, but equally the fact that with the modest competition around this season a top 4 place is still somewhere between a hope and an expectation - and a long way short of a guarantee - shows what a poor job he has done so far.
....................................................
He's only behind City and Chelsea, who everyone expected to be ahead of us...
He has us 3rd and with an excellent chance at the FA cup, results wise I'd be surprised if every United fan wouldn't have taken this if offered at the start of the season...
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If he gets 3rd at the end of the season it is job done. But you have to admit that of the clubs chasing 4th United are playing the worst football, and have picked up the fewest points over the last 6-8 games (against relatively modest oppostion too).
And as for blowing LVG for his cup run, let's just remember that he has beaten Yeovil and Cambdrige (after a replay), and that's it.
Thing is, LVG would of had to sign another 6 players, whilst selling another 6 to get some balance in the squad.
We need:
1x RB
1x LB
2x CB
1x CM
2x Winger
1x Striker
We need to sell/ be rid of:
Falcao
RVP
Valencia
Evans
Young
Probably a couple more
People say we have the players for a 433, what about when Di Maria/ Januzaj get injured or aren't playing well? We have zero alternatives.
Our midfielders are all okay, but none are great. There is a lack of pace and a lack of movement.
Our first choice attackers lack pace, and almost all need to be carried through a game. Januzaj, Mata, RVP and Falcao offer little in terms of defending from the front, at times Di Maria too.
Our defence lacks a leader and reliable back up.
Sure if we go on to play terrible then you can criticise Van Gaal...
If we go onto win the title then you can praise Van Gaal...
But lets not play the hypothetical game, lets work with what we have...
He has us 3rd, slightly better than I expected to me. That's brilliant, if he doesn't keep it up then fair enough criticism deserved.
But I don't think we should be criticising him on the basis we might not finish 3rd (or top 4) when he currently has us 3rd
I may as well criticise Cristiano Ronaldo's scoring this season because he may not score again this season and then his scoring record will not look so impressive...
6 games isn't a big enough sample, check out the premier league table over the years after 6 games and compare it to the end, massive changes.
Lastly Liverpool, Tottenham, Arsenal and City all have european football returning shortly, the end of which coincided with the great form of Tottenham and Liverpool.
^
Exactly, the criticism of Moyes was justified because whilst we looked hopeless on the pitch we were also 7th in the table, and we were out of the CL running since December in realistic terms.
It's still a big if, but if LVG can get us to top 4 he will have achieved his goal. I for one at the start of the season would have bitten your hand off for that, top 4 was and is not a given.
At least this season, the players are fighting for their salt, last season the players had given up.
Thing is, our squad has a lot of balance.
DDG/Valdes. Two top GK's.
Right back? Rafael (who has been fit for weeks) and McNair.
Left back? Shaw and Rojo.
CB's? Admittedly our weakest area but Smalling and Rojo always look good together. Weirdly Smalling is left on the bench.
DM - Carrick and Blind. Fellaini can play there too.
Attacking mid - Mata, Herrera and Di Maria.
Wingers? Di Maria, Young, Adnan and Valencia.
Strikers? Rooney, RVP, Falcao and Wilson.
I'd wager a large amount of money that a less tinkery and more open minded manager could get a lot more balance from that squad than we're currently getting.
I'm not saying that bunch of players is good enough to win the CL or even the PL but it's certainly balanced enough to play well in games rather than the shitt Scholes is talking about in the OP.
You think spending £60m on a guy who has played his entire career as a winger/midfielder, then using him as a striker when you already have 4 strikers at the club, shows a plan?
=================
How many times has he done this? Southampton and an FA cup game which he changed later. You make it sound like he does it all the time which is nonsense.
"Which midfielders did he sign? Herrera? When did he last start a PL game?
======================
Daley Blind as well, Herrera not starting every game does not mean he does not have a plan for him. He has also explained his views with regards to Herrera and his expectations
How does promoting a youngster count as part of a plan?
==================
Generally teams promote youngsters who are good enough into the first team. It is a plan for the future. This is not a new phenomenon
If he wants pace upfront why did he not sign a pacy frontman?
===================
Movement upfront is better than pace. He played Di maria tactically. He has never really played with forwards with blistering pace.
If he doesn't trust Rafael why did he not buy a RB? If he think the CBs are vulnerable why not bid for Benatia before Bayern got him for £20m?
====================
If wishes were horses beggars would rise. Hindsight is always 2020. LvG will not be the first or last manager to change his mind about a player. The Benatia comment is a bit daft really, did he want to come? Where we ever interested? He did sign Rojo, a CB as well plus he has 3 at the club and youngsters as well.
LvG is not a splash the cash manager. He is a great believer in promoting from within. His solution to every problem is not buy, buy, buy.
The guy has been a manager in Europe for 20 years and appears to have made 2 signings of his own this summer - Blind and Rojo - and then decided not to add to the squad in January.
==========================
Di Maria was his signing as well. He signed Valdes in January, so he did add to the squad in January. The players he may want may not be available, January is rarely a good time for business.
If he fails to get top 4 this season it will be an almighty balls up.
================
Agreed, so far he is doing what is expected and is in the top 4, steadied the ship, the team does not give up when they concede and players have belief and some of the kids are growing from strength to strength.
He is even making Fellaini look like a football player. It is not time to run screaming for the hills yet, like you said, he has more experience at this level, so I will give him some time.
Lastly Liverpool, Tottenham, Arsenal and City all have european football returning shortly, the end of which coincided with the great form of Tottenham and Liverpool.
--------------------------------------
Yes, but how much European football?
Arsenal 4 matches max. Spurs, probably just the two matches as IMO Fiorentina will beat them. They're already out of the FA Cup so the extra game factor isn't really gonna do too much to them.
And who knows what Liverpool side Rodgers will field in Europe. Maybe just the reserves.
I don't like that he isn't playing Rafael, assuming it isn't because of a lack of fitness... always quite rated rafael and I think we have a good set of young fullbacks between him and Shaw...

