The Best Atmosphere You Ever Experienced?

As a Dundee United supporting Scotsman, can I just say that's a great article. Sadly football is far too sanitised these days but you can still get great atmospheres now and then.

In my own experience as a 33 year old, one of the best days was a play off match vs Partick Thistle at Tannadice with the score from the first leg at 1-1. They scored a penalty and with 2 minutes to play we were staying in the 1st division. Brian Welsh equalised and I've never known an outpouring of emotion like it. Owen Coyle scored the inevitable winner in extra time to send us back up.

The national team I was fortunate enough to be at both games vs France a few years ago. When Gary Caldwell scored at Hampden I couldn't actually hear anything other than pure noise. I can only imagine what it was like when Hampden held 100,000+.

The Parc des Prince was special too. I was in the 'away' end, which was predominantly Scots anyway with the crowd throughout split 50/50 and when we scored the place went crazy. Fantastic.

I was also in the famous Wall in Dortmunds stadium when Scotland played Germany a few years ago. Incredible atmosphere with the Germans singing throughout and me and my mate, alone in the German end, singing the Scotland songs with those at the opposite end of the ground. At the end we shook hands with those around us. Brilliant.

^^ I second that emotion

5 from me too, Chelsea.

Oh, nostalgia's not what it used to be . . . (I have to pretend that I'm not that old) (keep my secret, babe)

Something that stands out for me in terms of atmosphere is the play-off final of 2005. 40,000 Wednesday fans in Cardiff's Millennium Stadium - I thought that would be hard to beat for us Owls' fans.

Kitty, we have had a few games against you that have had some great atmosphere's. Two that spring to mind were the second division game when we were both going for the title in 84 and Mickey Thomas made his debut and the other one is when you beat us 2-0 at the Bridge in a League Cup semi final about 91.

I remember thinking at the time I can't imagine us ever winning anything. I think you and me have talked about this before.

hello summer since ,that game you mentioned at the bridge in the f a cup ranks as 1 of the best days I've ever had at football.london derby and the atmosphere was electric.

we had the whole north stand and as you say your ground was open in them days, you went 1-0 up and I still stand by what I've said to you before the shed at half time looked amazing and its a shame that you just don't get the atmosphere in grounds like that anymore.

I was at the f a cup semi final replay at highbury v wolves in 81-82 and was in in the clock end which wolves had the other half.we won the game and took over highbury which added to the buzz.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FiymyZy3c_E,just look at our lot in the north bank when the goals are scored and the reaction of them bouncing up and down,i understand why all seater stadiums were brought in and along with cctv has made it safer for fans inside grounds but you just don't get that reaction anymore

keep talking about that game at the bridge as much as you like as I never get bored talking about it

Although another match that had special significance, was the last match of the 2011-12 season, 5th May 2012, when Wednesday won promotion to the Championship.

All four sides of Hillsborough were given over to Owls fans - something that has never happened before - Wycombe only brought a few fans and very sportingly agreed to take the seats in the North West Corner.

That was a very special atmosphere and I can't imagine it happening again.

We have, Chelsea. I remember the 84 season. We played Cardiff away last match, when you pipped us to the title - I was there, and remember waiting at the final whistle to find out how you had gone on - I've never forgiven you

I also remember the 1991 game and thinking, "Chelsea are rubbish - they'll never win anything" . . .

Hounslow's how ya doing fella?

I have heard from some of my Spurs mates that the Semi Final at Highbury against Wolves was an electric atmosphere, I would imagine because you boys felt a sense of injustice after the first game at Hillsborough. It was Kenny Hibbet wasn't it who was the villain of the piece?

yes mate he took a dive and clive Thomas gave the spot kick but glad he did in a way as the replay at highbury was blinding.

I went to a game at the bridge when u lot played sheff wed in div 2,think it was 4-3 or 4-4 brilliant game and atmosphere was electric.think paul canoville scored.

I'm all good thanks and good post from yourself

I had great seat for that game, just a few seats long from the Arsenal bench, but had a Manc behind me and some cant near me who kept screaming abuse at our players, I had to stop myself from knocking him out. Completely ruined the atmosphere for most of the match.

I'm a bit embarrassed to say, but I think the best atmosphere I've ever experienced was a Genesis concert with 100,000+ spectators I wasn't a fan but went with some mates who were and it was absolutely fantastic.

