Team for tonight

Liverpool have chosen not to train and use facilities provided in Bulgaria, instead going through a session on Merseyside before they left for the airport. It's more common for teams to train at the stadium of their opponents but when Liverpool travelled to face Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu, their session was watched by journalists and Spanish newspaper Marca were able to get their predicted team absolutely spot on, even though there were many changes to the normal Liverpool line up.

Why do people, when given a choice of dropping either Skrtel or Lovren, always choose Skrtel?

I'm not one to slate a player, and to be honest Skrtel hasn’t been great this season, but out of all our new signings, I'm most disappointed with Lovren. I saw yesterday that he's been responsible for the most errors leading to goals in the entire league. That's crazy for a £20m player brought in to tighten up the defence. I wouldn’t have him anywhere near the team at the minute. The fact that he continues to get selected allows him to think that it’s OK to continue to put in sub-par performances. The same can be said of others too.

Skrtel is hesitant and indecisive, there was a ball he should have gone for on sunday and dithered about it before just getting there.

I honestly think that his partners are trying to cover for this which is some of the reason behind players ending up going for the same ball etc. Lovren and Sahko when he plays doesn't trust Martin to make the right choice quickly enough.

Toure more than deserves a run in the team

Stats can easily lead to finger pointing. I have watched all our games twice over this season. I have watched our defending very closely. Skrtel marks no one and is always out of position. Lovren is dragged out of position all the time as he is filling in the massive gaps in defence left by Skrtel.

I have been saying for 3 years that Skrtel is a major liability. Lovren is new and played well last season. he has come into a team with no confidence and an atrocious defence. No wonder he looks worried every time a team attack us.

Skrtel has had chance after chance. Why not give Lovren a chance with Toure?

Jordan Williams has traveled with the team and maybe on the bench this evening.

Really like the look of this big guy. He is calm, composed and strong.

Lovren has quietly improved as far as im concerned recently. Not to the standard we require yet but there is less diving in a stupid basic mistakes.

Gerrard will play in a more advanced role and Lucas wil lplay as the deepest midfielder.

He has changed his ways this season. He just prefers to mark space than strikers.

Lovren and Skrtel have both been awful, and IMO it's a bit of a crapshoot in terms of which one we need to drop (I say one because Sakho isn't fit - when he is, surely himself and Toure need to be given a run).

I'd probably drop Skrtel. Lovren's made a lot of high profile errors, but Skrtel is just as bad IMO, his defensive style just means that his errors aren't as glaringly obvious. Whereas Lovren might go to win a ball and completely miss it and get roundly criticised, Skrtel routinely distorts the shape of the defence and allows attacks to develop with his reactive positioning and his panicking.

I don't think our back line will ever be fixed with Skrtel in it, because he is completely at sea when asked to do anythying other than sit in front of the goal. If there is any amount of space around him he is visibly uncomfortable when defending, and reluctant to push out.

I think Toure could have a calming effect on Lovren, and a partnership with Lovren defending aggressively at LCB with Toure covering at RCB sounds a lot more balanced than asking Toure to go and win the ball while Skrtel covers him and shoving one of them to LCB.

Either way, Skrtel and Lovren both need to be dropped long term, as they seem to make the same mistakes over and over again, week after week, without reproach.

Oh, and the rumours of Gerrard and Lucas sharing a midfield again are worrying.

Moving Gerrard forward seems like a tacit admission by Rodgers that it hasn't been working with him as a deep-lying playmaker. Unless this is a stop-gap and Rodgers is planning on dropping Gerrard for the weekend and on a more regular basis, this just seems to be a baffling continuation of Rodgers' insistence that Gerrard plays at all costs, regardless of form or his effect on the team.

Completely agree Paulie.

Skrtel even makes Sakho look nervous. He has done the same with Agger, Carra, Coates and now Lovren. we never learn

Can't wait for Sakho to come back. We need a leader and I am sure he could be the one to take advantage of this situation. He is the French national team captain so must have those leadership skills.

Yeah, Sakho's been saying recently that his English is improving and he's hoping to start being a more vocal leader soon. I really like the look of him too, and wouldn't be averse to seeing Sakho/Kolo given a run with him now and seeing Ilori challenge for a place next season.

Skrtel has had one decent season with us, when Kenny was in full charge and we were fairly rigid, which suits him. Other than that, he is a complete bag of nerves when asked to make decisions about defending space and that's not going to change at his age. He should be sold ASAP and I don't think Lovren has a big future with us either. Obviously it's early days, but he's been fairly atrocious.

Has Ilori been getting any game time? I hear updates about the other loan players but he is never mentioned.

He has played 4 games this season and scored 1 goal. He does have potential but he is young and dropping him into a nervous defence could ruin him. I would let him stay on loan till next sewason. He is a really promising player

I'm not buying that T Bone. He has come in to a team that finished second and into a defence that has cost the price of a small country. No excuses!

We are not the same team as last season. Completely different. We have no attackers. Our attackers were our defenders last season. This season we have 2 statues up front. We have a broken captain in midfiled who looks like he is on a different planet.

There are no excuses i agree with that but you can't say that they are not nervous and playing atrociously
