As great and fantastic a player Scholes was, I'm not really liking his new attitude.
Obviously United fans will know him best but to me he always seemed to be an incredibly humble guy, hardly speaking to the media in an antagonising way throughout his illustrious career, but he seems to have a lot to say about United lately, and not much of it is positive. Not sure the United fanbase would appreciate that.

I don't believe what scholes had said has been negative towards united as a club! He has his opinion and had done enough at our club to warrant a voice.
In regards to the OP - each player for me has stripes of their own to be laid into united folklore. If Rooney does go on to break the score records then as a striker he will be regarded as the top dog. As for scholes, I don't think we will ever see a midfield magician like him again.

Scholes may well be right on this one but i don't think i was very productive just before the World Cup.
Then again it may have the opposite effect and make Scholes eat his words.
I don't know what has got into Scholes, i always got the idea he was a mute.

Scholes could be right, it may well be that Rooney has past his best after peaking from 20-27.
will he go the same way as the original Ronaldo and Owen and be shot at 30. Scholes is a football legend and a player that had it all, he knows his stuff.
Sure that Rooney will be out to show that Schoels is wrong (scholes kows about mind games )
Scholes has said nothing but echoed the same sentiments voiced by many United fans about Rooneys form. Imho Rooney had peaked and if he has the drive and the ambition to reach the next level or even reach the level he showed a few seasons back waits to be seen.
When you have a club like Barcelona making you a case study for their young players at La Masia then you reserve the right to hold an opinion like scholes
When he talks, people should listen
I don't see his opinion on Rooney as an attack on Utd, far from it.
As far as I know wazza is not a popular boy, either with the other players or with the back room staff. I think Fergie was right - should have got rid when you could. Be interesting to see how the new man deals with his best paid player.
Rooneys problem imo... is he's a bit thick... and shold have actually read Scholes piece in its entirety rather than the headlines put out by the tabloids.
He may have then seen that 95% of Scholes opinion was hugely complimentary about him... praising his attitude to training, playing and hunger for goals... how he has the ability to drop deeper and play on to his mid 30's.
He never states that Rooney is done, should be dropped etc etc
he states that 'IF' Rooney is struggling the manager should have the balls to leave him out... which should be standard for any player
he also suggests that due to the early start of Rooneys career and the volume of football he's played that we may have seen Rooney at his peak already... which again is a fair comment.
The only real negative he says about Rooney is that while he has the ability to drop deep and play on into his mid 30's, he's not sure he has the discipline... whether he means positionally (as in Rooney at times tries to do everything) or in his fitness/attitude (the smoking, moodiness if things aren't going his way etc)... i'm not sure.
For me Rooney has just followed Stevie Me's lead of a few days previous in jumping on the headlines and going on the defensive... "I've seen a lot of you saying he's coached me and been around the team, but he hasn't." comes across as snappy and childish imo
You guys know you're club better than me, and I guess were it Gerrard retired commenting about the state of affairs at Liverpool were they in a bad position, I would welcome it, fair play lads.
Out of interest, what players do you think would be most suitable/realistic to help out your squad?
You have to also consider the questions Rooney was asked and also the tone of his replies, which you can't tell from text.
If the journo's kept pressing, he more than likely was answering shortly to them and not necessarily a swipe at Scholes. Almost like a "píss off and stop asking me about it".
Then again, as has been said, Scholes has been through the SAF school of man-management and knows his way around reverse psychology.
Really think (or hope) this could be the year Rooney proves himself on the big stage.
Scholes just said what we were all thinking, do we want footballers to be honest or spew the same old clichés time and time again?
If it works out to be a bit of a motivational tool for Wazza, then even better, but don't have a go at Scholes for speaking his mind.

You have to remember that all journalists want is a story, if they can get a reaction then they are happy.
More than likely though, as he knows how to play the game, Wayne probably very calmly answered but when snippets of quotes are taken, and written on a screen, they can look short, snappy and aggressive.
Nothing wrong with what Scholes said.
Nothing wrong with what Rooney said.
That's all.
From what we know, Rooney doesn't read newspapers but does go off on what the headline says, just like 90% of other people who skim the sports pages and rarely read what's going on.
Anyway, Rooney should take this as something to spur him on, but he probably won't. If anything he should probably ignore the press, who build him up and then tear him down. It's been going on since 2004.

Or even more likely, he doesn't read the newspapers or headlines, but just finds out from what journo's are asking/pressing.
I am surprised at all this hate Rooney has been getting at the end of the season.
He had a very good year essentially playing for a mid table team. He scored a fair few goals and got a lot of assists as well. Plus this year he looks fit, fast and strong much better shape than the last few seasons.

Absolutely nothing wrong with what scholes said. It's time someone actually came and out and spoke the truth because there has been enough poosy footing around. This has been one one of our poorest seasons and apart from the keeper every other player has been at fault.
Rooney is past his best and scholes said it like it is.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This
Scholes is entitled to his opinion and from being a team mate is best positioned to give his opinion.
Loz you should have included the bit where he said he is happy to play anywhere as well which is directly contrary to him saying he wants to play as a striker.
Scholes is probably fed up with the little shít just like many fans are

Scholes just said what we were all thinking
--------------------------
some of you perhaps, but not all
In the first half of last season he was playing some of his best football in a while and the players were saying he was fitter than he'd been in 5 years,. His form dipped after his injury mid season.
How many players in the PL can boast about scoring 119 goals in the last 5 seasons?
Not many would be my guess.
Scholes' comments were exaggerated by the press, as were Rooney's responses.
It's a total non story
