The Bale Money - Massive Opportunity Missed

Everybody was happy when the new signings come in. Always easy after the event.

You signed Eriksen as well.

The funniest thing is that lot cost you a fortune, yet players who cost nothing and you already had are in the team ahead of them.

Spurs are not the only club that have wasted £100 million on rubbish, all of the top clubs wasted at least that at amount at some time or another, Problem is most of them can just write the £100 million off, and spend another £100 million.
£100 million.

How has Chadli been a flop

Look at his goal and assist return and then think how little he cost

Chadli a 'massive flop'?

Not even just a flop, a massive one.

Some fans..

Chaldli has had a few moments, but not enough for me. I know he suffered a bereavement recently and allowances should be made for that. But overall he's been a flop. Do you think any of the big clubs would want to sign him from us?

Regarding my overall article. I guess this subject probably has been covered several previously so apologise for creating another one! It was prompted by numerous articles talking about our deadwood and questioning Poch's abilities.

The problem is you're looking at it with hindsight.

There was logic to all the signings.

Soldado, great goal record in spain, peak age

Paulinho, starred in the Brasil team that did well in the Confeds cup

Lamela, the next big argentine talent, had an exceptional year in Serie A (ok we paid too much)

Capoue, solid, bit of a risk but they pay off sometimes

Chadli, hasn't been a flop, decent player

Chiriches, captain of his national team, Euro experience.

No one could have predicted that all of them would have done so badly (chadli excluded).

Moreover, our scouting team has been replaced / revamped to address this. So it's been acknowledged and the best action taken... tho I'd still like to see Baldini explain (publically) what he does.

They were mostly a waste of money but I don't this is due to any specific person or problem.

Also, Paulinho Lamela Chadli and Capoue were all young enough to be the basis of our side for the next five years, so again they made sense. Lamela (just) and Chadli still have time to really prove themselves!

But never apologise for making an article, everyone has their opinion, that's what this site is for

The transfer window is a big gamble for all clubs whether they're signing unknown players or world class talent.

Look at Di Maria - he has arguably been one of Uniteds weaker additions yet people thought he would transform them.

The success of any player comes down to three things:

- the player: can he adapt his game
- the manager: can he motivate the player
- the system/formation

I can't speak for other fans, but the only two signings from that bunch of signings that excited me were Eriksen (who I had heard of and seen play) and Lamela (who was being touted as the next big thing). I had never heard of the others, with the exception of Paulinho, but even with him I had my doubts.

Last summer we signed another batch of players who many had never heard of!

I agree that the scouting team appears to have been revamped, so hopefully we'll make more sensible signings in future - looking at the character of the players as well as his technical abilities.

Just because a big club wouldn't come in for him it doesn't make him a flop, especially at £7m. We're a medium to large sized club, and as I say Chadli was only bought for £7m. So how is he a massive flop?

All that window highlighted is that we need to look more inside the prem. Or scout better

A success rate of 2 out of 7 is poor.

You need to be hitting at least 50%

Furthermore we didn't waste 100mill - unless you are saying that the value of those signings is now 0 ?

Chadli and certainly Eriksen will have increased in value.

Actually they will probably have both doubled

Chadli to 15 mill ish. And Eriksen to 22 mill ish

Chadli a massive flop

A world beater he's not but he's a good player for us and got him at a decent price

Dont remember anyone slagging of Levy / Baldini at the end of that transfer window. The only criticism was that there was none with any EPL experience, we knew we had over paid a bit on 2 or 3 of them but thats natural when everyone knows you have £100m in your pocket.

For me the only real criticism was that Soldado did not fit the AVB system and was starved of service and there was a lack of pace.

Other than that the buys made sense, fitting a 433 better than existing players and upgrading outgoing players like Parker.

Sadly many of the player have underperformed and to some degree its not a surprise. None had EPL experience so would take time to settle, that process not helped by a change of manager not once but twice in their first year. This season they all started again under a new regime so more adaption needed and there are players that clearly do not fit the Poch style and now have no place in this team.

Capoue repalced Parker, Chiriches replaced Caulker, Lamela and Chadli fitted the 433 formation better than the likes of Lennon. Paulinho was properly box to box with an eye for goal, Eriksen the creative spark.

To spend so much, make so many changes and then change the manager mean

I'm sorry mate, but no one's going to pay £15m for Chadli right now.

I'm a big fan of Eriksen, I think he's a classy player. But he's too inconsistent and again I think your current valuation is over the top.

Fans get caught up in the transfer window frenzy. When we sign someone - anyone - the fans are pleased! I recall seeing an article a week or so ago with someone getting excited at the prospect of signing someone call Rimmer or Wimmer, can't recall his name.

The club has a responsibility to sign players who are going to add value to our squad. If they fail to do that, then criticism of the club is totally justified.

This is actually very true.

Apart from when we signed Gregorz Rasiak.
