Mourinho won the UEFA and CL in succession. Had he not been taken by Chelsea who knows what more he could've achieved.

Manc Python.
Whilst I accept one offs happen and at a stretch a 2 legged wins can be counted as a one off to win the tournament with Porto who incidentally topped Real Madrid in the groups if I recall correctly is an incredible achievement.
I've had my say and I suspect he will only get the recognition from you guys once he retires.

Nobody can say what Mourinho did at Porto wasn't impressive. Mourinho is one of the best managers working, maybe the best. What Clough did at Forest though, was obviously a lot more impressive.

yep, im sure i read the celtic team were all born within a 10 mile radius of the stadium

Mourinho wouldnt be in my top 5, i dont even think he'd be in my top ten, and thats not a knock on him.

hes a top manager, but there are many who have been better.

Bov, I give him credit for winning the Champions League with Porto, but their run to the final was not that bad once they got into the knockout stage. The Man Utd side they beat in the last 16 was not their greatest. The draw was kind to them and clearly that was not his problem and in a cup, you need to avoid the top sides if you can.

Again pretty difficult to compare over different periods. But in this period it has been Mourinho and Fergie - everyone else below them.

Busby was incredible. I grew up on this stuff as my old man was staunch Man U. His achievement of begging and borrowing players and rebuilding from the bottom of the club upwards was outstanding.
I would not position them in order of great managers as you say its not always measured on trophy count.
Busby,Shankly,Paisley,Clough,Fergie are all greats.

you look at Mourinho and he has never really been challenged in the way that he has taken over a midtable team and led them to trophies.

Chelsea, porto, Inter and Real were all well established teams in their leagues, and all backed with money ( in comparison to the other teams in each league).

it would be interesting to see how he would get on taking over the likes of Malaga, Atalanta, West ham and some random middle of the range portugese team.

above Busby and Clough probably, yes
...

You'd seriously put Jose above Busby? Come on.

That won't happen, because of his earlier achievements in Portugal lead him to manage Porto, and his achievements at Porto led him to manage at Chelsea, his achievements at Chelsea led....and it goes on. It would make no sense him going backwards. He has done the short term achievements with clubs, and pretty successfully to, for the most part. His goal now would be to build a legacy at a club - which is what I assume he will do with Chelsea.

Maybe a generational thing ruiney. Bill Nicholson at Spurs was a great manager and look what Alf Ramsey did at Ipswich before England.

i know it wouldnt happen now, because he has won the right to manage top clubs.

just saying it would be interesting to see how he would have done.

Interesting that most of the greatest managers were British. Obviously there have been many brilliant foreign managers, but you can't argue that Britain hasn't made some incredible bosses.

It's really difficult to compare between different era's. I'm sure finishing top 4 year in year out wasn't seen as a big thing back in the days due to behavioural factors of the teams at those times - however Wenger doing it without spending much money relative to others is a great achievement in itself.

Not really Ruiney, when 99 % of managers in English league history have probably been british. its only the last 15-20 years that its been mostly foreign

posted on 24/12/14

It was difficult Kevin at one time to stay in the top 4 for a couple of years. City in 68 and Everton in 70 won titles and finished mid table the following year. Arsenal in 70 finished mid table and won the Double the following season.

....

But we're talking about the greatest ever managers, not just in English football.

Darion Gradi is another manager who deserves to be up their with the big boys. It's not all about PL titles, cups, Top 4 finishes, Champions League....he managed the same club for 24 years and by all accounts did a remarkable job

posted on 24/12/14

There may have been brilliant managers in foreign leagues too with amazing achievements - we just didn't know about them, wasn't as much of a globalised world as it is now. Past Real Madrid, Ajax, Bayern, Inter, Benfica managers?? Wouldn't expect many from this country to be as knowledgeable about the achievements of those managers during the periods where they dominated when compared to the British greats during the mid 70s to mid 80s.

I had someone say to me the other day that he only goes where the money is... ridiculous comment to make!

---

It's not that ridiculous a comment to make, really. Since his first stint at Chelsea, he's hardly been strapped for cash.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

And Pep hasn't been either. At least Jose showed at 2 clubs that he could achieve success with zero money. First at Uniao de Leira and then Porto.
Pep has had vast resources in all his jobs.

Jose hands down.

Real Madrid had like 4 or 5 managers during their 5 Euro cups in a row.

Ah, get your point, even then its not the whole case, capello, lippi, ancelotti, del bosque etc etc, spain and italy have probably just as many

Given the amount of CL money that's involved now and teams investing heavily, even going into big debts, to achieve CL status - I would expect there to be a much sterner challenge to finish top 4 than back then - purely for behavioural reasons. Probably has a negative effect on the league overall.

they did have a few. José Villalonga won 2 la Liga's and 2 European Cups in 2.5-3 seasons. Not bad.

Munoz though had an amazing list of achievements at Real Madrid.
