Wow long article. Tbh I think most grounds get undue flack for their atmosphere. The second half of last year and the league games at the bridge this year have all been pretty lively and atmosphere has been very good.
spurs 2 - 1 arsenal when danny rose scored THAT goal was absolutely unreal.
we had just lost the fa cup semi to Portsmouth, a then key player (palacios) was suspended, and we looked dead and buried for the season and our chase for 4th, and that early goal changed everything and the atmosphere was unbelievable.
probably the best home atmosphere I have been in.
best away atmosphere could have been city 3 - 2 spurs when city scored the late winner pen.
atmosphere in the spurs end as we fought from 2-0 down back to 2-2 was unreal.
had we won that game I think we would have gone joint top with city in January.
The European game against Bruges in 1995 was another day when the atmosphere was different from usual. The top tier of the Matthew Harding Stand was actually shaking.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
I was in the temporary seating in the Shed end, pishing down with rain but the atmosphere was phenomena - the chants about being French and the tackle by Erland (should of seen a red) just topped the game off.
Best atmoshphere was the 5-0 win against Leeds in 83/84 I was 8 years old, why my mum allowed me to go I'll never know. it opened my eyes and gave me the passion to be Chelsea till i die. As an adult I'd probably say Vienna Memphis away in the Cup Winners Cup. after stuck on a coach for the best part of 26 hours - the atmosphere in the ground was outstanding.
Anyone go to 'Hell' when we twotted them 0-5?
Wasn't at that one Cesc, but looking at it on telly it looked awesome, but then again they always are.
El classico a couple of seasons will be hard to match for atmosphere - it was semi final of the spanish Cup and first leg was tied 1-1, all to player for. Messi and Ronaldo both on display. Real ended up winning 3-1 i think.
Other than that, Croatia 2-0England was amazing for the euro qualifiers 6/7 years back

I also went to Vienna that day on a coach. I remember it took about 2-3 days to get there.
Summer 1969 - we're about the same vintage and I have to agree about atmosphere's in grounds not being the same these days. Also would agree with most of the Chelsea games you mention. I did get in at WHL in '75 for that relegation decider, very scary when we realised coming up to kick off there weren't going to be many of us inside! , and the noise in the Shed at half time for that FA Cup match in '82 was unbelievable.
I'll throw 2 more matches in : 1971 ECWC quarter final against Bruges at the Bridge, we were 2-0 down from the first leg (Ossie's first game back from a long ban if I remember rightly) and we left it until about 6 mins from the end to square it at 2-2, extra time was epic as we ended up 4-0 winners.
An away match, the 1-1 draw at Highbury in 1984 our first game back up in the first division, there were about 20,000 Chelsea there!

That must of been a good night...With Fener and Besiktas in downtown Instanbul.
Shedfrom66, do you remember at half time in '82 the amount of people in the Shed sitting on other people's shoulders. I have never seen that amount in the Shed at any other time. Hounslow's Finest who is a keen Spurs fan admitted that it looked brilliant from the North Stand that day.
The Bruges game in 71 is another game that I have also heard was awesome, but being young I had School the next day and couldn't go.

I seem to remember the boat on the way back was just as good as Johnny Spencers goal - Utd had been drubbed by Barca 4 or 5 nil the boat was rocking. was my first Euro away game... but yes was a trk and a half. Police and Army escorts all the way there...
My dad always says the best ever atmosphere at Goodison was when we beat Bayern Munich 3-1 in the cup winners cup semi final 1985

Agreed with Chronic, was at that game against Arsenal and it was absolutely jumping from the first minute to the last. Incredible scenes.
Also the last half an hour against City when we won 3-1 under AVB was incredible, an awful lot of frustration came out
Best away fans I've seen at the Lane were PAOK, by a distance.
OP Good article, the best atmosphere`s where being at Spurs early 60s European games, the atmosphere was incredible. The game in April 1975 that you mentioned at WHL had an horrible atmosphere, I was in the ground, but well away from any trouble. The neandrathals from both sides were in their element.
For Arsenal the first 5 minutes of the Man Utd CL semi final was a complete frenzy. By 15 mins the atmosphere was completely flat of course it was so surreal.
The best atmosphere I have experienced in sport was the final day of the London olympics at the Velodrome. When Chris Hoy won Britain's last gold of the day I couldn't even hear myself screaming.
Summer, what I most remember is being flung about yards at a time as the crowd surged whilst singing we were 'gonna win the cup' Some hopes as Hoddle and Hazard turned it on in the second half. Pains me to say it but they were good side at that time.
Best atmosphere? Definitely earths, it allows me to breath
Shed, they were very good at the time and we were very ordinary. Looking back, I have to laugh that at half time we were actually thinking (more like hoping) that we might win.

No problems.
One that sticks out was being in the Park End for the 4-4 replay with Everton.
The atmosphere in that second half especially was unforgettable. We kept taking the lead & they kept pegging us back. Bizarre game, bizarre defending & a mad night.
Wont forget Beardsley's screamer neither & then the following season I think, him banging in a winner at the same end for the bluenoses
There's been a few down the years, the 3-3 with Utd at Anfield in 94 was one of the real last great nights at our place in a league fixture.
Razor's header at the Annie Rd end, bang! A high point in a season of many lows.
