Vertonghen's Reaction

Agree with that Yido. Do not know what Bruce and the pundits were going on about.

Ramirez legs wrapped around Verts leg as you describe and he had no option but to trip. Slightly firmer and it looked to me he could have had a broken leg.

Petulance, my arze.

Yep I agree. Vert made no fuss at all, he wasn't hurt, and didn't pretend to be, he got tripped up and fell over. That's what happens.

I see Steve Bruce has described it as "rolling around as if he's been polaxed".

So exactly who is overreacting here?

I cant see why the pundits are debating it. It was a send off offence and thats that I will agree Verts did give him a bit of a nudge with his knee beforehand tho.

Bruce would be far better off worrying about the discipline of his own team because after that decision they lost discipline all over the pitch which was a big reason we managed to get 3 points

Vertonghen got called out for it last year by Mourinho when Torres scratched him. So it is easy to have another pop at him.

Whereas they overlook Barkley diving yesterday, Henderson diving a few weeks back.

What is Vertonghen meant to do. If he gets up and nothing gets given, then the pundits will say Spurs were unlucky as the game could have been different had Ramirez been sent off.

I actually think it was a slightly harsh red card; although by the letter of the law it was probably correct, I think yellow would have sufficed, particularly as Ramires was fouled in the build up.

But Livermore escaped a nailed on red card so it's not like they were hard done by.

Agreed, looked to me he was bundled over.. Livermore not seeing red should be the story!

Yeah couldn't understand the backlash on MOTD2. It looked like he had his feet tangled up.

If you want to be consistent then it probably should be a red card, if say pushing your head against another player's is, or hands to another player's face is. I mean none of that is violent play IMO but refs don't hesitate to give red cards for them.

I was thinking that too when they were having a go at him on Sky. Don't see what else he could have done, he didn't roll around crying like he did when Torres bítch slapped him last season.

As an Ex Referee, I always sent players off for off the ball incidents like this.
Even if no contact is made it is the INTENT that is key, Ramires lashed out and was punished quite correctly.

However the referee bottled it when Livermore made that late challenge & he too should have been off for a second

OP

You beat me to the article. WTF was Bruce on about, Verts was kicked, and went down, as any player would. He did not go rolling around, as Bruce is telling all and sundry. It was maybe a harsh red, but no way Verts was responsible. Maybe Bruce should try telling his own players to stop being so petulant. No mention from Bruce either why Livermore never saw red either. Coverage of the incident was disgustingly biased in Hull's favour.

Over action but Ramirez kicked out, he can't have any complaints.

I just watched that game on MOTD as I was flicking though and was waiting for the big mistake which changed the game. It never came.

Maybe "who ate all the pies" Bruce will now send his dossier to the FA about their injustices this season. They should remind him to include Vertonghen "rolling around" and oh..not to forget Livermore's tackle against Mason.

Vertonghen could have probably stayed up if he'd stumbled, but Ramirez did have his leg wrapped around him.

Idiocy from Ramirez, but far from the worst theatrics from Vertonghen. Beckham got sent off for less, so it's not like they don't know the rules

It was pretty pathetic if you ask me, and Vert's knew exactly what he was doing, we were losing, we needed s spark to get back into the game, Ramirez stupidly gave it to us.

Vert's 100% could have stayed on his feet, I've been kicked like that at football, I felt embarrassed,

Thudd!!

So you are saying 100 per cent that players that get the slightest touch in the box should also not go to ground. I don`t see too much embarrassment with them, when they gleefully accept and score a penalty.

posted on 24/11/14

I just don't see it, I didn't see Vertonghen go to ground as the result of a kick, I saw his feet get tangled and tripped?

You saw it exactly as I, and a lot of others saw it. It probably was not a red, but no way did Verts theatrically go to ground. He was kicked, end of.
