We need both a CB and a CDM desperately. A CB shades it. Anything less than two players is disastrous.
Improvement is never a luxury.
Luxury??? We have a seriously imbalanced squad. Really need a DM
And how is improving on existing players a luxury? We aren't exactly leading the league table by 10 points at present
We don't play with a traditional DM, but rather, two pivotal holding mids. In Ramsey, Arteta, Flamini and now Coquelin, we have enough for now. Perhaps in the summer, we might offload one or two to get another.
We need a CB. Without one we will NOT get top 4.
We need a DM. Without one we might still scrape 4th.
We also need fewer error prone players. And better defensive tactics. And fewer injury prone players... but these things take more than one transfer window.
Yes ox...that'll sort all your issues out....do you want mikel...im not saying he's a centre back...but do you want him
Does Mikel have a first name? Or any other name that uniquely identifies him?
John Obi Wan Kenobi Mikel, they don't come much more unique than that
No thank you! I will rather have Flamini. Yes, he's that bad.
CB is the most inportant for me.
but thats not to say that DCM is not a priority, coz it is.
just get 2 players in for these positions and have done with it.

he made 'mikel' up, it's like my nickname, 'big-boy', it means nothing, except to a few people.
as for the OP, you forgot a DM or at least a player better than flamini and arteta.
PS. The way we play means we concede too many goals, so yes we need a DM, and please don't argue with me (I hate that).
The OP is talking in numbers not quality.
In that sense he is correct, we have numerous options for DM.
However, in terms of quality it is a position that needs to be improved, and that would not be a luxury.
What we need is a version of Arteta that is younger.
The composure, interceptions, and the ability to distribute the ball to necessary positions to start off attacks. Non of Flamini, Coq or Chambers are up to that.
Ironically Denilson was hounded out by his own fans for having this exact skillset.
Adrian Rabiot springs to mind. Young player who won't mind rotating with Arteta for a the next 18 odd months.
Ironically Denilson was hounded out by his own fans for having this exact skillset.
--------------------------
Denilson couldn't pass the ball forward nor could he do it quickly. Thats why he has been poor since.
And we don't need another Arteta. Why would we need someone who could not dominate midfield nor provide defensive cover for our fullbacks that are required to provide width in a Wenger system?
We need a Vieira. Someone who can attack and defend equally well. But if Wenger wanted someone to sit more the player we need is Gilberto (before his back injury). Not Arteta.
we'll never get another vieira...he broke the mould!
I reckon we won't sign anyone. we are half way through the season, out of the league with only the CL to play for.
wenger will not waste time/money signing a defender, he will wing it and go again in the summer
What we REALLY need

A new manager.

Quite possible. But what infuriates me is the notion that somehow it will be easier signing these players in the summer. We had the same issues last summer and Wenger could not fix it because he never really identified the problems properly.
Wenger persuaded himself that the reason why we lost the league was because we lost Theo to injury. He completely ignored the heavy away loses and why we couldn't dominate games.
We needed a faster CB than Mertesacker, a stronger/faster cover midfield player than Arteta, a more clinical striker than Giroud and a more confident keeper than Chesney. How many of those problems did he really fix?
How about getting Evans from Utd?
maybe we should sign lampard from NY?

----------------------------------------------------------------------
We've had the highest average possession in the league 3 years run. We are at an attacking state 60+% of the time. Whoever is going to make that statistic count is going to need to show more prowess at the attacking responsibilites (yes, DMs do have them, else sandro would be world class ) than defensive.
Passing range and consistency.
Tactical knowledge (Notice how we never seem to get 2nd wave attacks without Arteta in the side?).
Vision.
Tempo control (Freeing advanced playmakers the freedom to receive the ball higher.)
Fans seem stuck on the vieira model of DM from a bygone 4-4-2 era.
Very few quality side on the planet have bruiser DMs ( before anyone states matic, he's the lesser of 2 defensive evils, with mikel obi being far less invested offensively).
Sitting, short-passing covering DMs like you've described instantly create added responsibilities for at least one other player on the team. Against Southampton notice that one of Kos or Mert was responsible for the build up, as neither Coq or Chambers had the passing accuracy to take on that responsibility. With Flamini in the side it isn't as bad, but either Cazorla or Ramsey has to compensate for his limited passing range.
Vieira back in the side would probably not replace Arteta in our first 11. He would replace ramsey. Same way Alex Song spend most of his "Songinho" year playing ahead of Arteta.
The "Bruiser" plays in front of the deep-lying playmaker in our formation, as seen early last season when Ramsey had far and away the best tackling statistics in the league (something that has gone amiss this season as he goes walkabout trawling for a slot in the highlights). Defensively I feel we will be much more stable if Rambo deferred the scoring responsibilities to Alexis, Theo and Giroud...and focused on being the Box-2-Box Beast that he was last year before his goals return became such a huge factor in his decision making.
We don't need any signings.
We have many LANS
