ireland had the greatest footballer the world will ever see in george best, better than pele , messi , better than everybody,
had he been playing today on todays bowling green smooth surfaces he would have been even more unstoppable than he was 40 yrs ago but unfortunately george had a brussel sprout for a brain and decided to combine his talent with vodka -

that for me is it for irish sportsman i am afraid IG -
-------------- nobody else leaps to the mind as being remotely talented as best in any other sport for ireland --

you never saw george best so you dont have a clue about the scale of his talent -

where as people like me that did see him can actually make a comparison with players of his era and more modern day players --

Best better than Pele, debatable, but Pele proved himself on the World stage, Best never did.
MA, at risk of starting you off again, can I ask how old you are? Also why do you assume no one else but you has seen Best, Pele, Senna etc. Do you know everyones ages to be able make those statements?

He forgets thers videos. He is an idiot

From what ive seen pele was better, stronger, better in the air, quicker. Best was a wonderful talent, but cannot dslescribed as a great in my eyes because of his character defects. Character n personality are all part of a footballers make up. Take Ronaldinho, absolute wonderful player, heads gone now n hes playing int ar, ze end o nowhere

Pele was a better player than Best as was Maradona. Messi and Ronaldo are also better than Best. He was a phenomenal player though.

I will admit however that one of the best shágs I've ever had in my life was from an Irish girl. Still remember it with fondness.

i saw alot of george best on the tele as a young boy in fact he was my big hero when i was very young , i also saw a certain amount of pele and in my opinion from what i saw best had more natural talent in the way he could go past people with ease , pele from my recollection never really had that same kind of ability as best did -
agreed pele will always be thought of as arguably the greatest ever but i have always believed that best was the most skillful player we have seen to date and that includes messi , zidane , maradona or whoever , but will admit that best"s reputation will always be severly tarnished for his off field activities -

and yes i am able to roughly deduce the ages of the people i talk to on these forums , younger members in there late teens early twenties tend to stand out like quasimodo in a room full of arnold schwarzenegger "s for the naivety of there comments at times -

But he NEVER proved himself on the World Stage, never having played in either WC or EC finals. He only really shone in one team. He played 1st team for MU for 11years and in the subsequent 10 years was a journeyman and played for 18 different teams! Hardly a player every top team wanted, or 2nd or 3rd division for that matter..... (a bit like FA maybe).

you cant blame best for that as n ireland were always a poor side when he was playing for man u ,

can only go by what i saw of best and everybody that came after him and with the possible exception of maradona in 1986 who was probably on drugs anyway have never seen anybody with so much natural ability at going past people -

he will never go down as the best player ever because he was such a pra/tt in his private life but for sheer skill with the ball he was one of a kind --

No problen with ur opinion martial, its the ridiculous notion of age being a pre requisite to wisdom and also u say uve seen him on tv, so uve seen him on the same platform as most other people, and in fact inwould argue that u were subject to the media hype surrounding the player so potentially have a bias to ur own era. This transcends in to ur f1 opinions. U come across as a, it was all better in the good ole days, which i personally cant stand that view of life, its narrow minded, yes, something where better, but a hell of lot nore was worse. Last century we had 2 world wars killing countless millions, we now have relative peace, last century, a lot of footballers where drug taking, alcohol drinking, nowadays they are mostly supreme athletes at the peak of human condition. History proves that generally, things get better and progress is made.

So simply put, spare the patronising age rubbish, the generation im brought up in has the technology to look at ur generation and make educated opinions

Part of the deity of Best was BECAUSE he played for MU. I know I am biased and would tend to favour a player who played for the team I support, but if you ever watched top flight football either live or on TV in the late 60s early 70s, there was another player who could pass other players with the ball as much ease as Best. Also of Gaelic descent but Scottish not Irish.

take it you are talking about jimmy johnstone , from what i gather he was scotlands best ever player ,
probally the same kind of a player as best but with a poorer scoring average ( i think )

talking about two such great players probably puts into true perspective all the ridiculous rubbish the younger generation spout about messi , ronaldo , etc being the best ever --
