If we really want to compete we have to invest in the depths of the team even if that means that someone of Kos, Vermaelen's format have to take place on the bench. That is how to win the League.

The problem is he's definitely a good enough 3rd choice CB. If we sell him for what would not be a particular great amount of money (around £10m probably), it becomes yet another player we have to get this summer, added to the RB, CF, GK, other back up CB, DM and probably wide attacker we need to get, though that slot may be filled by Campbell or a CF capable of playing wide. Given Wenger's unwillingness to make many signing, and the fact he said he only wanted to bring in 2-3 players, another sale just feels like creating a gap in the squad that won't be filled.
That said, nothing has happened yet and Wenger said he wanted to keep Vermaelen recently and we don't need to sell, so he may well stay.
The issue isn't Vermaelen leaving to a mid table outfit, the problem is do we have faith in Wenger to replace him, replace Sagna, sign a decent striker, sign a defensive mid, sign a backup goalkeeper?
Difference to other seasons is we already have most players who can play those positions fine we just need back ups

if Verm goes, we probably need to sign 7 players, and there isn't even the slightest chance we will do that.
Back up players are easy to find
We always knew that Verm was likely to leave, what's all the hysteria. My issue is him going to Man Utd
I have consistently said that TV is a better all round defender than Kos. Most of the calamities have been when TV was closest to the ball and rightly went for it but Kos came charging in to try to take the ball before he did. TV needs a similar player to himself alongside him and he can be a great defender. I think if he is used to his strengths at Man U he will be a big asset for them.
With Arsenal Kos attacks the ball and Mert mops up the spillages behind him, so they work very well as a partnership, most of the time. Its almost one CB in front of the other. Thinking about it, that is also a contributing factor to the big loses as its easier to carve apart. Its also more difficult to put another player in to replace one if they are injured as you need to match the partnership, so need a spare player of each type. TV was on to a hiding to nothing at Arsenal and could surprise a few.
All that being said though, I think Vermaelen will stay. Always thought it would be one of, not both, Sagna / Vermaelen to leave.

Sagna's gone now and he could have filled in there if we were desperate...... But to not be worried about us selling a squad player then you have no idea about football. Its a squad game and with our injury track record - its suicide. Unless Wenger has a player of better quality lined up to come to the club then what is the facking point of selling.

and another thing to back this up. When Mert was brought in, TV was first choice with Mert because he is the better all round defender. He then got injured and we saw that Kos and Mert worked better as a pair.
You can see things like that in other areas as well. For example, when I used to play tennis with a certain group of mates, one would hammer the rest of us at singles, then me and another were fairly close (but I of course think I was better) and the other came in 4th. We generally used to play with me and the guy in 4th at doubles. We worked as a team and were virtually unbeaten amongst our mates and others we played against. Individually not as good, in the right pair facking good. The point being the best player does not always make the best partnership with the wrong pairing.