People missing the point here. We may currently be in 3rd but we're playing the worst football of the rest of the top 4 challengers and have decided to put a massive millstone around our neck in deciding to play Rooney in CM on a more permanent basis.
Can people not see that it's self sabotaging from the manager to be making such a stupid decision when we're about to go into a period where every result will matter.
People on here are rightly worried than instead of the manager saying 'okay, we're in third, Rooney is going back up front and Herrera will start in CM and we'll start to play to our strengths' he's actually saying and doing the opposite.
He's putting a massive handicap on our chances of getting 4th and to add to that he's bringing 2015's version of the Lampard and Gerrard in the same team paradox to our squad by constantly playing RVP and Falcao up front.
Questions need to be asked why LVG is sabotaging our chances. Please don't point to 3rd in the table because in reality we've been dropping points while the others have been gaining points. 3rd looks a lot less stable than it did a few weeks back and with Rooney in CM and a misfiring strikeforce we're looking vulnerable.

One would think it would be easier to support a manager with the same vigour who is not failing.
Oh well, I guess it is the fickle nature of the football fan, refusing to even use their own advice.
One wonders how I can rely on their advice in the future if they do not use it themselves. Life is a horrible thing

Meanwhile Moyes deserved time for stupid decisions, poor results and performances, trying not to lose rather than win a game and taking the champions to 7th place after spending 70m.
You really cannot debate such impeccable logic

No, my criticisms are how we are playing as well as concerns that LVG is making stupid decisions with Rooney that IMO will cost us top 4.
You guys seem happy to just look at the league table and think all will be fine where I can see a situation unfolding where LVG's bizarre insistence on Rooney being our midfield saviour ends up costing us top 4 especially with our rivals all bang in form while we keep playing awful football away from home and sometimes even at home.
With the exception of LVG, I can't see anyone arguing with Paul has to say there.
Robb....

What I am criticising from you is your criticism of LVG saying he won't get us top 4. When we are currently sitting in 3rd. Whilst you were more than loyal to Moyes whilst he sat outside the top 4.
I may as well respond to your we won't finish top 4 with we will finish 2nd.
Both are hypotheticals, neither have happened. The only thing that has happened is we are sitting in 3rd and are on course for top 4.

Superb post, I still find it amazing that people are not giving the manager time and windows to get his squad right.
He needs time to fix the mess left behind by Fergie and Moyes. Moyes only had to fix Fergie's mess, LvG has to fix both their messes.
He needs time and windows to fix this.
Did I forget to mention he needs time?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I would also add that he needs time.

Top man!

LVG needs to show that he deserves time. By making stupid selection choices now he's showing that his time management skills are a bit dodgy.

Well actually the reality is we have dropped more points than first and second but picked up more points than everyone else in the league...
Thats the reality, everything else is opinion.

Exactly MUDD, Moyes got more leeway than this from some who criticise LVG and he was taking over the champions rather than a demoralised team that finished midtable.....
I can understand the criticism of the performances but results wise I am more than happy so far.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I am particularly amazed at Robb and Macca, 2 stalwart defenders of Moyes even when he was failing spectacularly.

At least Macca's criticism's are confined to how we are playing...
Robb was still loyal to Moyes having us out of the top 4 last season, but this season LVG deserves little to no loyalty on the basis that yes we are in the top 4 but he feels we are about to drop out....
Sorry Robb but it appears slightly crazy from an outside perspective...

This sentence in reply to Mudd's indicates that Macca's criticisms are confined to performances whereas yours are not. I am acknowledging that you have been criticising performances.
