Benatia did cost about €26m so he wasn't exactly cheap

How about Varane? He isn't a guaranteed starter for Madrid although I'm sure he is happy to play 30 games a season and win titles at a club like Madrid.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

If you cannot get ahead of Pepe and Ramos, something's wrong with you
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Seniority, experience... he will just wait. Pepe and Ramos are playing in an easy league in a team that just scored more than others. Varane IS a better CB
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'd agree on what I've seen of the lad, I really do not rate Ramos.

That's £20m for one of the top 5 CBs at the moment. Cheap as chips when you compare it to what was paid for the likes of Smalling, Jones, Rojo, Mangala, Chambers, or David Luiz

Isn't Gundogan fatter than Taraabt and Wazza put together these days?

"Meanwhile us, Arsenal, Liverpool, Barca, and City signed worse CBs for just as much money, yet never even went in for him"

We did, we just chose Mangala instead as that is who Pellegrini wanted.

Don't know post

If he's back playing (something I wasn't aware of) then I presume he must have shed most of it

There is only 1 thing missing in our team with the back 5 inc DDG. An organiser/leader.

Watching the individual players there is talent and skill etc that exceeds some of those mentioned. Problem is they play like individuals

To be extreme for a second, as good as say ddg is at the moment as a keeper i would be happier to sell him for a big sum to RM and buy someone like begovic who commands his area and is happy to shout at his defence etc

Same with our defenders. Would even suggest doing a laurent blanc loan type think temporarily just to get some cohesion

In fact all over our pitch we have an abundance of talent but no leader or organiser

We have leaders up front. RVP and Rooney captain their national sides.

It's in defence we need a top CB leader who has a good injury record

Jones could become that player but he isn't there just yet

Yeah the defence needs a wise head that can organise

Without wishing to trade insults again because you see it as anti rooney neither him or rvp are leaders. My favourite player is giggsy and as captain and now AM i dont see it tbh.

If had a Bruce or rio type players in the team you could play without a captain imo. Without these kind of players the captains role becomes different and vital

For me the likes of say becks and gerrard as captains was less about them than others in the team if that makes sense?

Rooney will be fine as Captain

Let's give him some time eh?

He's certainly a leader in my eyes. Clearly LVGs too considering he appointed him ahead of his national captain from the WC

I'm sure he'll grow into the role

I watched him for Udinese so I certainly wouldn't have said he was crap, he was excellent for them, only idiots would judge a player without properly seeing him
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Rave, you know some of the people we have on here.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yeah I know, but the way you keep going on about Benatia not being good enough for a Ligue 2 side 5 years ago (you've said it quite often) leaves me to believe you don't think he's a very good player, or not as good as he's made out to be, yet you make no comment on his actual abilities or lack of as it were, just seems like a daft thing to keep repeati without actually adding anything to it
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I actually think he is a very good player, the case I am making is that he had some tough moments growing up but faith was shown and he's blossomed. Perhaps the same approach can be shown to what he have at the club already
