Not a huge fan of play-offs tbh. It's a league and after 46 games I think you should just finish where you finish.

Exactly it does drag on a lot, 2 lots of 2 legged semi's, then a final

The 5th placed team plays at home v 6th placed team in a QF. The winner of that goes away to the 4th placed team in the SF. Put the 3rd placed team in the final straightaway.

In Italy if the team in third finishes nine points clear of everyone else they go up automatically, otherwise it is Play-Offs. Seems fairer.

Plus the team who are third bottom will probably have more wages than the team from the league below.

Not too sure what can change.

Relegation play off!

I'd still make the 3rd in the championship favs tho tbh, the team that finishes 3rd in the PL would have been pretty average all season and be on a low whereas the championship team would be ona high and going all out at wembley.

I'd have fancied Derby to have beat Norwich this season if it was that way

It's a tough one, I like the play-off system in the football league, it adds more excitement to the league season and teams who are mid-table with 5-6 to go still have something to go for.

On the other hand, I wouldn't want a relegation play-off to stay in the Premier League because if you've not been good enough you don't deserve to stay in the league.

This does contradict my statement about the football league though

No!

Relegation playoff between 17th and 18th in the prem!

I think this is a problem that doesn't really exist. The Play-Offs are possibly unfair but there are too many positives about therm to discard them in favour of a new system.

The OP sounds like something straight out of a Rupert Murdoch press release. Anything to sell more games right?

I like the idea of relegation playoffs.

Bottom 2 go down automatically, Next 4 play off against each other except its the losers of each match that go through to the next round. Lose the final and you're in the championship

Play offs may seem unfair for the 3rd placed team, but for 4 teams they have a day out in Wembley and gives a chance to play in PL. I like the Italy rule to be fair.

when the play off started they did it similar to way you propose... play off between the bottom of the PL and top of the Championship.

They changed it so it probably wasnt very successful

Awful idea

I can remember when they used to incorporate a 'relegation' team in the play-offs in the late 80's.

Maybe have PL relegation playoff where bottom 2 are relegated, and the 2 teams above play-off, loser is relegated.

Promotion play-offs in CH would see top 2 promoted, places 3,4,5 in play-offs. 3rd would play 4th for promotion, whilst 5th would play the winning team from PL play-off. Meaning up to 4 teams could be promoted/relegated.

But it means we might finally be able to get rid of Stoke...

If you're doing it purely on fairness, scrap play-offs entirely. No way should a team be promoted which finished lower than a team which isn't.

There's too much luck involved in play-offs. A team may finish in a creditable third in the Championship but be suffering a load of end-of-season injuries.

We have too many games in the calender as is even if it would add another dynamic to the league.

I think the bottom 3 should go down - end of. Shouldn't get another chance to save your season.

As for promotion, I don't think it's fair that finishing 3rd has no advantage over finishing 6th. And having the final at Wembley is just a cash cow for Wembley - the top 2 teams don't get a chance to play at Wembley, so why should teams below them.

I would either have 3rd play 6th, one match, 3rd placed team gets to play at home, same with 4th and 5th, with the final match at the home venue of the team that has finished higher in the league between the 2 winners. The opther option would be 6th has to play at 5th, winner play at 4th and then winner plays at 3rd.

Right now, if you finish 3rd, 4th 5th or 6th, and you are safe for a promotion spot but can't get automatic spot or lose your spot, there's no incentive for end of season games.

I really don't like the playoffs. I think it should be how it was years ago, top 3 go up, bottom 3 go down. No Playoffs at all.

Teams have already had a full season of playoffs to finish in the top 3.

In an ideal world this should be the case, but money / tv rules these days, hence why we have them. Could you imagaine the reaction of the money makers if they decided to scrap the playoffs??!!

Is the playoffs not the most lucrative game in football at the moment? Something like the winner receives £60m over time?

I like this way, it's what they do in the lower leagues

The playoff system is a bit of a joke to be honest. It should just be a simple top 3 go up. OR make a way for it to actually be benefitial to finish third. Something like 6th plays 5th winner plays 4th then winner of that plays 3rd. That way third only plays 1 game, 5th/6th play 3 and 4th plays 2.

Dark the play off final is the most lucrative game in football. Though that's more Sky hyperbole than amything imo. Technically it's true but it's presented in a misleading way. You don't get handed 60 million for winning the one off match. The 60 million is what you stand to earn over the course of the following season should you go up to the PL through tv money etc
