You liked American Sniper?
Thought it was so average and far too patriotic and simplistic. From what I read of the guy he wasn't that well presented in the movie either. I also read originally is was going to be directed by Spielberg and more about the battle between the 2 snipers and how both are fighting for their people, sounded more interesting than American guy kills loads of bad middle eastern guys.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Seth Rogen got it spot on when he likened it the propaganda film in the 3rd act of IngloriousBasterds.
It was well shot and well acted but that doesn't make it a great film.
I would have preferred your idea actually with Clint Eastwood concentrating on the psychology of both snipers and why they are killing people.
He used this formula with Flags of our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima, so why not this?

But I think he was able to do that by splitting it into 2 separate movies. Eastwood is a good director but he is very simple in his approach and that works for lots of movies, I just don't think it worked for American Sniper.
It definitely left me feeling uneasy with Eastwood who is so openly pro guns making such a film. My friend watched it in a cinema in America recently and said people were actually celebrating when he shot the other sniper and no one stood up to leave while the ceremony was being played over the credits, weird.
I watched 1 episode of True Detective and wrote it off, foolishly. 3 months later, gave it another shot and was hooked by the end of the 2nd.
I just assumed it was going to be a waste of time, like the way I felt about Breaking Bad. I did give that 2 seasons and dropped it, found it incredibly tedious.
Totally agree about the weak line up. Birdman for me was exceptional and the winner by far, but then, I suspect The Theory of Everything will win, it's such an 'award season' film.
Rage of Reaper
By all accounts Boyhood is odds on to win, ain't got nothing on Dazed & Confused.

It's definitely a scary reaction.
Especially because they didn't include how the Sniper died in real life, I wonder how the audience would have reacted to that.
A fellow soldier suffering from PTSD shot and killed him. They also didn't include how the sniper felt about Iraqi's referring to them as savages in his book.
The simplistic take on the events surrounding this soldiers life make me uneasy because the psychology of why people want to kill other people regardless of who they are is far more complex than patriotism.
It also does a disservice to those suffering from PTSD by not including how he died.
I've worked with a couple of British soldiers on some TV work who suffer from PTSD, to ignore this issue completely was stupid in y opinion.

Waking Life was also immense.
Yeah, I did feel they kind of ignored how he died when it had a lot of relevance to his own pain.
Like I said, the story was played out far too simplistic and patriotic.
As for the OP.
American Sniper, quite good but Seth Rogen has a point.
Boyhood, excellent.
Imitation Game, even better.
Theory of Everything - haven't seen it.
Grand Budapest - very very good.
Birdman - haven't seen it.
Selma - haven't seen it.
Whiplash - very good but a bit cheesy.
Yeah I found american sniper a bit to pro american. I think it'd be better serverd showing it from both sides more. The people fighting against the Americans are just as patriotic as the Americans, and are in the whole fighting for the same reasons, to protect their country and their family. I know obviously there are some evil people out there as well. But it would be interesting to see it from both sides, like how another poster mentioned, to have it from the Syrian snipers perspective. In their mind they're just being as heroic and patriotic as the Americans sniper is.
Having said that, it was still a great film and very emotional in places, and cooper was very good. I just think the film had more potential.
Only other films I've seen in that list is whiplash and grand Budapest. Both excelent films with great acting. Grand Budapest is amazingly shot and crafted in all senses. It's a nice story as well, not the oat dramtic, but that's not the point. It's quite funny as well.
Whiplash was the best for me. Didn't expect much going into it, but it was amazing. JK Simmons was outstanding! Good story and told very well cinematically.
Going to try see Birdman this week.
It was a bit stupid to have the enemy sniper in it. Kind of took me out of the movie with its forced inclusion.
I think though because originally he was supposed to be far more prominent and just as important as Cooper's role they probably felt he was still needed, just not as much and far more 1 dimensional.
Going to see the Kingsmen this weekend. Excited as it's gotten great reviews. Potentially as enjoyable as Kick Ass.

A good article on Chris Kyle.
As for the Kingsmen, I'm also planning to watch that, I'm a great fan of Matthew Vaughn.
Imitation game is my favourite from last year, brilliant story, brilliant film.

American Sniper is a bit on the boring and pompous side as a film. Birdman looks fantastic and Michael Keaton is great in it and Edward Norton even better. But in the end it's too clever for its own good. Grand Hotel Budapest is mad but fab and Raph Feins would get my vote for best actor. Haven't seen the rest.
Oh also got to say what an interesting thread this is. Well informed and intelligent comments generally (Robb excepted of course). Which is amazing cause reading your comments about football I had most of you marked down as complete morons.

Kind of how I felt, I can only assume many of these people choose a different persona depending on the subject. All a bit weird.
