No it wouldn't stop everyone calling for SOD's head (some have deeper desire for him to go than our current bad form) but it would shut a few up. I sat at Pride Park today and had to smile at their collective fan base singing the praises of Nigel Clough, same fans were probably shouting Clough out last season and if he has a few bad results will do the same again

Fickle business this footy lark!

He hasn't list the players. Most have only been with him for 5 minutes (9 new in the closed season + 2 loans last week).

New side that is coming together. Three key players lost in the first two games hasn't helped much. But after all that, excepting today, we've not played bad!

We'll get it together this season. We'll stay up, probably not much more. But that will do

Fuzzy

That 'too much information' about Jewell has made me laugh and feel like vomiting at the same time!

I agree we were rubbish, I don't think there's any great conspiracy on that, too many players didn't turn up, too much expectation on the new kids, one or two trying too hard and the rest to scared to try

I had a chap behind me who spent 89 minutes hurling verbal abuse at any of the players whose names he knew (mainly Woods and Oster) then on 90 minutes decided he couldn't blame the players, blamed SOD and questioned their lack of confidence!

Fuzzy, Lalkovic only trained with us for the first time yesterday. He seems to have a bit of strength for his size

Woods worried me today again mainly in that he didnt want to decide what to do with the ball, he wanted to pass it to Friend who was clearly wanting him to choose a different option at times

I'm not a fan of this zonal marking either

fuzzy, lets not get into this we play great football debate?the results dont lie,in there first three derby by there own standards where crap but still ground out results, dont you see thats the road we need to go down. we need players and staff who will die for our club but sadly i dont see this crop of players doing that bar a couple

Think back to what it was like under penny, ten times better than its ever been under sod! That team had fight, quality and real character, all we have under sod is 'well we played well, did the basics well, but we lost again' ......sod off!!

A "go back to Penney" call

I fully respect the guy for doing what had to be done at the time. But for a club at the level we were at, we had a lot of investment. Look at what DP did after the Rovers. I'm afraid it says it all

Our current situation is totally different. We have few funds compared to our competitors. Our manager is a specialist at that type of management having learned how to do it with Biurnemouth before us.

Do results lie? Yes, quite often actually. Between September and December 2008, they lied pretty much all the time. SOD got us through that. This, for me is not as difficult as the players are there. They are just injured. 2008/09 was a miracle. One team has avoided relegation after being bottom at Christmas in the last 10 years. We are they.

SOD has earned a whole lot of time. Particularly when the team is generally playing well.

penny moved us up 60 places in 5 years, sod has moved us up 8 in the same time! Yep sod is the man!! Plus dont forget we were doing ok under penny when ryan decided to move penny out, nothing to do with footballing reasons by the way!!

Great achievement by Penney and I fully respect him for it. But we did that as the rich kids on the block.

But you conveniently ignore a move to the Championship in your argument. The presence of ex-premier league clubs and parachute payments make it a whole different ball game financially.

60 places. Fantastic achievement. Is that what SOD has to do to get your respect? Yeah we should have kept Penney. Man U would be pooing themselves by now!

And he'd only have to move us up 44 places to do it!

Sorry but if people are going to sing the praises of past managers/want them back at least spell their name right! Its like saying 'Billy Sharpe'

Penney was good for us, his record after he left suggests he'd peaked.

I can understand the wanting Mark Robins but this one leaves me confused

Hold on girl, When did i say I wanted penneeeeeeey back? Im just saying theres nothing saying dave wouldnt of done the same as what sods done? we were in 8th spot and well on are way again to the playoffs when he was sacked! Sod came in and took us backwards that season, and it was common knowledge at the time if we had lost to Mansfield he would of been sacked! So lets get it straight, sod is no miracal worker, even under penny we could of got to where we are now, maybe even earlier!

Penney left on 30 August 2006 with Rovers sitting in 20th position of league 1

The reason was that he was not able to provide the club with it's objective of promotion to the championship. In his two completed seasons in league 1 Rovers finished 10th and then 8th. The start of 2006/07 was poor (20th after 5 games) and as at that time Rovers were in a league where we could compete financially, JR moved and let him go.

