If we play a formation that puts players in their best positions, then we should make top 4 comfortably. Injuries are the biggest threat in my view. We're still an injury or two from being weak in CM and CB.
I guess it's not essential but I'd be worried if we didn't, we ideally need to get back ASAP. But what is of more importance is the long term future of the club and if missing out this season for the sake of our team rebuilding and taking time to understand LVG's philosophy then so be it.
Whether we make the top 4 or not this summer I don't think anyone expects us to splash out as much next summer as we have just done. We've made some major rebuilding work over the past few weeks and it is inevitable that it will take time to gel.
The long term plan is more important than next season.
Why are you putting pressure on LvG Robb?
can LvG afford not to get top 4 this season?
-
He can. The club can't.
We will lose £60m CL money and £250m from the Adidas money.

The guy is paid millions to manage United and just spent £170 million and also brought in Falcao.
I'd say it was fair to expect a top 4 finish. If he doesn't he really should be under some pressure.

No won't bud, Adidas deal starts next year and we have 1 year from them to get in. So we have two seasons from now. Also, Woodward has come out and said we can afford 2 seasons out, but no more
He' French
That's not true, we lose full Adidas sponsorship if we miss consecutive CL while they are our sponsor, this season doesn't count.
If we miss the season after that as well then we will lose something like £25-30m from our annual Adidas sponsor.

Top four really isn't going to be as easy as some of you seem to think.
All of this isn't going to click straight away.

4-4-2 with these top players who actually know how to play the system and we'll be top 4 easy.
If LvG plays 3-5-2 with the players learning the system then he'll be evening up the playing field.
I might be wrong about £170 million.
Herrera - £30 million
Shaw - £30 million
Di Maria - £60 million
Rojo - £17 million plus £4 million Nani wages
Blind - £14 million
Falcao - £12 million loan fee.
You'd imagine two years with no CL football would impact financially, especially with the money spent this summer.

Woodward said back in May that we can afford two years out.
We need to get back in the top 4
That's why I'd be playing a system the players are used to, with the additional players in the squad, top 4 shouldn't be a massive problem
If we persist with formations and tactics that we are clearly struggling with for much longer, and the results don't change, top4 will be gone before we even get going.
Our season starts a week on Sunday
VC is right, we still have a real battle on our hands here. There are some very good teams in the PL now and not just the likes of City, LFC, Arsenal etc. Some of the smaller teams have done some really good business in recent windows. Whilst the top teams may not be as strong in comparison to the top German and Spanish teams as previous years, the overall strength of the league has improved. So we don't have many easy games whilst the team is gelling. Going to be a tough ride.

Is what I have seen in the more reliable papers
Don't get me wrong, top 4 is as hard as ever to get into and nowhere did I say LvG should be fired if he doesn't make it.
But he should be under a lot of pressure to get top 4 with that outlay.
I still don't expect us to get Top 4, such as the quality above us and the state we are currently in.
In fact, if we don't get 6 points from our next 3 games, I'd be surprised if we make Top 4.
