I just don't get this obsession with finishing top four. Frankly you get more money from finishing bottom in the prem, then you have ever got from winning the CL. The CL is not quite the gravy train everybody thinks it is. The top clubs may well be in it thinking they are going to be making loads, but when you have players on your books taking wages of £250 grand a week, how the feck do they actually make any money out of the CL?
The CL is not quite the gravy train everybody thinks it is.
=======================
It is. Plus increase in sponsorship and match day revenues and that's before you get onto the footballing side of things like attracting players and entertaining the fans.
It is a very good competition to be in and there is no doubt about this.
I agree, though, that it's not the be all and end all.
Robin Hoody.
Bayern Munich I think got something like 52 million euros for winning the CL, that was inclusive of everything TV etc. winning the trophy. The bottom club in the prem received something like £40 million pounds. So finishing bottom of the prem is more lucrative than winning the CL. The wages alone of a CL winning club, would swallow up that 52 million euros.
As Hoody said, it's not just the prize money, it's the increases in other revenue streams that the int'l exposure generates for you.
That said, Sandy's point about wages is true to an extent, and it doesn't stop there: qualifying for and doing well in the CL also triggers a whole load of bonuses in players' contracts and the payout of add-on fees to the clubs they were signed from.
Not sure if it was in '06 or '09, but I do recall reading that all those bonuses and add-ons actually meant that Barcelona posted a loss for that season (even though they would have more than made up for it in the following seasons), and I wouldn't be at all surprised if that was the case for more clubs.
Sandy - its incremental though so you're gonna get the PL money anyway depending what position you are in. The CL revenue is incremental on top of that that other clubs in the same league are not going to get.
Re: pressure, interesting you have to distinguish between the club finances and club expectations. I think Man U's finances are stronger than other clubs and would survive not being in the CL better. However I don't think the manager would and there'll be a bigger impact on the playing squad..
However Liverpool have lower expectations on the manager and squad - but probably need the finances more to keep moving forward.
It's different in each league.
The CL next season will be more lucrative for a premier league side next season than any league in the world.
The CL is most certainly a gravy train for teams in it, especially the big ones, as it's not just about all the prize money - which is why Spurs have been so desperate to qualify for it.
The wages thing is a fair point, however, the same can be said of the premier league. Premier league wages have gone through the roof since the new tv deal. It's all relative.
I don't believe we got Poch in to get into the top 4. Obviously it would be nice but I think with his track record of giving younger players a chance is what gave Levy a semi. He just wants a manager that won't rock the boat asking for extortionate amounts of money whilst the stadium issue stretches our finances. I think he's realistic. I'd be gobsmacked if h demanded top 4, especially if he's not willing to put the money up to get there.
The CL money in addition to PL or whatever league your in prize money makes a massive difference, there's no getting away from that. Even if a team gets to the last 16 or quarter-finals on a regular basis, they're raking in around £20m extra in prize money and revenue than a team who misses out and ends up in the europa - money that can be used on signings, scouting....

such a stupid argument, seeing as teams also get money from the league. Winning the CL plus league finish money(say winning the league) is worth more than PL relegation.
Yeah but Sandy is pretty stupid, Nick.
darren, seems he just types without thinking. Trying to argue relegation is more beneficial then being in the CL.
Atletico Madrid must have made a tidy sum from last season's CL run. Money which would have been used as part of their near-£100m splurge in the summer, or to help pay their debts.
I am not saying nothing of the sort that relegation is better than wnning the CL. I am arguing that the money is not as great as a lot of tou think. The top teams in the CL are paying ridiculous wages, so most of the money if not all they get even if they win the CL is completely swallowed up by ridiculously high wages.

I think it is you that needs to get your brain in order with a comment like that. I would wager I know a bit more about the game than you do.
Anyway, 90 per cent of teams survive very well without CL football, so not the be all and end all of football.

CL money in addition to your league prize money is the same as having a job paying well enough to enable you to pay your mortgage, as well as receiving rental income from a buy-to-let property. You're able to get by without the extra income, but those extras allows you to be more extravagant with your spending.
Which is to fund maintenance and repairs on both properties.
So, where's the profit?
Man united, Liverpool and arsenal will battle it out for 3rd, 4th and 5th in my opinion.
