Costa is not Drogba

I wish Jose can make him understand that we expect a lot from our strikers, not just to score in the league but also to have an impact in really huge games.

Still prefer Drogba to him atm if i'm being honest

Me too

Ridiculous article.

What do you consider the really big games we have played that he has failed in then OP?

posted on 20/12/14

Costa's done well but should be better next year when hopefully he's fully fit and has a long summer break, clearly still not 100% no matter what Jose says, all things considered 12 goals in 13 games is great but in terms of actually running a game and creating space etc Drogba's still the best striker for the job and i'd prefer him in big games to Costa

Has Costa played in any huge games for us?

If Drogba was a couple of years younger, I think he would be our first team striker.

Costa is a different type of striker to Drogba, despite early comparisons because they're both 6"2 and strong, Drogba uses his strength a lot better and in essence is more complete, Costa is a poacher in a bull's body, good opportunist finisher and finds space well in the box. Costa still a very good, probably world class striker in his own right, but think his limitations will stop him getting to Drogba level

Cup final scorer
Cup semi hat trick
Madrid derby scorer
CL semi final scorer

But not a big game player

He has to show more passion and desire like drogba and lamps. These are players who know what a goal means to us

12 goals in 13 games and you make an article like this. All league games are big. Need I remind you that last season we dropped 5 points at home to Sunderland and Norwich. Had we a decent goalscorer like Costa we'd be champions

Strange article.

Has Costa underperformed in any big games for us ?

No.

Have we even played any really big games this season ?

Arguably not.

It's like criticising Costa for some future crime that he may never make and probably won't.

All the evidence shows that Costa is a big game player. He's a huge reason why Atletico Madrid are current Spanish Champions.

Also if Costa hadn't had to limp off in the Champions League Final then I suspect that Atletico may well also be current Europe Champions.

Costa and Drogba are incomparable strikers (different attributes). Both offer us something different. Drogba had a lot more to his game at his best and I don't see Costa reaching those levels.

But I like what I've seen from Costa. Think he'll be a great player for us and has already shown glimpses of what we've been missing up front for a couple of years.

There's a very good reason we were the only club willing to met that 32mil release clause. Unless that ball's in his feet in the box he offers little to no threat to the opposition. His tenaciousness is the only thing that gives him an edge because on raw technical ability he's punching above his weight massively being at a club like Chelsea, very much like Drogba without his god given strength.

With the article completely. While he hasn't competed in a ton of big game matches in his career, which is a clue in itself given his age, I wouldn't be shocked to see him phased out of the matches. He's a striker that needs that extra second and yard to score goals than the really top teams would allow in matches that really matter. A very good league striker, I have massive doubts over his calibre as a cup striker right now.

On the plus side for us I'm frequently wrong about this things, I've constantly underestimate the power of graft in football, and Costa if nothing else is certainly a grafter

They're a lot more comparable than you'd think. Their rises to that big club move (obviously us in both cases) are remarkably similar. Neither did a damn thing till their mid twenties, had one season where they really burst out onto the scene helping their respective clubs reach a European final in the process.

Ah. In that respect yeah they are different. Both in their primes would be a very interesting combination, pretty prolific actually.

More big games at his age than Drogba had so that comparison made you look a fool.

Still with this sh,t. Costa scored many important goals in very big matches inc Barca and RealM away and there isn't bigger than that. Check out this strike

Goals v Pool and Arsenal this season which were big games pre kick off do nothing to convince me he's not a big game player. People here getting on his back cos they don't watch him regularly and obviously didn't see his contribution last season.
I can remember Newcastle singing to Drogba you're just a one season wonder back in 2004. We all know how that turned out.

Very true Bov, he is a very brilliant striker. ,no doubt about that but I just feel that he lacks passion, maybe with time he will start loving the club and maybe become passionate like the others, for now IMO he is just doing a professional job which is OK but we want more, much more.

Cap, " but i feel he lacks passion ?? what a load of fckng tripe .

As you rightly pointed out Costa is not Drogba!

Two different players offering goals ,but not like for like in skill sets.

He is a predatory poacher, excellent tool to have in the box, but as I'm sure you are aware at CFC we normally carry three strikers enough to give the squad variety .

Cap, i applause your effort to try ask the same question in a different way, but as always you do suck.
