressing.

Speaking of areas which don't need addressing we are linked again to the Georgian keeper

He can also play striker, which I think will be a factor.

What doesn't make sense to me is we're supposedly close to signing this Georgian GK which is brilliant forward planning for when Ali eventually declines/moves on, but we don't seem to be applying this same logic to other positions.

You'd think we'd be signing a RW in view of Salah leaving in the next year(s) and we still haven't properly replaced Fabinho.

Can’t say I’m too hyped about our CB options either really.

Anyone on here know if we’ve made any other enquiries for a DM? Or if anyone else has bought one?

posted on 14/8/24

Apparently Szob is a slight injury doubt but other than that, we have a FIT FIRST TEAM SQUAD

I honestly have no idea what your angle is here. Our biggest competitors are Arsenal and City and you’re asking why teams with Rice and Rodri aren’t desperate for a CDM?

I’m desperately clinging to the idea that it’s not true but if it is then I find it an incredibly difficult position to understand or agree with.

I’m not someone who rants and raves about signing X or Y or throwing money at problems, but we have a clear need within the team/squad and I simply don’t buy that Zubi was the only improvement available.
