I really don;t see that as being a bad defensive squad.....

That's because you're living in cloud cookoo land. We stuggled defensively the last couple of seasons whenever Rio and Vidic weren't at their best because of age or injury, why you see this changing is mind boggling.

we have tolerated mediocrity for too long, and the worst part is we pay over the top for mediocrity when with a little more effort or cash we could get top class talent
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You do realise Mudd was joking right?
£16m + Nani for a "back-up" defender
Even for our first choice defenders we wouldn't get £16m.
This is the reason we are in a mess:
Replacing the likes of Scholes, Ronaldo, Giggs, Rio, Vidic, Keane with the likes of Young, Valencia, Jones, Carrick, Fellaini ect.
Buying more squad players is the new road to ruin, not debt.
I think we need to sign a topclass CB in this window for this season. This season is too critical to the club and lose out on CL, it could be costly. We will need a topclass CB if want to get to CL IMO.
I think Smalling and Jones will be top class CBs, smalling is already topclass. Jones is not quite there yet, he is still 22. he has plenty of time to develop. There is no need to push him on from the deep end this early.
We need a topclass CB to partner Smalling if we want to get top 4 IMO. that is why I dont want Rojo, If he is going to be our only CB signing
Thanks mudd

I seriously still would not say no to another top class CB a CM and a Winger
-----------------------------------
I'd rather us spend a huge sum on a CM, and let Jones and Smalling prove their worth (or lack of) along side Evans and Rojo (with Blackett and Keane as backup).
There is a huge lack of world class CBs, so it is a position we should just try to trust our own. We wont get Hummels and Benatia is not gaurnteed to step up to PL.
CBs: Jones, Smalling, Evans, Rojo, Blackett, Keane
Left side: Shaw, Rojo, Young
Right side: Rafael, Young, Valencia
I really don;t see that as being a bad defensive squad..... Far rather cash spent on Carvalho, Khedira or the holy grail
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Ji
As could be seen at the weekend, a few injuries and our defence suddenly becomes very inexperienced.
In truth
We have
1 experienced RB who is injured alot
3 experienced CBs who are injured a fair bit too
1 reasonably experience LB who is laready out for a month or so and is apparently a little heavy
Not enough for me, particularly if we are playing 352

Oh fúck off. Just because I have a different view as you, you roll out that classic. What a twát.
Firstly, I don't think we were amazing WITH Rio or Vidic, last season... So that asks a bigger question about the squad, manager, tactics etc
Secondly, Jones and Smalling have NEVER had a prolonged run at CB. So giving up on them without even trying them properly seems stupid.
Thirdly, they were constantly moved to RB, which led to various injury problems that would be less prevalent in the CB role. With wingbacks, those days should be numbered.

If United sign a topclass CB within next couple of weeks, Ill take back everything I said today
Macca, contrary to what a lot of people believe, I am dead serious about the pre-contractual agreements.

I agree, so why spend £16m on a back up defender?
Why not go and buy a proven PL defender for similar or less?
Many questions Chelsea signing Cahill, look how he has done.

we make the same mistakes over and over again never learning, einstein defines this as madeness.
We do not need anymore decent signings we have a squad full of that already. We need top class signings that will not only come in an do a job but lift the quality of the players around them.

I am as big a fan as any1 on here of our current center back options but how does bringing in a mediocre cb help their development.
Why not go and buy a proven PL defender for similar or less?

Exactly, if we do not change the clubs transfer policy, and quickly, we will be Liverpool of the 90's.
LVG said he only wants to improve his first XI, if Rojo is any improvement at all it will be minuscule so I really don't understand the signing. £16m can get you a very good player, Lovren for example. PL proven, a good age, cool head and exactly the type of cb we need.
Why not go and buy a proven PL defender for similar or less?

We did, Vermalean.
Everyone cried a river.
I suggested Shawcross... Everyone cried a river.
Others suggested the Swansea lad... Everyone cried a river.
Unless it is Hummels or Benatia, no one has any time for dicussion.

The likes of Haangaland, Lovren, WIlliams would all be good squad players. They all have the experience and leadership so desperately lack too.
I personally do not want Hummels or Benatia. I think both will be exposed in the prem rather easily

As I said, Lovren would have walked into our first 11, Williams would bring some much needed leadership at around £10m. There are options there.
If not, go and buy somebody like Rojo, just not for fecking £16m.