SOD's first part season led to our finishing 11th but we won the JPT. We then finished 3rd in 2007/08 and were of course promoted via the play-offs.

The next 3 season in championship had us finishing 14th, 12th and 21st. So last season was the first season SOD had where our league position deteriorated.

To say SOD improved our league position 7 places from Penney is a gross and naive understatement of his achievements. Two mid-table finishes in a league where 14 teams in the league pay twice the wages we pay or more is nothing short of a minor miracle.

Well I guess it's human nature to look for a change when things aren't going well (in many aspects of life). But I think the reality is that staying in the Championship, given the great financial disparity, is always going to be an achievement in itself.

Maybe we could get a different manager - say someone with the Tony Pulis approach to football for example - but I think the overriding factor will always be money and I just can't see anyone doing any better than SOD has, given our resources.

It's early days, we've got a lot of quality players to return from injury. I'm going to be optimistic and say we will turn it around.

Completely OT but I'd lovel to see the IP addresses of some of the posters on here. Same thoughts, same style of saying it, think we could have one person with several accounts

Anyway better things to do today.

Fuzzy, the Paul Jewel pants down story is a few years old.I think the reason for the Ipswich result is that they are just pants.

posted on 21/8/11

I'd never heard it. I stand corrected. They are probably just struggling to understand the footballing brain that is Paul Jewell

I have not been calling for SOD's head but I can understand the frustration - I know that his options are limited but a manager with a little nous would have changed tactics to try and salvage a point against Forest not use subs in the 88th and 89th minutes. Yesterday Rees Brown apparently had no idea where he was supposed to be playing (Rovers World Commentator) and was either a 2nd right back or nowhere in paticular, Milan (our new striker) drifted into midfield and Barnes went up front and Bennet was promoted to the Robbie Keane position of warming his backside on the substitutes bench. The only obvios tactics I can see s only play 1 striker and bring on an extra defender if we are losing. I am afraid I never rated Wes Brown so I don't see his brother as being the top signing we missed out on from Manchester United. We need to buy or bring in a non - contracted striker not rely on giving other teams youth players experience. Sheff Utd filled their team with loanees last season - remember what happened to them

Actually fuzzy we were in 14th place, so ill meet you in the middle of your 20th and my 8th. He left on the 30th aug 2006!! Still the facts are facts, if we dont make a change now we will be that far adrift when sharpe comes back its not going to matter! Sod has done us proud, but I feel and maybe he does, its time for a change, crowds are dropping, people are losing faith, mr ryan will have to do something when its starts hitting him the pocket, we need a new injection and that means a new boss!!

Meath. Both players had done one training session each. In SOD's interview, he said that bringing both of them in wasn't ideal, but he thought that Rovers had played well enough on Thursday for them to come in and give something. But then he gets a performance like that.

You also hear something of that niche market that we're working on. They're 18 and 19 years old and haven't yet played league football. No top championship club will risk giving such players that sort of experience. Donny will. And so we will find a JET, a Jason Shackell, a Ryan Mason, a Jordan Mutch every now and then.

northoftheborder - I was wrong due to poorly labelled links on the site I use.

http://stats.football365.com/2007/ENG/D2/toaug.html

Thats the table as Penney left the club. 16th place.

I think you've seen that I'll stick to my guns on this. I will remain stuck to them even if we do get relegated simply because, as I've explained, the league position, although important, is not the most important issue due to what we are trying to do.

If we lose tuesday, then lose to bristol at home I think hes a gonna, surely even mr Ryan can only take so much! We cant just sit here waiting for players to come back expecting everything to change, but thats not certain! The main problem is for every player we get back we lose 2 more, and that no coincidence, its sods style that is the problem, the big physical teams just resort to crocking are lads because they know its the best way to beat us, and this will just continue now while hes incharge, can knowbody else see this?? The game is up, we need to change are manager, change are style, change the whole attitute of this club now and we might, just might be able to get out of this mess, if not this will just continue ending in us going back down!!