Spurs v Bolton, must have been late 70's, top of old 2nd division, I think Spurs won one- nil, but sticks out in my mind as one of my best away trips.
It was also FA cup semi final day, but I recall Spurs v Bolton attracting over 50,000 that day.

I was at that game, was indeed a tremendous atmosphere, but then Spurs always used to take over the old Highbury anyway.

Romance in Durango.

I was at that game as well, was 1-0 Don McCalistar goal, over 50,000 at WHL, which was more than at an FA Cup Semi being played up the road at Highbury at the same time, which only attracted something like 47,000.

69er

Best atmosphere at the Bridge, aside from lifting the premiership trophies (was at all 3 matches)

I'm torn between beating Pool at home in the cup (i think what made it more special was it was rumoured the scousers were making bets on how many they'd get in the 2nd half)

Beating Barca 3-1 in 2000.

Away? In the league for me it can only be the Reebok in 05 for me. Perhaps it was the importance/significance of the match, but wow..............

I also loved being at Wembley in 97. It felt like me and 5 Chelsea Fans (all from Leicester) started the Vialli chant that filtered around all our fans about 5 mins before Ruud brought him on.

But i'll be honest, the most electric atmosphere i've ever known was indeed an Auld Firm derby. It was at Celtic park and i think Neil McCann scored a hat trick for Rangers that day. I do not support either team but was fortunate enough to get one of the tickets going spare from the Eyemouth Celtic Supporters' club

We heard rumours that a Celtic fan did a Tom Daley from pretty high up in the ground, but i've no idea if that's true.

Arsenal Spurs when We scored and then Fabregas scored again straight from their kickoff. Never seen anything like it, everyone lost their heads

Last season their were some cracking atmospheres at Emirates, louder than I could remember Arsenal ever being. Bayern Munich before Szceny got sent off, and against spurs in the cup "Tim Sherwood's a gooner"

Hello 69, late in on this one mate as I'm in Thailand for three weeks. As you know I managed to get into that 75 game at WHL but the whole occasion was a bit of an anti climax for me as we as we got relegated. The Millwall game as you rightly said was the most toxic game I ever went to. The scenes that day were far too horrific to describe on here, plus the fact we lost 3 nil. The best atmosphere I remember experiencing though was the 76 FA Cup quarter final v Palace at The Bridge. Crammed in The Shed in a 56,000 crowd was amazing. The place was buzzing with the crowd surges, knees up mother brown and the rest of it. Alas I doubt I will ever experience such an occasion again with all seater stadium. I feel sorry for the younger generation of fan that will never experience that. Sorry about the lack of paragraphs mate but I'm on my phone.

The night we won the Champions league in Munich.

I took my son.

It was absolutely incredible.

The Bayern supporters were convinced that they would finish the night with the cup.

After the match watching the players on the pitch was fantastic , in particular Drogba , something changed that night for me, I've been pretty chilled out about Roman and CFC ever since!

Greatteams,

I think everyone at the club had experienced so many C/L disappointments , that win seemed to make up for all of the near misses in the previous 9 seasons.

Since then Chelsea have gone in a better direction, things have fallen into place, Romans choices have been proven correct .

Happy days !

ifarka, Munich was without doubt the greatest weekend of my life, and like you the experience is never to be forgotten, but even that didn't seem as intense as that day we played Spurs at the Bridge.

The reason for it may possibly be that at the time we played them we were desperate for any sign of us actually getting near to winning something after years of mediocrity after the Osgood years, whereas Munich (was cathartic after the near misses of the previous years) but we were used to and had gorged on winning things, like leagues, cups, doubles etc. I always think that any set of fans are far more "Up for it" when they are starving hungry for success than when they are regularly getting it.

I know that an FA Cup Quarter Final does not anywhere near compare in real terms to a Champions League Final, but in that era it sure as hell felt like it because we desperately needed some sort of validation (as a supposedly big Club in hibernation) and beating First Division Spurs after beating First Division Liverpool in the previous round would have felt like the World Cup to us at the time.

Expectation levels change with success and the perceived intensity is all relative I guess. Our current capacity is almost the same as the crowd that day against Spurs, but despite that and despite the fact that it is now enclosed on all four sides we still can't seem to generate the noise and atmosphere that both sides made that day in an almost open air arena. The scenes at half time in the Shed and the Spurs boys in the second half were as others have described earlier in the thread quite simply unbelievable, the like of which I have personally never witnessed before or since that day.
