I think Welbeck will start

Against Italy we'll need someone who can 'defend from the front' and run and run and run and not let Pirlo have time on the ball. And Forrest does that job better than anyone.

Sterling to come on as a sub against tired legs at 60 mins and run riot.

442 with ageing Gerrard and Henderson in midfield..
That team will get battered by Italy. Play 433 or 442 diamond.

how much more open is that midfield going to be without hendo

Although I don't agree with your team, I don't think it's far from what Roy will go with.

Personally, I would go with something like this;

Hart
Johnson, Cahill, Jagielka, Baines
Henderson, Gerrard, Wilshere
Sturridge, Rooney, Welbeck

Wilshere has been awful lately.

Hart
Johnson Cahill Jagielka Baines
Henderson Gerrard
Sterling Rooney Lallana
Sturridge

Agree - last chance for Rooney. Barkley to replace him if he has a shocker. I think Roy will go Welbeck over Sterling though. I'd also have Ox over Lallana if he was fit.

Totes agree regarding Barkley and Ox over Rooney and Lallana JH.

I'll be disappointed if the youngsters don't all get good game time this World Cup.

We've got no chance so we may as well look to the future and who knows, youthful enthusiasm might see us do OK!

It's Johnson that really worries me....alot.

The whole back 4 worry me but yeah, Johnson's a liability.

I can't believe Ashley Cole was overlooked. Baines has looked shaky in the warm ups. Cole is still very dependable and is still rapid so he should've gone.

Our defensive options are really poor which is why we won't progress too far.

I reckon our best policy in the heat and humidity is to hit teams on the break which is why i'd include the likes of Sterling, Barkley and Ox as well as Sturridge. No defence would want that lot running at them!

I would have taken and started Cole. This one still baffles me.

Baines looks like a fish out of water for the national side.

Just thinking ahead. Dependent on form and the emergence of more talent, this lot could well form a seriously strong side for the next world cup, if not the next Euros:

Hart
Walker Jones Smalling Shaw
Henderson
Oxlade-Chamberlain Barkley Sterling
Walcott Sturridge

Sure Jones and Smalling have struggled of late but they're still young and have the potential if they get plenty of first team football!

Given that Pirlo usually sits just in front of the back four I think Barkley has to sit this one out.

He does give up his fair share of possession and Pirlo would be allowed to fill his boots. We need Rooney central as he's likely to negate Pirlo.

I can only imagine he wasn't told to 'do a job' on Pirlo that day. Barkley weakness is that he gives away possession too easily. Against Pirlo that could be suicidal!

I'd rather play with no fear than to pick a team purely based on negating a 35-year-old who plays at walking pace.

we parked the bus and let Pirlo walk around uncontested

Rooney wasn't marking him

the tactics were create 'Roy's wall' and keep them from getting inside our 18 yard box, otherwise Italy could have the rest of the pitch.

disgusting to watch but in fairness the tactics worked. they didn't score.

Rooney was told to 'do a job' but he wasnt able to do it because Pirlo moved around too much and Rooney got tired out chasing him all over the field.

did you even watch that game?

Oh yeah. Pirlo, the player famed for his great 'engine' and athleticism. Did you watch the game?

I'd agree if this was a must win game but I see it as a must not lose game.

I reckon this is our toughest group game. A draw against Italy puts us in a strong position especially given that we've got Costa Rica last!
