Good luck to him, he was never United quality but he's done well considering he was playing in a homeless tournament not that long ago and has now been signed by the biggest club in Portugal.

Another player sold at a huge loss. We never fail. He actially had a very good season in Portugal last year. If a Benfica forward had had a similar season, he would nit have been sold for that price

Merry

I reckon Bebe would have done better for Portugal than that donkey Eder.

I don't doubt that VC. He wasn't good enough for United but has shown himself to be a good Portuguese League forward. His confidence would have been high and he'dsurely have performed better than most of the Portuguese World Cup squad

I know he was not wanted by Manchester United but his record on loan speaks for itself.

Selling him for £2.5m is a joke but then again when have we exactly been great at selling footballers...

Good business for benfica... 20 mill from Liverpool for Lazar Markovic, and replace him with arguably a better player for a fraction of the cost.

There's a theme there VC and that's Real Madrid, they overpay for everyone

posted on 25/7/14

phoenix is right though, we do tend to let some of our players go on the cheap.

posted on 25/7/14

Well I suppose we get the best deal that any team is willing to pay, I doubt very much we reject higher bids for our players to sell them to someone else, players are only worth what someone is willing to pay for them

posted on 25/7/14

True Patrice. Which is why you attempt to negotiate a higher price out of any team who is interested. Or at least you should. We don't

Beckham, RVN,

Both went on the cheap.

Beckham should of fetched 40m for marketability alone.

posted on 25/7/14

Maybe we do try but nobody wants to pay the price, I'd rather sell a player we don't want for half of what he's worth than keep him in the squad while he costs us money

posted on 25/7/14

You could negotiate and possibly get a higher price. We clearly don't and just get them off the wage bill asap for token fees (basically the formula you suggest). Sadly that attitude costs the club millions

posted on 25/7/14

Well it does and it doesn't, it gains us millions by getting players off the wage bill

Probably, but as a player I don't think there were many more around at that time that cost more than 25 odd million.

We could have got at the very least another couple of million for Bebe. I doubt if his wages over the remainder of his contract would even add up to that. And if our policy of getting shot of a player at any price is the right way to go, why do we seem to be the only club to do it? If we were in Liverpool's situation with BorinI we would have let him go for 4 or 5 million

posted on 25/7/14

We only tend to sell players who are performing poorly/coming to the end of their career and therefore have a low market value. (excluding DB as mentioned.)
Coupled with us paying them expensive contracts it means that we have to sacrifice a higher transfer if a club are to be able to afford the deal/ proceed to purchase.

Also 2.5 million is around right for this guy, there was never a hope in hell we were going to get near what we paid for him considering how ridiculously overpriced he was

I disagree. He was the top scoring Portuguese player on their league. How much do you think he'd have cost us to buy him from Benfica if he'd just done that for them?

posted on 25/7/14

Sorry but 2.5 million was not about right for a guy of his age on his wages, given how well he did on loan. 6 or 7 million would have been about right

posted on 25/7/14

If there was competition for his signature then perhaps the price would be higher but evidently there was not.

Also worth mentioning that his wages would have been very high in comparison to what the majority of Portuguese league players get, not everyone is on PL wages

I just heard the sad news

£2.5 million????!!!

Why do we always undervalue the selling fees for our great players?
