Even if there was some truth in the Messi..

It would all depend on the figures.

Would much rather have Robben/Ronaldo because they are PL proven. Messi has been quality recently but for 2 seasons now he has been off the boil. I feel he as already peaked. He's won everything to offer at club level and that could be why he looks disinterested.
I'm not saying I wouldn't want Messi at Chelsea, I would ofcourse, However his fee would be at the very least £150m and let's be honest do we need him?

posted on 28/11/14

And another thing where would he play? Our system works perfectly for us, The only position I could say we are lacking consistently is on the right hand side but would Messi be effective on the wing?

If, after the work we have done in the last few years around FFP we went out and bought him, I would really despair at the club and the people running it

Guys

Let's take pure logic out of the equation

Are you really saying you wouldn't want messi, possibly the greatest player we will see in our generation? Sorry I don't understand that

Also lets not forget his commercial apeal
1 Adidas would love him to sign for chelsea and would probably contribute to his fee in some way or another
2. The merchanidsing sales would go through the roof
3 a wider audience of messi fanboys will start flocking to us like moths to a flame.

Flash, you old salt, let the kid in you dream son, play a bit of fantasy football

Also to start making financial assumptions about the club is silly

Nothing would be a bigger waste of money than Torres...except possibly the £35m on Carroll the same day...

Unsure why we're comparing Torres to Messi anyway

Mon i think even from a football point of view, it would be a massive disaster.

Even if Adidas contributed, we'd still shell out more than 50M to get him. For a player i don't feel would be a success in the Premiership. It would be a disaster imo.

He's past it.

Just scored another hattrick in the CL

My comparison was around my belief that if we played Barca in this season's Champions League and he had 2 MOM performances against us, our fans would be near popping semis at the thought of us getting him.
Torres even in his last season at Pool had good performances against Chelsea. I didn't want him and i wouldn't want Messi at Chelsea.

That and as i believe it would take more than the 50m we shelled out for Torres to get him, i actually think it would be a bigger disaster than Torres himself.

What are you basing assumptions on that he would not be a success in the PL?

I don't believe he'd adjust to the pace. I think a well organised defence would nullify his attacking qualities.

I understand that Messi has a £250m buyout clause in his contract, and is paid £16m a year.

Unsure how long his new contract was for (was signed before the WC) but say it was three years, Chelsea would need to pay in the region of £300m to sign him.

Thats Ok we can put him on a 30 year contract and amortise the cost to £10m a year.

Obviously we stop paying him after 5 year though.

Many diminutive players from slower leagues have come and adapted to the pace of the PL, and the supposed well organised defences. Although I don't believe there are that many of them, and we are moving further away from teams emphasising the defence in this league. This is not just any player though, this is the top 2 player of the last two seasons and the greatest player most probably to have ever played the game.

In regard to Messi’s ability to succeed in the PL, it is blatantly obvious that he has the capacity to flourish anywhere.

Even on a cold, wet evening in Stoke…

It would be very tempting if it was ever possible. The financial strain of the deal wouldn't be an issue marketing wise - the transfer of Messi to the Premier League will generate huge revenue streams for whoever picked him up. 100mil, 150mil, 200mil, etc... doesn't matter, shirt sales alone would chop the price in half and that's before all his sponsorship stuff.

He'd be an outstanding coup for Man City. Us??? Not as sure as players like Ronaldo, Bale or Robben on the pitch, but in a universe where he specifically wanted to join Chelsea we'd have to consider it very seriously. If Mourinho could find a way to get the team shaped around him as a no.10 and was happy to do so it's a no brainer. If not?????

I dont see the same desire and hunger in Messi anymore. Ronaldo stil has it. Not so sure Messi has. Yes he scored a hat trick the other day but Ronaldo has been at his current level which is above Messi for atleast 2 years now, non stop. Messi just seems bored of football. Cant blame him if he is.

The chances of a small Argentine scoring a hatful of goals in the PL, particularly in a season like this, are slim to none. Much more likely to succeed if you are tall and most importantly English and have done it in the lower leagues in England, which are of higher standard than the CL and el ligo.

posted on 28/11/14

Of course you'd take him as long as the club can afford him. Not only would we have one of the best players of all time but it'll also attract other big players to play for us.

Thinking like that is how we wound up with Torres. It's never that simple.
