World Cup Boycott

I work for an American TV company and the government sanctions are killing us at the moment. A lot of Western things are being banned and shut down. They're a long way from welcoming anything Western.

---------------------------------------------

The same goes for the effect of Western sanctions on Russia. Collectively, the West's trade with Russia is a much bigger part of their pie than ours.

But I don't think you'd suggest that Russians walking around in England or France would encounter terrifying general hostility.

This is above all a geopolitical tussle. It isn't a clash of civilisations and the vast majority of people, even when they have been convinced to agree with their government's stance, have the good sense not to hate individuals with whom they come face to face just because of their nationality.

OP England, have effectively boycotted the world cup for 20 odd years now, and it hasn't made much difference.

I wasn't linking the beheading in London to what is going on in the middle east by the way, merely stating that shocking incidents can happen anywhere.

Depends on the situation closer to the time for me. If it's the same as now, I wouldn't boycott.

What kind of things are being banned? And are you suggesting they have been banned in America or the UK, and by the American or British government?

Ahhhhh, that makes sense, and it's a good idea.

I thought Russia had sanctions on the amount they can export now anyway?

I thought you meant the UK and American governments stopped commercials for Russian exports, which basically equates to a load of metal and oil

Who cares what the Russians are doing within their own country, let them look after themselves. The issue is that they keep taking the territory of their neighbouring countries.

I do in this case
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So you provide Russian TV with British commercials?

No, not British commercials. Essentially, all channels on pay tv in Russia are foreign so they've just stopped all commercials (revenue) on pay tv knowing that it is only going to affect foreign companies. The commercials and who they belong to aren't really the issue, just who they generate money for.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Surely Russian companies are going to miss out on a lot of advertising money?

Either way, I couldn't care less. If Russian continue then all imports and exports will eventually be sanctioned.

I never said that westerners wouldn't be safe walking around etc. I said that the western world is a long way off being welcomed at the moment.

-----------------------------------------

Okay but when we talk about Russia being welcoming or hostile we need to make a distinction between the regulatory climate vis-a-vis business and how ordinary Russian treat ordinary people visiting the country. If there is a trade war going on, it doesn't mean you'll see obnoxious behaviour on the streets.

We should lead the boycott, then at the last minute do a u-turn and go.
Reckon we could get a semi final place if we can convince Germany, Spain, France, Netherlands, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, USA, Belgium and South Korea all to pull out.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Bet we'd still find a way to feckin lose!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yep. We'd go out in the second round to Morocco, "If only we had their technical ability and were able to keep possession!" *shakes fist*

Correct, obnoxiousness wouldn't be an issue anyway. More so violence. I saw a lot of obnoxiousness myself whilst visiting Moscow, although as you say that's just their society, even kids looks like robots.

I don't think the place will make for a great World Cup, regardless of the politics involved.

The real issue comes when it isn't only an industrial war, if Russia continue to invade their neighbours the world has to do something, eventually.

We are fresh from illegally invading two middle-eastern countries, I don't think we should be pointing any fingers

Yeah because what we did to Iraq and Afgan are so very similar to what Russia have done to Ukraime, Georgia ect

It's the West that are mainly in the wrong. After the USSR was dissolved the West promised to stay away from the Russian borders and leave Ukraine out of it but over the past 10 or so years NATO had been inching closer to the Russian borders and from a Russian perspective it would look like Ukraine might join NATO.

Now of course the Russians are far from innocent but if the US and friends stayed away from the Ukraine a lot of this wouldn't be happening.

How is it NATO's fault that Russia are invading Ukraine, and have already done so to Georgia?

If the Iraq war was so illegal, then UN resolution 1483 would seem rather peculiar

Your right.

We killed and over million people and stole their oil.... not to mention using depleted uranium tipped missiles that are causing a number of birth deformaties.

Go do some research! The West have been inching closer to the Russian border for years.
