How can Rooney be considered in Man utd all time XI?
Dennis Law and Charlton were more presitigous.

By the same token you could say why is Ruud Van Nistelrooy there?
Rooney is approaching 150 goals for United, a milestone many have failed to achieve. An integral part of the United set up with numerous club hours, his omission would equally have fans up in arms
Cantona and Law
(Charlton goes in midfield, regardless of the rules of this question; Rooney could take Cantona's place in time.)
By the way, does anyone think that Andy Cole might have made the shortlist? An under-rated player.

Not a bad shout and despite only making 100 or so appearances, I LOVED it when Joe Jordan was banging in the goals for us
Beast of a forward. That smile was awesome when he stuck the keeper in the back of the net along with the ball

As I stated it is a contentious issue with regards Sir Bobby.
On the point of Cole? Not really, he is not greatest material IMO. With the service he was getting he only scored 120 odd goals for Utd. Whenever I think of Cole, nice chap that he is, I think of the umpteenth miss in front of goal! Although to be fair to him, he and Yorke struck up a devastating partnership during the Treble winning season, possibly his finest season.
He definitely would be on my long list but given the competition I am not surprised he failed to make it to the official short list.
UnitedRedMacca
I'm afraid that's just before my time. My football memories (mainly traumatic ones) begin in the early 80s. Frank Stapleton and later Mark Hughes were the strikers I admired, while thinking about the decade also brings flashbacks of the names Peter Davenport and Terry Gibson. Meanwhile my mind has blanked out all memories of Garry Birtles.
I doubt the list was on the basis on goals scored, goal to game ratio, goals per game , etc otherwise Cantona would not be on the list.
Cantona was more than goals, he was influential, he was the catalyst that began United's trophy laden dominance. He was also a figurehead that led a bunch of youngsters to come of age.
Andy Cole on the other hand was just about goals, an effective one at times but not as prolific as his early days for Newcastle United.
I wonder with time, with records broken, trophies won whether Cantona's name will disappear from our thoughts?

Mark Lawrenson was asked a couple of years back what it was like playing against Joe
He just cringed and said ''absolutely horrible''
Said it all

I'd put it this way: he'd be on the edge of my short list. Cole's goal:game average stands up well against all but the very best strikers in the club's history, and his movement off the ball was superb, helping create a dynamism in our front line that made spaces for the likes of Cantona, Giggs, etc. to exploit.
Comparing him to Ruud, for instance, he wasn't as prolific or as good a finisher but he was also a bit more than a 'predator', his movement bringing something additional to the team. He was maybe more comparable to Saha. And I'd suggest he'd fit into our current team, partnering Rooney, better than Ruud or Hughes.

Could not fault his movement, his timing or being in the right position - it is his technique which was laughable at times. More often than not he would shin a goal in ! He also needed 6 or 7 chances to score one. However, rewind a few seasons back he was lethal, working in tandem with Beardsley for Newcastle, his strikes truer, he rarely missed.
